Keoni Lucas passed away in an apparent automobile accident last night. Keoni was a freelance shooter based out of LA. He was a great shooter and an even better person. Senseless and tragic. He will be missed.

Not to sure if this has been posted here yet, but, the invasion of the broadcast band may not be as far off as we think. Take a look at this link and see what you think. Google thinks they can make this happen as soon as the end of 2009. I would hope that the broadcasters and wireless mfg's have a little weight to throw around. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080324/tc_nm/google_fcc_dc;_ylt=AnlmrZfsahOOy1VnU9BtwdCs0NUE

I was just reading in Prosound News, and maybe this is old news, that SADiE is closing it's doors. The article in Prosound goes into great detail about why the SADiE platform/product is no longer viable, and one of the things it talks about is the hardware base of their system. It was mentioned that it is very tough to compete in the DAW marketplace with proprietary hardware and to compete with software only solutions that rely on the ever increasing native power of computer CPU's. Not trying to out-tech Scott: Over at RAMPS, Jon Tatooles writes: Jon Tatooles We just received a 48 GB CF card for testing. Amazing capacity! While it is still more expensive than a 2.5-inch hard drive of any capacity, It is great to have solid state medium at this capacity that is approachable. It is a type II card, so the device needs to support the thicker cards. Also, while it mounts to Vista, Mac OS X, and all 7-Series, it can't be formatted as FAT32 from Vista (it wants format it as NTFS). Also, it crashes (hard!) my Canon 30D camera. I've never seen error 99... 16 GB cards work fine in that camera, so there must be something else going on. J…

An article in the Washington Post on the opening of the movie "Chicago 10" really turns out to be a wonderful review and celebration of my father's 1969 movie, "Medium Cool." You can read the article here: http://haskellwexler.com/HaskellWexler.Com/medium_cool.html - Jeff Wexler

Bob Elswit was a classmate of mine way back when we were in film school. Then as now, he was outstanding in his field. Only his field or frame looked so much better than any one else's film. I work w Bob every couple of years or so and he is a class act. His work is obviously worthy. Congrats. Not all nominating years are this strong. CrewC

Due to the government sell-off of the RF spectrum above 692 MHz, effective January 1, 2008, Lectrosonics will no longer build wireless in blocks 27-28 for stock. These blocks will become special order items only and will be phased out completely sometime before the February, 2009 transition. Location Sound will special order block 27-28 product for our customers until the 2009 change over with the clear understanding that it very well may be illegal to use these blocks after February, 2009. This was pulled from the Lectrosonics posting on the LSC website regarding the freq. situation. Now, We have all posted about the new freq. rules that will go into effect conc…

Don't accept promises. ====================================== Local 700, the Editors Guild, reported to all their members this week on what to do if you are owed money by Axium: Axium International, an Entertainment Industry payroll service provider has ceased operations and filed for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 7 of the federal bankruptcy code. I just had the internet crash as I hit send on the long post that I just tried to send... drat!! I have just returned from the IBS (see www.ibs.org.uk) training weekend in Moreton In Marsh here in the UK. A very fine weekend was had by nearly 100 delegates and organisers. Lectures were given and taken, experiments done, stories swopped, friends made, old friends met, drinks were drunk (rather a lot of them) and a pretty much good time was had by all. I was both surprised and delighted to find that Roger Patel of Everything Audio, who is/are the UK dealers for Zaxcom, arrived with a prototype (mostly working) of the new Fusion recorder by Zaxcom. For Fusion think …

I have an associate who just got a new iPhone. Several times I have not received emails he said he sent from his new device. How does the iPhone deal with mail servers? Is it different sending an email with wifi versus AT&Ts cell service? I don't have wifi on my Alltel BlackBerry 8830, but when I send an email it uses the outgoing mail server for the account I send it on and shows up in my "sent" mail folder (at least on my yahoo email account.) I know one of my old ISPs blocked using their smtp server if you weren't connected to their network, but of course that was on dial-up... David

It's time to think about the NAB convention and the (RAMPS) sound mixers party on Tuesday night April 15th at Fireflys. Looking to get a semi-official head count for the party. Add your name even if you only think you might make it. Thanks, Eric

I was told about this yesterday, by a focus puller pal: http://www.filmmakermagazine.com/blog/2008/01/breaking-news-axium-payroll-shuts-down.php http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/news/e3i4bf3c36aaec8fa4c848ce0556af88fbc They were handling payroll for a spot I did just before Christmas, and I asked my pal if he had gotten his check yet. Guess it will be a while longer. Jim PS There is info on the IATSE International website about procedures to follow if you don't get tax information from Axium/Avalon, if you are left holding a check from them, etc.: http://www.iatse-intl.org/home.html

Shure has been the major spearhead of Lobbying efforts (they have a lot to be concerned with as probably the favorite RF's of Churches and performers), so this article is somewhat positive news: http://www.shure.com/ProAudio/PressRoom/PressReleaseArchive/2007PressReleases/us_pro_pr_2007_ws_support also, we need to remember, the DTV transition in 13 months is going to affect all the standard (high power) TV stations, who will be shutting off their analog transmission, but the numerous little LPTV signals will still be allowed in Analog. finally, the Government has begun to issue the $40 converter box coupons, and the boxes will be available in a few weeks!

Just caught this on the web: http://www.amptp.com/ It's not quite what it seems. The "real" AMPTP is at amptp.org. This is a hilarious parody of the ongoing Writers vs. Studios situation. Granted, with many of us facing no money coming in, it's hard to laugh -- and trust me, we're just as nervous and frightened in post as those of you in production -- but some of the bon mots on this website made me laugh out loud. --Marc W.

Just read it in the Gotham Gazette: Lectrosonics Update Lectrosonics Reblocked Wireless frequencies are about to undergo some necessary shuffling, due to the FCC auction of the spectrum above 700 mHz, which will take effect February 2009. Lectrosonics is no exception, making Block 27, 28, and 29 no longer available except by special order in 2008 and entirely unavailable thereafter. To compensate, Lectro will be expanding the blocks available on the lower end of the spectrum. Blocks 19 and 20, pending FCC approval, will roll out first quarter 2008, with a possibility of further expansion later. In addition, more products will be added using block 944.

Somehow, StanTheMan's post regarding BoomRecorder went out as an email to other members of this group (and possibly even to people who are not part of this group) and this email looked as if it was a personal question from Jeff Wexler regarding BoomRecorder. This is not the case and I am sorry if any of you have received this email and took the time to respond to it. I do not know how this happened. The Forum is not structured to allow Members to do any kind of a mass emailing from the site but it looks as if that is what happened. I hope it all dies down on its own since I don't really know how it happened or how I could prevent it from happening. Regards, Jeff…
