Hello friends, Next month I begin a short film, which based on puppet show with three puppeteers. The entire set will take a place in a studio and the puppeteers will move in ״burrows" - therefore, I would use lavalieres. At the beginning, I thought to mic the puppeteers as usual - at the chest. But, probably they will look up for the puppets (as you can see at the reference that I attached) and it will affect the sound. so, now I'm thinking to mic them at the forehead, with a forehead sweat band - so no matter to where they will look, the mic always will "follow" them. I would like to hear your advice, from your experience. p.s - I used in the pas…

"Over the weekend, spectrum sensing prototypes were tested by the FCC at the FedEx field in Maryland prior to Saturday's game between the Washington Redskins and the Buffalo Bills. Shure, a microphone manufacturer said in a press release issued Sunday that the spectrum-sensing white-space devices caused "harmful interference to wireless microphones" during the live event." Since no one else brought it up: In a surprising move arranged by prosecutors in Los Angeles and Washington, the authorities in Switzerland arrested the film director Roman Polanski late Saturday as he arrived at the Zurich airport, paving the way for his possible extradition to the United States in connection with a 32-year-old sex case. Mr. Polanski, 76, a French citizen, was detained as he arrived to receive an award at the Zurich Film Festival. Although he is expected to oppose extradition, the arrest raised a strong possibility that Mr. Polanski would be returned to the United States to face sentencing under his conviction for having had sex with a 13-year-old …

I heard that Boom Op. David Allen Smith died recently. I know he had been ill. Does anyone have any information? It would be a shame for him to be overlooked. He was dedicated sound man, and a fun and talented guy.

This letter went out to I.A. members regarding Axiom demanding that money be paid back. I am posting the letter for the benefit of non-union members who may have had dealings with the now bankrupt payroll service. Dear Local 695 Members: Following is urgent information concerning Axium Bankcruptcy from IATSE Vice President Michael F. Miller, Jr. that you be aware of. "The IATSE has just been advised that a letter was sent by the Axium Bankruptcy Trustee, Howard M. Hi guys, I'm about to make a move and buy the necessary tools in order to expend my "reception environment". I read all over the internet, and I made my own research - but, I still have some questions, and I would like to hear your opinion about your antenna distribution systems. About my current gear, I have 3 Lectrosonics UCR 411a, 3 SMQV (all block 26) and Sound Devises 664. My workspace - sometimes it is a bag job, and sometimes a cart job. Based on that I started to look for the best solution for me. Since I already have receivers, I don't find a reason to buy VR Field ($2,300 without modules) or the Venue ($1,500 without modules). Therefore, I'm thinking…

Do we want to keep it at the same place? It was pretty crammed this past year, and I have a feeling it is just going to keep growing with more people (which is great!). I like the fact that it is close to the convention center, though. Is there anything else down there that won't cost an arm and a leg?

Well, another big studio project has decided to not shoot in Los Angeles. I'm currently in Atlanta on a show, in very busy Georgia with so much work that they can barely fill all the key positions. Also currently shooting here is Jeff Wexler, Bill Kaplan, Eric Pierce and Scott Smith who shoots in Savannah. Now North Carolina, which years back had a lot of work in Wilmington, has snagged Iron Man 3. From Deadline Hollywood: “The rumors are true,” a North Carolina TV station announced when the governor flew to the hometown movie studio to break the news this past week. “Tony Stark and the third installment of the Iron Man movie franchise will f…

Just to vent a little bit... Am I the only person noticing that the sound quality on local news has been completely going to hell over the last couple of years? For at least the last week, KNBC Channel 4 news (the NBC O&O here in LA) has had some kind of a weird mix problem where every time they go to a bumper, the music only comes out of the left channel. Dialog (anchors) are in both -- phantom center channel -- as you would expect. Commercials are fine. Taped segments are fine. Bumpers go to hell. I also notice quite a few news studios that have such horrific acoustics, they sound for all the world like a tile bathroom. WNBC Channel 4 sounds like that…

I don't use Protools but I think its worth mentioning that the latest version is now software only, meaning you can use different interfaces or none at all to interact with the app. http://www.gearjunkies.com/news_info.php?news_id=5705

If you don't pay for a good audio person, your audio suffers. If you don't pay for a good pyro person, someone can get seriously hurt. This close call is unbelievable. And apparently many people on the set have not been paid and have walked off due to dangerous circumstances. You pay peanuts, you get monkeys…. http://badassdigest.com/2014/02/13/stunning-footage-of-a-movie-explosion-that-almost-gets-deadly

Did anyone watch The Sound of Music Live on NBC last night/have any insight on how the sound was recorded? Definitely sounded like lavs, but I wonder about placement, how they dealt with costume changes, and playback. Watched the behind the scenes doc, but as usual there was not a single mention of the production sound crew. Just curious what folks thought over here. -Michael

Wave Agent software has been updated to revision 1.16. This new version addresses an iXML change that Wave Agent made to files it updated. The change caused WAV files to be unimportable in certain software applications. Download the latest revision of Wave Agent from the following link www.sounddevices.com/download/waveagent.html

Late last night while working on a low budget movie, the Director/main actor had a scene where he gets into a heated argument with another character. I had a transmitter strapped to his ankle which came loose during the action. As he walked off screen he threw a tantrum and kicked his leg over and over until the connector broke and the transmitter flung into the wall. Then he walked past me and said "Fucking sound, you only have one job to do!" I've encountered plenty of asshole talent, but personally never experienced destroying of equipment. I wanted to take a walk right then and there. I did demand that the transmitter and mic be replaced by today, or he doesn'…

I have installed and activated an updated Tapatalk plug-in for our newly updated site. I don't really have a way of testing but we can only hope that it is working for our Tapatalk users. Remember, you may have to use your Display Name to login since IPB has dropped support for the older username/login name in favor of just the one name.
