One of the main reasons some have wanted to go to a Mac Mini setup as opposed to using their PowerBook or Mac Book Pro laptop has been the difficulty and inconvenience of the laptop form factor when trying to use it on a cart shelf. The advantages of using the laptop over a Mac Mini are obvious: no DCD powering problems, for example, and the biggest advantage --- you may already own the laptop and not have to purcdhase a Mac Mini. I may be th first to find this out (or the last if everybody already knows this) but how about using the laptop with an external monitor and keyboard and the screen CLOSED with the laptop tucked away on a slim shelf? See below an Apple Knowledge…

Microsoft bombshell: no EFI support for Vista Digg: Microsoft revealed today that it will not support EFI booting for Windows Vista on its launch. The news will be a shock for owners of Intel Macs who had hoped they would be able to dual-boot between Windows Vista and OS X. Intel Macs only support booting via EFI. I don't know what "EFI" is. Could one of the more computer saavy people here fill me in? Regards, Jeff Wexler

from Mac newsletter, TidBits: But the latest Mac mini add-on takes the notion of a headless computer and turns it, well, on its head. The miniPLUS from MacStalgia adds a display via a small color LCD that's part of a snap-on case for the top of a Mac mini (either PowerPC or Intel Core models). It uses passive convection to avoid an additional fan. <http://www.macstalgia.com/> The LCD is just 9 inches measured diagonally, which shouldn't be a surprise: the miniPLUS resembles a Macintosh Plus in both its external appearance, updated to the brushed aluminum look of the Mac mini, and its capability to accept 1.44 MB floppy disks. Th…

Any ideas on how to do this? This is easy on XP - though lots of people don't know about it. Also, I have never been able to figure out if I can use the keyboard shortcuts menu on the System Preferences pane to do this. It simply won't work. I'd be happy if i can say - hit Apple-Option-C to start the calculator. -vin

Jeff et al--how would you compare the new WAVE editor software and Audacity. I've been pretty happy w/ Audacity (all the more since it was free)--it's done everything I needed to do location-edit and playback-wise. What's better about WAVE for $250? Philip Perkins

Sorry as I find myself occasionally reminiscing over this or that old piece of computerware this website reminds me of all the pieces of silicon that have passed through my hands. http://www.oldcomputers.net/ None of it is as sexy as the '68 GTO I let go before I knew any better, but...... First Look: iPod Hi-Fi Get to know Apple’s all-new iPod speaker system By Dan Frakes from maccentral.com Apple’s iPod Hi-Fi speaker system, unveiled at a Tuesday press event, marks the company’s first foray into the big-ticket iPod accessory market. But in seeking to carve out its own space with the iPod Hi-Fi, Apple couldn’t help but draw comparisons to speaker offerings already available. ? That much was clear during Steve Jobs’ presentation, which included images of some of the current “homeâ€ speakers on the market, including JBL’s $180 On Stage and Bose’s $300 SoundDock (which Playlist considers desktop rather than home speakers, incidentally)…

Jobs told the assembled reporters that Apple is on track to convert its entire professional line of Macintosh computers to Intel CPUs this year. Apple t…
