from MacRumors quoting Wired: "Wired claims that Apple will be launching a new version of its Mac mini computer at Macworld Expo San Francisco in January. Wired cites an Apple corporate employee as the source who could only confirm a release date at Macworld Expo. The Mac mini has been long overdue for updates leading many to assume that it had been abandoned by Apple. Recent reports have indeed suggested that a Mac mini update is imminent. The author speculates the new Mac mini will adopt many of the recent physical and environmental improvements in physical design as well as include the newly introduced mini Display Port." - Jeff Wexler

So I've been thinking about it for a while now, and I want to try and incorporate a Mac Mini into my cart. So here's a preliminary shopping list: 1 - Mac Mini. (2.0 GHz with superdrive and max out the Ram) 2 - Touchscreen monitor (still narrowing down the choices, maybe the Ikan V8000T) Or suggestions ? 3 - Power adaptor. Thinking of this PSU: CarNetix P2140 http://www.carnetix.com/P2140/CNXP2140.htm 4 - Keyboard / Mouse. What are people using ? What would fit nicely on a cart ? 5 - Mac Mini mount. looking at this one : http://h-sq.com/products/minimount/index.html Some questions I have for those already running a mini on there cart. What kind of screen reso…

On Powerpage.org there is a link to how to install OS X on an MSI Wind netbook. What is not to clear to me is whether you MUST use the hacked installer he mentions getting from a pirate bit-torrent site or whether you can install a legitimate OS X from a regular disk. "Chris Barylick As much as you'd like Apple to bring out a cheap, nifty netbook, it may not happen for some time to come. That being said, Brian Chen of wired threw together the following video tutorial as to how to install and run Mac OS X 10.5 on an MSi Wind netbook. Though not for the techie faint of heart, Chen does a good job explaining the process and alleviates some of the fear that may come …

Has anyone had any experience with this? http://laptop.org/en/laptop/index.shtml It looks like a possible on-set utility computer. Not necessarily for BoomRecorder or other recording apps, but file transfer, data editing, web surfing/email, even billing. And there is quite an extensive community of developers and add-on merchants. Developers are running Fedora or Ubuntu on it with thumb drives. It is additionally sub-marketed as a hardware learning tool, i.e. there are sites that explain how to easily take the computer apart and repair it, and sites that explain how to use the Terminal to program and interact with the Sugar OS. Needless to say, the philanthro…

Last Wednesday I rolled playback from my iPod. The signal chain was: iPod running Oscemote (generating OSC messages), logged into a Wifi network created by my MacBook Pro, which is running Osculator. Osculator listens to OSC messages and parses them into MIDI events, then sends them back out. In my case, it was sending them into Logic Pro, which I had configured to take specific incoming MIDI events and use them to control the transport. Timecode was an audio track within Logic. I configured this mess to recognize two commands: Play and Back to Start. For the trial run, I kept it simple - but this could be easily expanded to include cue points, scrub forward/backwar…

Is the Mac Mini a dead product? There is speculation that it has been "end of lifed" by Apple and not yet replaced by any product. 15:46 EDT Gizmodo reports that the Mac Mini is no longer available to resellers and may finally have been terminated as the lowest-priced (and remarkably reliable) Mac model: Apple Stops Mac Mini Shipments to Retailers, Says to Expect No More The Mac Mini may be pronounced dead as soon as today's Apple earnings conference call, as two major retailers in Europe have confirmed to me that they can't order any more of the little computers. While this could signal an updated model coming in, they have been told by Apple to expect no mor…

Open DNS

I'm sure Im preaching to the choir, but I just reassigned my router's DNS addresses to those from OpenDNS as opposed to the ones used by my ISP. Internet response is snappier by a noticeable increment. Probably about twice as fast, although I'm on Verizon which is slow unless you are on their fiber service. This adds protection for your computer in other ways as well. http://www.opendns.com Best regard, Jim

There is an excellent and thorough article available that discusses legacy ports and technology with a good history of the computer industry on this issue. It is a long article but helps to understand the relationships between technology development, manufacturing costs and marketing, consumer acceptance and so forth. It is a good read for anyone wishing to add to their knowledge about these things and aids in thoughtful analysis of the current state of computer hardware development. I believe there is useful information here but I need to warn everyone that the article IS rather Mac-centric (I am sure no one here is surprised by that). READ IT HERE Regards, Jeff W…

from PowerPage website: In a surprising announcement today, shareware company Techspansion, makers of some incredibly useful audio and video conversion utilities, announced that it will be closing its doors. The following was found on the web site: VisualHub, AudialHub, and iSquint have been discontinued. ...After much soul-searching (it's not you, it's me), for personal reasons, Techspansion is closing its virtual doors. The Support Forum and Support E-mail will be available for a while longer to take care of any remaining issues for you. Thanks for all your support. It's been a fun ride. I'm sorry to see this go and VisualHub has been one of the most u…

