This August will bring the long-awaited release of the biggest film I've keyed to date. "D-War" is hitting 1500 screens domestically, and will also have a worldwide release as well. It's the highest budget film ever released by a Korean production company, and it's an effects bonanza where giant serpents tear LA apart. It's spent a long time in post, and had trouble getting distributed, so it's coming out more than 2 and a half years after it was shot. I was hoping its release would've boosted my marketability a couple years ago, but if nobody's seen it, then what good is it, right? Check it out at www.d-war.com Anyhow, my question to the folks who've seen many of t…

Having the classified section board "Want to Buy - Want to Sell" viewable by un-registered guests opens up the possibility of spam/scam responses from unknown people. Restricting viewing to only registered members limits the exposure a classified add will have. What would you like me to do? Regards, Jeff Wexler

It has come to my attention that one of our members has had some very suspicious reponses to a posting he has made offering some gear for sale. At the present time, anyone coming to the Discussion Group, even unregistered guests, are allowed to READ any post but are not allowed to post to the Group without registering. I need to know whether people would like me to restrict just the board "Want to Buy - Want to Sell" so that ONLY registered members can view these posts (and of course respond using the Group methods). If was a little smarter I might be able to put up a POLL here for members to respond. I will see what I can do. Regards, Jeff Wexler

I have now started to have a problem, once in awhile, where the "Show unread posts since last visit" button does not function properly. This is a problem that has been reported by a few other members. My basic routine, as I am sure many others, is to go the site with the URL < http://www.jwsound.net/SMF/ > then sign in and click on "Show unread posts..." link. This usually works but sometimes shows nothing (even though in looking at the Board list there are check marks indicating there are new posts). I believe this problem relates to the forum software and browser cookie function. One thing I have discovered is that even the initial URL to get to the site MUST read…

Peter Kurland has informed me that Glen is doing well but got really messed up --- it was a serious accident. We should all hope for a speedy recovery for a tuly fine person. Regards, Jeff Wexler

I have added a Gallery feature for our Group which should make it easier and a little bit more organized for those wishing to post images. The Gallery can be accessed using the main menu selection GALLERY. The main menu is the menu that reads: HOME HELP SEARCH ADMIN... etc. I haven't discovered all the things that can be done with this feature but it looks as if you may be able to start your own image gallery that is available to all of us. In its most basic function the Gallery is like a specialized Board for images where you post a "topic" that is essentially an image with description. It is the feature of more extensive description and comment that may make the …

I have had massive problems after an "upgrade" to software that runs our Discussion Group. I will sort it all out hopefully very quickly. In the meantime, just be patient and wish me luck. Regards, Jeff Wexler

My father did not win the election. The interim president, Steve Poster, elected (appointed) by the National Executive Board, has now been elected by the membership vote. It was a very dirty campaign, riddled with all sorts of lies about Haskell, and it paid off for Poster. We'll see what happens --- the struggle to make the union a democratic organization responsive to the real needs of the workers will continue. Do not be fooled by the one democratic act of holding an election --- to a certain extent I guess the union is also subject to that concept that we get the government that we deserve --- in this case, there was a real chance for fundamental change and it has bee…

Quote from Scott: "Can you put up a web page that the user fills out and then has to enter the coded letter/number message which then sends a email to their address that then have to click on to verify?" No, I am not able to do that routine (which I know is a common technique for avoiding all the nonsense I am going through). The software package that runs this Forum does not provide for that sort of sign up. If I were a little more skilled in html and real web construction, I could put up such a page on my regular website (not this Forum) which could sign people up, authorize and all that stuff. I am not able to do it on my own, sorry. The way it has been working …

I remember when I started out it seemed clear to me that before I would be comfortable mixing I would need to know how everything works on the Nagra III. I also knew that I would not have to become a full scale engineer to master the machine. Within a few months I did in fact learn almost everything needed to know about the Nagra. Cut to today: so many devices, so little time, so many demands from production. I get frequent questions, almost on weekly basis, from other sound mixers using equipment that is either the same or similar to equipment I am using. Sometimes these questions are really fundamental --- not about quirky undiscovered features or bugs or exotic non…

I received this by e-mail yesterday. Anybody having these problems? Sound Devices would like to make our 7-Series owners, users, and resellers aware of a know issue relating to WAV files generated by 7-Series recorders. ISSUE *************** Wave files (Broadcast Wave) recorded by a 7-Series recorder with the attributes below may not properly import into the latest release of Avid or Pro Tools. These files may appear to the application as unreadable. It is becoming increasingly difficult for me to authorize new member sign-ups. Those wishing to join should use something in their chosen login name that would let me know they are a real person wishing to join. The spam bots never use regular names but real people should --- this will help me sign people up quickly. Thank you, Jeff Wexler

Greeting to Carl Rudisill, I would just like to say what a treat it was to "bug" you for an hour while you were filming in Savannah. As a green mixer in a tiny market, it means alot when an experienced mixer takes the time to talk with you. Carl was especially understanding as I hovered around his sound cart on my first visit to a "real" set. So far, every professional mixer I have met has been very open with their knowledge and nothing but supportive. Thanks also to Whit Norris, who over the past year, has been a sound mentor to myself and Whitney Ince. Without the kind words from mixers like these, we F.N.G.s would feel disheartened and overwhelmed. Thanks to all…

May need a sound person with some gear for a live radio broadcast early Sunday morning 25 Feb; pretty simple, really, as just 4-5 people sitting around a table talking for a couple hours. studiomprd@earthlink.net

Congratulations go out to all our sound friends who have been honored this year by the Academy: Lee Orloff, Paul Massey, Christopher Boyes for "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest", Walt Martin, John Reitz, Dave Campbell, Gregg Rudloff for "Flags of Our Fathers", Willie Burton, Michael Minkler, Bob Beemer for "Dreamgirls", Ivan Sharrock, Andy Nelson, Anna Behlmer for "Blood Diamond", Fernando Camara, Kevin O'Connell, Greg P. Russell for "Apocalypto". I will be pulling for Lee Orloff who has been nominated 7 times (I think may have won once for "Terminator 2"). I am also very pleased that Andy Nelson and Anna Behlmer were nominated again, this time for Ed Zwick's…

Sad news. Carl Countryman of Countryman microphones passed away on October 26, 2006 of a sudden heart attack. He was a good friend and an industry innovator with his B6 lav mic to name just one of his many accomplishments. He will be missed. Eric

Hey, everybody. Pardon the shameless plug, but I recently started my own blog about sound for film and TV called sync.sound.cinema. Essentially, I'm trying to create a place where audio newbies and video folks can get a brief tour of the sound-for-picture world, along with tips, techniques, and a little history. I'm always looking for new info, so if you folks out there know of anything that would be of interest, please send it my way. Link: http://syncsoundcinema.blogspot.com/ Thanks, Christian
