Looks like the studio realize finally they don't really want a strike. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21336448/ LOS ANGELES - Seeking to remove a big stumbling block in stalled contract talks with Hollywood screenwriters, studio executives on Tuesday dropped a proposal to overhaul residual payments — a key, decades-old source of writers’ income. The move came as the two sides returned to the bargaining table with two weeks to go before the current contract expires and rhetoric about the chances of a crippling strike against the television and film industry was running high. The two camps have been sharply divided over the formula, first established in the…

I responded to a post "Don Coufals boom class on line, and was just wondering? I posted about a audio class, a in person on hands and a internet class as well. here's the confusing part (or maybe not) I recieved Personal Messages here and actual calls at work, from the entire spectrum of sound mixers. half of them want a class of some kind to attend and the other 1/2 wanting to teach the classes. why not respond to the actual post? is it embarrasing? do people wait and "see" what kind of demand there might be?? As my friend Tom Curley knows, Current TV has a studio in the heart of Hollywood, and continues to be a non-union network. Shame on Al Gore.

Apple has sold 1 million iPhones as of today, ahead of Steve Jobs' prediction of the end of September. One of the largest bidders in the upcoming sell off of the 700 mhz spectrum looks like it will be Google. CNBC in a story today said that Google and Apple are talking about extending and expanding their already very close ties. Do you think the rumoured "G-phone" may actually turn out to be an iPhone and could possibly Apple and Google have their own network (and we could all say goodbye to AT&T --- in 2 years, of course). Both Google and Apple have powerful brand and TONS OF CASH. All food for thought (either way we will still have to find a solution to our vanishin…

There was an error in the credit listings for "Rush Hour 3" in that, my name was mistakenly placed with Jeff Wexler's under Production Sound Mixer for the main unit. With help from Bob Maxfield and a thumbs-up from Jeff, I wound up mixing three days on a "Stunt/Additional Photog. Unit"; Very exciting indeed, yet, it does not give any green light to say 'I did the sound for the movie'. That credit belongs to Jeff, Don Coufal, Robert Maxfield, and the support staff that assisted them in the U.S. and Europe. To be credited this way overshadows the fine work that this team consistently performs, and it's just not fair to Jeff. In our profession we all know it's nice to ha…

I am curious if this link to my website works. Anyone interested, click on the link and let me know if it takes you directly to a slideshow (Quicktime movie) that we showed at Don's class last year. This is images only, no content from class, sorry. http://jwsound.net/Site/dcboomshow.html Thanks, Jeff Wexler

I am pleased with the new look of the Discussion Group and I hope there is agreement on this. Please do contact me, either personal message from this site, or public post for us all to read, or private email to me directly (private email of course if you are having problems even getting on the site). Anyone who encounters login problems should try and solve them locally since it usually relates to a bad cookie, the browser performing an "auto-fill" that doesn't work properly, or in the case of Macs sometimes a Keychain issue. For those with Macs who do not know how to deal with Keychain issues, the Keychain Access Utility can be found in the Applications Folder> Utilit…

I am trying to get my webhost to update the Simple Machines Forum software that runs this whole thing. I don't know when they will get to it. If the forum seems to be down, please DO NOT change anything on your end. I will do my best to have it up and running again smoothly as fast as I can. Regards, Jeff Wexler Note: we just had a little outage about 10 minutes ago but now everything is back to normal.

I've only just heard about this - the Sennheiser (omni) capsule covers 10Hz - 50kHz ... sounds interesting, excuse the pun! <http://www.gearwire.com/media/sennheiser-mkh-8000-aes-vienna.mov> I've seen scant other detail, anyone else?

You heard it first on jwsound.net... DeWitt Stearns is just about to open their doors to a new and groovy way of doing business with us sound guys/gals, actually all production folks, but this is a sound community so... Now don't go and cancel your existing policy. Be kind and wait until your current coverage expires. Beginning 1 August 2007: I don't have time to post all the details, but this may be the best news you've ever heard regarding production equipment insurance. Short: Reduced premiums. Can't whine about that. No more serial numbers required for items with unit cost under $5K. This allows for much buy and sell, trade, ebay, L&D replacement, e…

I just read in the L.A. times the obituary for Laszlo Kovacs. This is very sad. I worked with Laszlo a few times but never had the chance to do a full movie. Laszlo first came to prominence shooting "Easy Rider" which was just another biker movie, or so he thought, for Laszlo early in his career. He had shot more than 70 feature films, including "New York, New York," "The Last Waltz," "Frances," "Ghostbusters," "Multiplicity," "My Best Friend's Wedding" and "Miss Congeniality." Note: the L.A. Times screwed up and put a picture of Sven Nyquist (another great cinematographer who died in September 2006. The Times used the same picture in Sven's obituary). Regards, Jef…

I am recommending Lunarpages web hosting service for anyone who wants to put up any sort of web presence whether it is a personal website, a blog, a forum discussion group like this, ftp or email service. I have been with Lunarpages for about 3 years now and the service and support has been terrific. There has been almost no downtime at all and the few times that I have needed some technical support, I have always reached a pleasant and helpful English speaking support person. I have recommended Lunarpages to lots of other people and have personally helped many of them to sign up for their web hosting. The union Local 695 website is now on Lunarpages after struggling for …

Depending on how they want to use it this could be a good thing...or atleast better than AT&T getting it. http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/2007/07/23/google-fear-hits-at-t-square-in-the-jaw

hello everyone, Just shipped 4 lectro's w/sanken lavs, some schoeps components and comtek's to compliment the local mixers sound package to yukon Oklahoma. apparently that state is now "pushing " real hard for the film & tv market. fyi, OK. state has a 27% tax break for filming in the state. it seems all the states but Cali is doing this. when will cali get this going?? I know "we" tried doing pushing this fact with runaway production to Canada, but can we do anything like petitions. anythoughts on this? where is Arrnold?

Hello everyone. I thought it might be a cool networking thing, if all the mixers, boom ops, and post sups etc. if we listed the upcoming tv shows and the networks or the studio.(episodic, 3 camera sitcoms, features films, indie features, reality shows, and documentary projects. and who there crew is. Jeff got me thinking when he "put his name in the hat" re: he has nothing concrete until nov.(craigslist is not the only site to help fellow mixers??if it helpa at all.) that if we posted what all of us were doing this year. the better for all of the other mixers to day play or give a idea if they might have a chance at second unit etc. just a thought if it does lead to a co…

I have put up a website for information regarding MonaVie. For those who don't already know, MonaVie is a health drink, a juice made from the Acai berry and 18 other fruits, which Don Coufal introduced me to. It is great tasting and provides undisputed health benefits, rich in antioxidents, phytonutrients and all the good things, things which seem to be cropping up in current health and nutritional news items every day. MonaVie also offers the chance to build a business with the product. MonaVie is not sold in stores but is sold through a very well thought out and well run multi-level marketing system with MonaVie, Inc. Beyond just the obvious benefit of MonaVie for every…

Interesting new product from MOTU called the V3HD. It's a f/w audio AND video interface. It's not really for our application for the most part, but the interesting spec is that in audio only mode it becomes a 32 channel interface. http://www.v3hd.com/