Someone, keeping a close eye on the patent office, offers this possibility: In April, Apple filed an updated 52-page application for a patent on an extensive multi-touch interface for a full Mac OS X-based system. The illustrations that accompany the application look like the long-heralded but non-existent "iTablet." http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080828-newly-unearthed-apple-patent-raises-hopes-for-fabled-itablet.html

The latest ranking in the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) shows Apple still topping the list as highest in customer satisfaction for personal computers. Apple's customer satisfaction score reached a record 85, which was 10 points higher than Dell, its closest competitor. "We haven't seen anything like this before, where a company scores 10 points over its nearest rival," said Claes Fornell, the head of the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI), conducted quarterly by the University of Michigan. Fornell believes that part of Apple's climb in customer satisfaction has been due to a particularly poor response to Window's Vista, which may have contribu…

This looks cool but the description from the developer is loaded with all sorts of disclaimers. Could be a fun toy but not terribly accurate considering the developer states that readings could be off by as much as plus or minus 6db! from the developer: "Due to popular demand, SoundMeter has arrived to turn your iPhone into a handheld sound level meter (SLM). The iPhone’s built-in and headset microphones exhibit a remarkably flat frequency response, making them suitable for basic sound level measurements. However, due to sample rate limitations and frequency response degradation, SoundMeter is not recommended for use with the built-in microphone of first-generation i…

Hi group Has anyone been using Write UDF with the Macbook, and what is this program able to do for us? I use the Macbook to print out sound reports when turning a DVD RAM disc in for dailies, and the Macbook sometimes takes a few inserts of the disc before it will recognize it.Just wondering of this program would help, and does it also make the drive able to write to DVD RAM? hey gang, I finished my site a few days ago on iweb and so far so good. I realized today that the photo album page no longer functions as desired. It did before, and I have not messed with it, so Im a little confused why it would why. The "slide show button" is no longer active, and when you move the cursor over the individual photographs it changes to the hand, but once you click on it nothing happens. Again It functioned properly a few days ago, and seemingly out of nowhere, it now doesn't. Any pointers?? http://web.mac.com/indaudio

One of my sites that is hosted on my .Mac (now Me.Com) account is behaving badly after this transition to Me.Com, MobileMe, etc. Anyone else having problems updating sites hosted on their Apple accounts? What do you know? Regards, Jeff Wexler

If you would like to update your phone a few hours before its officially released. http://www.macrumors.com/2008/07/10/iphone-2-0-firmware-5a347-available-early/ Once again, digging through Apple's XML files has revealed the url to the iPhone 2.0 Firmware that is presently available on Apple's servers. One of our readers found this new firmware image: iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw (http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-4955.20080710.bgt53/iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw) This build is slightly higher than the one of the latest iPhone Firmware Beta (5A345) which was also spotted on shipping iPhone 3Gs. I am looking into some software that shares quite a lot of similar attributes to other programs I have used but adds one feature, support for Broadcast Wave timecode metadata, that I have not seen. From the TwistedWave website: TwistedWave can read and save music metadata, such as the artist name, song title or album art from files in the aiff, wav, mp3, mp4, flac and ogg/vobis format. Additionally, TwistedWave supports BWAV metadata, as well as Soundminer metadata for wav and aiff files. Furthermore, these metadata can be saved as foreign metadata in flac files. ... TwistedWave handles multichannel files as easily as mono or stereo files. Multichannel Audio Units c…

I've been using MYOB for my accounting and billing software on the Mac. I've toyed with the idea of moving off MYOB to iBiz. Anybody else using something other than MYOB on the Mac for billing and accounting? MYOB is a great program, but has had its fair share of bugs (I've even had to pay for tech support to report a bug, which they later confirmed ... then ticked me off by having me pay for the upgrade that fixed that bug). However, the program is also really overkill for our business. Usually we bill by our day rate, have gear rental, and sometimes overtime. Nothing that basic accounting software and billing software can't handle. Thus, the reason I'm wondering if …

Well it has started to happen. With all the attention that Apple has been getting lately the hackers are starting to turn there attention to the platform. Unfortunately I think they will find a mother-load of unprotected victims because most Mac users believe the myth that Macs are impervious to virus and Trojan attacks. Of course they aren't. Here's the story on the Trojan just discovered and starting to propagate. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/06/23/mac_trojan/ ----Courtney
