Just a heads up..... It seems like quite a few of us host personal/resume sites on mac.com accounts, so you should all know they will be shut down in June 2012. With iCould becoming a free service in the Fall, they are phasing out MobileMe/iTools/whatever. iWeb won't be updated again, and the one click updating will be gone. In theory the current iWeb should keep running under 10.7, but you would need host it elsewhere. Kind of a bummer! I haven't figured out what I'm going to do yet. I have done hand coded HTML sites, PHP etc but iWeb is so easy to make a clean site that's easy to update. It doesn't get a lot of traffic, but the traffic it does get is often…

I had never heard of active cables before... this is very interesting (and also helps explain the $50. cable being sold). "As noted by Arstechnica and iFixIt, Apple's new $50 Thunderbolt cable is actually a "smart" or "active" cable that contains circuitry and firmware. Arstechnica explains: A source within the telecom industry explained to Ars that active cables are commonly used at data rates above 5Gbps. These cables contain tiny chips at either end that are calibrated to the attenuation and dispersion properties of the wire between them. Compensating for these properties "greatly improves the signal-to-noise ratio" for high-bandwidth data transmission…

Late-night comedy show Conan has taken the unusual step of satirizing Final Cut Pro X. A skit from the latest episode (see below) features members of the show's production team supposedly praising the new video editing suite. The clip itself is badly edited though, with sudden cuts, missing titles, out-of-sync audio and shifting color and lighting. While the sketch is tongue-in-cheek, it does reflect growing criticism of Pro X amongst professionals. The software is missing some commonly-expected features, such as support for older Final Cut project files, or output to tape, which is used by TV studios. Some of these gaps could be filled in future updates. …

I'm working with a script supervisor on a short film who asked me to jam her laptop with my timecode. I said, "sweet let me grab that cable." I jammed timecode to her ScriptE software using a iDevices cable (3.5mm 4 conductor TRRS Male to 3-Pin XLR Female Microphone Input Jack) because the new Mac Book has the same headphone/microphone jack as an iPhone. Both her's and my other cables didn't show timecode at all (1/4 inch female to 3.5 stereo jack). With my iDevice cable, timecode would show up when I was plugged into her Mac, but her timecode window would show zeros across the board every few seconds and once I'm unplugged her timecode is lost. I didn't want to always b…

I don't know if anyone else has used the Mac App Store (included in 10.6.7 and installed for you without asking) but I just used for the first time. I found an application called "Hype" which is a web page design and HTML5 creator and decided to download it and purchase. The "Hype" website launched the Mac App Store on my Mac, I made the purchase with my Apple ID and it was installed and up and running in about 45 seconds. The process was very quick, informative and did not do anything without telling me what it was doing. It has always been super easy to install programs on the Mac (certainly compared to the computers running the other operating system) but this was even…

Full article here: http://gigaom.com/apple/apple-said-to-have-hired-the-audio-genius-behind-thx/ Apple has reportedly hired Tomlinson Holman as its new audio chief, according to a tweet by Leo Laporte Wednesday morning. Laporte said he had it “on good authorityâ€ that Holman “is joining Apple to run audio.â€ Holman is the brain behind Lucasfilm’s THX sound, and the world’s first 10.2 surround sound system. Apple had yet to respond to a request for confirmation as of this writing. Holman is currently a film sound professor at the University of Southern California, and he has received an Academy Award for Technical Achievement. He spent 15 years as the corpo…

Can anyone think of a way to get the Zaxconvert software running on an iPad? It would be easy enough to access the files from a TRX900 or ZFR100/200 using a card reader adaptor. It would be pretty cool if you could also convert the files and then dump them onto a USB thumb drive. It would be nice if Zaxcom created an app for it (Lectrosonics have come out with some cool uses for the iPad so far), but assuming they don't, is there another way to get the software running? I remember seeing a DOS emulator a while ago, I think it's still in the app store. Are there any windows or OSX emulators that would do the trick? Anyway, just an idea I had bouncing around. Rob

Very troubling news story: CNBC Engadget Mac Rumors CNN I'd like to wish the best for the guy. Pancreatic cancer is so tough to overcome -- he's beaten it for almost seven years, but it's a persistent, deadly disease. I've been a long-time Jobs observer -- I won't call myself a fan, because I think the man's frustrating, difficult, argumentative, and capable of being very abusive, according to friends of mine who know him personally. But I also think he's one of the most brilliant men of the last 20 years, somebody who truly changed the world in many ways. I've often said, "if he only made Pixar a success, or just made the Mac, or just invented the iP…

I bought a yearly subscription for $29.00 a year it is great www.pdffiller.com It allows you to fill out any PDF form and sign it via your mouse then you can either print, email or fax the PDF. It also saves all forms online. I have been using it to fill out production paper work and time cards that I use to have to print and fax or print and scan. It has saved me a ton of time and paper so check it out.

one for the "other computers"... as OS X seems to be left out of the support loop, perhaps as much to do with Apple as Dell, but an interesting product nonetheless, especially if it works in single touch mode with Macs. Has anyone ever used any of Dell's other touchscreens with Macs before? http://accessories.dell.com/sna/products/displays/productdetail.aspx?c=ca&l=en&s=dhs&cs=cadhs1&sku=320-1819 Dell ST2220T 21.5" W Multi-touch monitor with IPS

But with the new year, time to purchase a financial software to keep track of my checking account, other accounts, just general stuff. I need a PC laptop--nothing fancy, it just needs to run the new "native" Sadie 6 (which ran on a 6 yr old Dell I borrowed this week). Whatever it ends up being has to use 32 bit WXP or 7 for now (not 64 bit and not Home versions). Lots of strange brands out there---are Acers ok? Dells? I'm looking at a sub $1k box to do simple edits, no recording or etc.. phil p
