We are celebrating the 16th anniversary of the JWSOUND site which continues to be a vibrant and highly popular resource for our sound community. I have seldom asked for donations to support this site , over the years there have been so many spontaneous and generous unsolicited donations it has been a real help in running the site. At this time I am asking for donations if you are able to as the expense of running the site has increased (hasn't everything except our wages!) I have never strived to monetize this site as many other sites have and there has been over the years substantial support from the paid advertising banners running on the site. Many of the companies tha…

I am asking that those members that feel they can afford it to donate a small amount of money to help me with the costs of maintaining this Discussion Group site and CinemaSound. I have been able to manage on my own for the last 5 years to keep these sites up and running, upgrading the software that powers this forum, upgrading my server accounts, routine and some not so routine maintenance, but I could use some help now. I am asking for a donation of $10.00 (US) on a yearly basis to keep all this going. This is totally voluntary and no one should fear that either of these great sites will be taken down if no one donates. I am asking for $10.00 but any amount will be ap…

I stumbled across this video when surfing YouTube. It is truly one of the funniest things I've ever seen. I must have watched it 50 times now. Anyone with any on-set experience will surely see how the chances of this happening are one in a million! The camera operator should win an academy award for his instincts. As this fiasco unfolded, his panning and zooming are sooooo spot on!! Enjoy!! Jeff Porrello Retired Boom Operator Local 695 Soundman Destroys Shop.mp4

I would imagine that this would be mostly the Mississippi River valley north to the Gulf of Mexico. How far on each side of the river this event will extend I do not know at this time, but checking with local state Ag extension service would be one place to start. https://dnyuz.com/2024/01/19/the-world-hasnt-seen-cicadas-like-this-since-1803/ If there was a good plan for deterrence beyond the clapping of dolly wedges that would help a number of us out in these locations.

Seems there will be a respite until 2031 in Region 1 at least (Europe, Africa, Middle East and others). The 470 - 694 MHz retains broadcast as a primary user, keeps PMSE (program making and special events, wireless microphones and similar applications in regulatory-speak) as secondary, and while some countries might authorize some mobile activity it would be on a secondary basis if at all. One of the key points of the opinions supporting broadcast and PMSE was regulatory stability, and it seems the next review is scheduled for 2031. So, some peace of mind for now I guess. EBU seems to be happy. https://tech.ebu.ch/news/2023/12/ebu-…

A few hours ago, Radius Windshields sent out an email and put up a Facebook post saying...well take a look at the FB post (the email is longer, but covers the same core material: (more rambling by me below the screenshot) Simon didn't name the company, but a quick WHOIS search shows that radiuswindshields.it appears to be registered by Videndum (formerly known as Vitec), the company that bought Rycote a few years ago. IIRC, they bought Rycote from Simon (and partners, I presume). btw- I don't know Simon. It looks like at least some of those domains don't currently redirect to any other website; perhaps that's a change made …

Working on a set of tools: Tool to merge BWF files into one long poly or mono file. Tool to log mute moments Tool to extremely fast offload Zaxcom MARF cards (Copy only the 'new' data, instead of the full card.) the Merge tool does something like 'autosequence', but with patch. The mute tool is a simple util that works with the merge tool, it will mute specific moments of specific tracks in the timeline I could use some input on how to improve it. Background: Client is shooting real life soap (or alike) with a gazillion of Zaxcom transmitters that also record. They want to use the data from the transmitter rather than the wirel…

I posted this in General Discussion as well. Does anyone have experience with payment via Stripe? An old client hired me for a one-day shoot (completed last week), said they would pay me directly, and now want me to sign up with Stripe. Half way through the sign up they want my DOB, SSN, bank info, and then there's a contract or contract-like document talking of fees and charges. I've emailed Isaac at Crew Mama, asking about such charges. So far, no response.

I'm not sure if Gordon spends any time on JWSOUND but I wanted to re-post his formal announcement here for our members. Congratulations Gordon! "Well, it's official now! September 8th will be my last day at Lectrosonics. I started this adventure in late October 1988 - I was employee #32. And it really has been an adventure. Thanks to all of the friends I have made in the industry along the way, I got to become part of a world that literally created new worlds in motion pictures, corporate AV, television production, installed sound and education. Lectrosonic's, all our customers, and dealers helped me see the world. And though all those tra…

The story is that I carried my nagra iv-stc, microphones and cables, walked for a mile, and then used it to record a chamber piece with me (viola) and pianist and soprano (it took place in the atrium of the school and you could hear people walking around). The machine is so heavy, and the cargo bag, is not ergonomic at all. It resulted that when I arrived the place, I was really tired, and I had a very hard time to finish the performance. Luckily enough, the machine works well. And a short sound example, only got gain on volume: 001.wav

In May 2023, K-Tek and the LA Sound Mixers are bringing Ken Strain and his BoomRight Masterclass to Berlin and Rome. An RSVP links and full event details will be posted very soon. In the meantime, this is the intro of the original Boom Operators Masterclass taught by Ken Strain here in Los Angeles in 2017. Ken’s presentation would eventually evolve to become the BoomRight Masterclass and, with the help of Brenda Klemme and Tino Liberatore of K-Tek, it would play in New York, Munich, London, Chicago, Atlanta and many other cities around the world. We are looking forward to bringing this seminar along with a panel discussion on production sound to Berlin and Rome in May 202…

Anyone see this new reality/competition show on Netflix? 1st episode they have 100 contestants in a room, everyone is miked up. I was wondering how they could coordinate so many frequencies and which wireless they were using. I also wondered how they were mixing, routing, and tracking everything and which lavs (the necklace mics) they were using. Then in the first competition, it's 50 people at a time, hanging from a grid. Then they each fall into a pool. The mic gets wet but again I was wondering which transmitters they were using and how they were protecting them. Anyone have any info about the sound team and how they did what they did? They also have dozens…
