Good Job Gene. Thank you, Frank.

I am not looking to start a political discussion here. I'm asking about what the real effect on the tax situation of what I think of as a typical JWS member will be of the new tax bill that seems likely to pass in the next few days. By typical I mean someone who is running a 1-person indie sound business, mostly as a location sound mixer using gear they own themselves, and who has many currently deductible small-business type tax expenses. I've read everything from dire warnings about the loss of any deductions for home office, tools, office supplies, advertising, travel, phone, mileage, continuing ed., etc etc to others saying that all that isn't true. What does an…

It was 17 years ago today, that I lost a friend and Assistant Cameraman, Brent Lon Hershman. "Brent's Rule" was the rallying cry for "12 On, 12 Off". 17 very long years later, we are still waiting. Miss you Brent.

Details released at Pro Light & Sound today, the new Allen & Heath Qu-16. Take a look at the details here, http://tinyurl.com/c9vjdp2, but the short version is..... 16 mic/line IP channels 10 mix channels 17 moving faders 18 track USB recorder built in D-Snake socket for CAT5 cable connection to remote IP/OP box Built in FX Its an Allen & Heath, borrowing R&D and more from i-Live and GLD series, so it will sound great. The two obvious weaknesses for film and TV work are mains only powering (uses up to 82watts, so could feasibly be powered by 12v LiFE Po batts with inverter) and no TC capabilities. Oh, and the price...... they are …

I am investigating ways to make changes to this particular section on JWSOUND. The hope would be that I could make some minor changes, just to that specific section, that would help avoid or minimize some of the uncomfortable things that have occurred there over the years. The simplest thing I can do, right now, is to make it a Moderated section. This will create a little delay with new posts and it will be a little bit more work for me, but it could provide the chance to vet the seller and their post before it goes public. Self-policing and common sense have kept the section functioning very nicely for the most part and for that I am very grateful. It may well be th…

Got an email from the UPM stating that they are starting some construction this month, and are working to start shooting n August. WHAAAAAAAT?!!! I always maintained that schools would be open before network shows started up again. But they’re not... Seems overly hopeful to me. I’ve heard about reality starting back up in my town, but August seems just crazy. With virus numbers going up due to a Deranged Cheeto who’s only “leadership” is calling for a civil war and all... I have seen numerous pictures of sound carts strapped to process trailers or camera cars and have always wondered why. My experience has been, #1, there is no room for a cart and #2, why? I have never needed more than two mics in a car and find that, once it is rigged, it is much more comfortable to ride shotgun with the camera car driver. Warm in winter and cool in summer. My boom rides the trailer wearing a comtek to track down squeaks and rattles and we usually plant a mic so I can hear what's going on on the trailer and to get sticks. I also stick a speakeasy in the car with a PTT so the director can talk to the talent. The hardest part is usually getting the enti…

I just heard that our very own Jan McLaughlin has won an Emmy for "Nurse Jackie". This is great and so well deserved. Whenever someone can get all the results, please post them here so we can celebrate all our good people who have been honored at the Emmys this year.

It appears zaxcom.com has been hacked. I use the NoScript plugin for Firefox, so I don't know how it pulls up on other computers, but here's a screenshot of the header on the Nomad page (attached).

Has anyone played with the new Zaxcom RX200? It sounds like an amazing new receiver. I really like the idea of the wide band AND the fact that is transmits timecode. I would love some feedback if anyone has any.

5 microphones haven been stolen from me from out of a studio in Cologne. It's probably a long shot posting it here, but who knows where these things turn up. The mic were taken sometime between Friday evening (7th November) and Monday morning (10th November). The studio was locked and alarm-secured and there were no break-in marks, whatever that means. If anyone sees one of the mice or gets them offered by someone in a dodgy deal, please let me know or the Police in Cologne. Of course, the mice were insured, but I want *my* mics back, not some new sterile mic! 1. Schoeps SuperCMIT (this was actually rented from Kortwich) serial number 0215 2. Schoeps CMIT (…

SAG to seek strike authorization Talks collapse between Guild, AMPTP By DAVE MCNARY In a move toward Hollywood's second strike in a year, the Screen Actors Guild will seek a strike authorization from its 120,000 members -- prompting an angry response from the congloms. SAG made the announcement early Saturday morning after federal mediator Juan Carlos Gonzalez abandoned efforts to bring the two sides together, following their first face-to-face meeting in four months. Neither side budged significantly during two lengthy sessions Thursday and Friday with negotiators spending much of the time reiterating previous positions. Read the rest of the article here: http:/…

Fascinating story: Jamaica Inn: Viewers complain over 'mumbling actors' Monday's launch episode of new BBC period drama Jamaica Inn sparked more than 100 complaints, after sound issues left viewers struggling to understand what was being said on screen. The BBC later apologised to viewers, claiming the "issues with the sound levels" could not be altered while the drama was on air. "We are adjusting the dialogue levels in episode two and three to address audience concerns so they can enjoy the rest of the drama and would like to apologise to those viewers who were affected," said a statement, ahead of Tuesday's second instalment. "It sounded like listening th…
