Surprisingly, I saw this piece on the Spanish newspaper “El País” (which is maybe the Spanish equivalent of The NY Times or The Guardian). https://elpais.com/cultura/2019/05/18/actualidad/1558186557_831686.html I haven’t heard of this movie, and I would have supported the Kickstarter campaign had I know. http://www.makingwavesmovie.com/trailer-and-other-links-2 Anyway, sounds really interesting. Hope to be able to watch it soon! Filmin, the Spanish platform specializing on non-blockbusters should carry it, they already have The Conversation and Apocalypse Now, it would even be possible to build a playlist about cinem…

Today's NYT has an article about the neuro damage suffered by US diplomats in Cuba and their families, and subsequently reported by some Canadian diplomats. Their reporter -- who doesn't seem to know much about acoustics or hearing -- is basically selling a story of mass hysteria. Evidence includes a history of isolated cases of individuals with psychosomatic ailments, quoting researchers who say "well, we didn't see changes in brain structure", and psychiatrists who say "the brain has powerful effects on the body, and brains can be triggered by non-physical events". And of course it quotes Cuban officials who say "it wasn't us". Conclusion: the damage couldn…

This was a concert at Vanderbilt University in 1987 that was part of a Cinemax Special. Guests included Mark Knopfler, Emmy Lou Harris, The Everly Brothers, Willie and Waylon, Micheal McDonald and a band of Nashville's best musicians. I tried to get in but I was not Music City royalty, so no seat for me. Enjoy.

(They love to eat the recently-burned trees.) In many cases, they can sense infrared radiation from the fire even if it's at a level below local thermal noise! They're doing to heat what our brains do when we spot visual or acoustic patterns below random noise...

https://nyti.ms/2VjVWjA Researchers have sent a very tiny simulated atom back in time a fraction of a second, using a small public quantum computer. In other words, while you can't know both its velocity and the location at the same time, they've managed to compute how a wave function "got here" and reverse both to where it started. While complexity increases geometrically, a much larger future computer could conceivably scale this up. Yes, it was only a few qubits, on a tiny slice of IBM's smallest quantum computer. But consider how far binary computers have come in the past fifty years... [Please forgive the whimsical topic line. This is …

Hi All, Mixing a feature right now that has Post reporting an inconsistent 1 to 6 frame sync issue between picture and sound files. Does anyone here know the exact menu settings that need to be addressed regarding timecode on this latest firmware update? I have never had sync issues before this, and the last project was on a Venice, the only difference being 24 frames. Current one is using 23.98nd All my gear is acting as I would expect it to. Totally perplexed. Am I Alone? -Pouth (sounds like booth)

A friend of mine is part of The Museum of Broadcast Technology, a large building in Rhode Island with two floors of audio and video equipment. He'll be at NAB with at least a couple of large pedestal cameras and who knows what else. It's in the main lobby of North Hall, right at the Taxi pickup area. Worth looking at. And if you do please say hi to Paul Beck, one of my best buds from college (he went into video; I stayed with audio). You might also see Tom Sprague or Peter Fasciano; they're also good people and Boston-based engineers. When I first walked into the museum, before it was open and the equipment was just sitting there, I told a friend "…

Not a lot of action going here on JW over the past couple of days. Did something happen and I missed it? It appears as though threads are being displayed as when they were posted, and no update is shows that indicates a reply. Maybe it’s just me.

Stanley Kubrick allowed his then-17-year-old daughter, Vivian, to make a documentary about the production of The Shining. Created originally for the BBC television show Arena, this documentary offers rare insight into the shooting process of a Kubrick film.

Trying to figure something out: I have 23.976 material with LTC recorded as sound, and a BWF from a MixPre 6 that has outputted the LTC. (Also set to 23.976, although the LTC 'seems' 24, but I take it that has to do with a bad clock of the cam.) Now, there is an offset of 28 frames between the LTC and BWF. (And by a sick joke of the TC gods the video is named '00028.mov'.) On duckducking, I've found myself and remembered I had this before, and it could be due to setting 'preroll' in the recorder. (Meaning, start recording X seconds before hitting the record button.) But that was a 'very' long time ago. Is this still a bug / featurette? (In case o…

Ross Lowell the creator of Gaffers Tape passed away last week at age 92. I suspect almost everyone has use gaffers tape to secure cables on location at some point in their work.Plus of course his contribution to light weight lighting products.

Malcolm was a frequent participant here on JWSOUND having joined in May, 2006. I only heard of his death recently on Facebook and I have no details. I hope that one of our other UK sound mixers could give us some details on his passing. Malcolm was a good guy, he will be missed.
