I just read an article that has much the same perspective I was trying to say in my post regarding what "professional" means in our ever-changing, not always for the better, world of media creation, creativity, software and so forth. One statement quoted here says a lot: "When it comes down to it, Final Cut Pro X isn’t about alienating professionals: It’s about finding out just what a “professional” looks like in this day and age. That line has blurred tremendously in the last decade thanks to widely-available—and inexpensive!—personal technology. Filmmakers are putting together features for $11,000. TV crews have gone digital; and that’s not even covering the amoun…

Mac Mini for cart

I am considering buying my first Mac, a Mini, for the cart. I am thinking about using a 12" (or so) touch-screen monitor as the user interface. This is a question for the Mac guys on the group; which version of this "box" will run some WinXP apps that I will still want to use in this production dedicated machine? Does the G4 1.4G with superdrive have the Intel CPU? Thanks.

Interesting price-comparison between Macs and PCs over on the Computerworld website. While it's widely believed by many Windows users that Macs are the "overpriced" hardware choice, this PC-centric website comes to the opposite opinion. A couple of caveats: the piece only compares laptops and low-priced machines like the iMac, but still the article is fairly even-handed. Read what they have to say here: http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&taxonomyName=macintosh_os&articleId=9023959&taxonomyId=123&intsrc=kc_feat Any of you who have anti-Mac friends and co-workers might use this as a little positive ammunition…

Hello! I've had my Lacie Rugged decide to just not connect on several occasions on location recently, and even though I've got the recordings on my 788's internal drive which I then backup on my bigger drive at home, I'm paranoid and like to make as many copies as possible So, can anyone recommend a sturdy location hard drive instead of the Rugged? Cheers! Eren

To those who know... My son wants to run some PC games on his MacBook Pro. Parallels seems to be the go to option, but it appears he must buy BOTH Parallels and Windows. I think we have an old Windows install disk from an old laptop, but it might be serial number specific and very outdated. Are there any other options? Can I buy "used" Parallels and Windows? Senator disclaimer... I have been to the Parallels website, and have done some searches of various forums, but I am asking this group of trustworthy friends and colleagues to see if someone here has specific and personal knowledge. Thanks, Robert

Interestingly enough, many have chosen NOT to update to Lion because Lion has broken all version of Quicken 2005 to 2007, the most commonly used software from Intuit. Intuit is still a sucky company, no doubt about that, but at least now there is a way to update to Lion and still run Quicken. from Mac Rumors site: Intuit Releases Lion-Compatible Quicken 2007 for Mac Thursday March 8, 2012 2:09 pm PST by Eric Slivka Last December, Intuit announced that it would be developing a version of its Quicken 2007 for Mac software compatible with OS X Lion, targeting "early spring" for a release. Quicken 2007 has remained a popular option for users of personal f…

I tried to connect my 744T to my PowerBook (running Leopard now) and I could not get the Hard Drive to mount on the Desktop. Courtney explained to me that with the new firmware I have to make a menu selection (Firewire connect) HDD+STOP to access Internal Hard Drive. This finally worked but mounting, unmounting and file transfer speed was very slow. I don't know if this is a Leopard (OS X 10.5.1) problem or something wrong with my 744T. I have now updated to v. 2.40 firmware and there seems to be some improvement. Anyone else having any of these problems? Regards, Jeff Wexler

appeared in Macworld: "Macworld's Reliability Survey By Dan Miller (dmiller@macworld.com) This week, Macworld.com featured the findings of a reliability survey we conducted for the June 2007 issue. We did the survey for a couple reasons. For one thing, Mac users have several alternatives when it comes to getting their Macs serviced: Apple stores, authorized service providers, the smart guy down the hall. It'd be good to know which one is best. For another, we see a lot of anecdotal reports about Mac problems--from yellowing wrist-rests to exploding batteries--and wanted to find out just how prevalent those problems really are. Read our reliability-and-satisfaction…

Network storage suggestions?
by Guest jimg- 17 replies

Hello to all, I'm considering going to a network storage device of some sort for the iTunes library here in the house. I've been using my desktop Mac as a music server of sorts and it just seems awfully wastful to keep it running 24/7. Anybody have any suggestions about a manufacturer or model, either pro or con? I figure about 500 GB should hold us for a while, since the library is currently about 270 GB, but something that's expandable via USB or Firewire would be great. Thanks, Jim

Question for the hive mind: I've got a 3 year old MacBook Pro that I use for playback work. Pro Tools runs pretty much fine - but I've decided to upgrade the hard drive to an SSD and up the RAM because every now and then I get a hiccup with bigger sessions. I can't quite decide though if I should upgrade my OS (still on 10.9.5) to the latest, which probably means needed to upgrade my Pro Tools from v10 up to 11 or 12. Normally I'm pretty good with upgrading, but since I've largely stopped doing post work, I've not felt the need to always keep up with the upgrades. I suppose I'm now at the point where I simply can't decide...Do I upgrade the OS and PT software - or ju…

hey gang, I finished my site a few days ago on iweb and so far so good. I realized today that the photo album page no longer functions as desired. It did before, and I have not messed with it, so Im a little confused why it would why. The "slide show button" is no longer active, and when you move the cursor over the individual photographs it changes to the hand, but once you click on it nothing happens. Again It functioned properly a few days ago, and seemingly out of nowhere, it now doesn't. Any pointers?? http://web.mac.com/indaudio

This caught my attention: “The features and capabilities of iPad give us the ability to set a new standard for multitrack recording and editing on a mobile device,” said Rim Buntinas, WaveMachine Labs’ CEO. “Users of the Auria app can play 48 mono or stereo 24bit/96 kHz tracks simultaneously, record up to 24 of those tracks simultaneously, and also edit and mix with familiar tools. With its portability and all-day battery life, iPad has revolutionized recording for audio professionals allowing artists to record anywhere.” So will that mean both Pro-Tools and Final Cut Pro will have iPad apps? Here is Apple's Press Release. http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2…

It seems like no matter what webpage I visit these days I have to click out of an annoying pop up ad or video that automatically starts streaming. I normally browse in Safari and have pop-ups blocked. Just wondering if there's a better way of blocking all the commercials. Any info is appreciated.

Well, things are getting interesting! I enjoyed reading Jason Snell's post "Exile from Dongletown". MagSafe is back, more ports, improved keyboard after all their problems... And an insane processor with more dramatic peformance increases than most people realize. The memory bandwidth of the Max version is incredible.

I need a PC laptop--nothing fancy, it just needs to run the new "native" Sadie 6 (which ran on a 6 yr old Dell I borrowed this week). Whatever it ends up being has to use 32 bit WXP or 7 for now (not 64 bit and not Home versions). Lots of strange brands out there---are Acers ok? Dells? I'm looking at a sub $1k box to do simple edits, no recording or etc.. phil p

So I've tested FreqFinder on iOS 8 on my iPod touch and the simulators that Apple provides, but I don't have a physical iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus to test on. Does anyone have an iPhone 6 and FreqFinder? Does anyone have an iPhone 6 and wants FreqFinder?

I'm about to buy a 744T recorder and want to buy a MacBook to burn deliverable CD-Rs as well as a platform for future Boom Recorder use. It's been suggested I use Roxio Toast as a burner program. Any comments? Do I need this software, or is there effective software already bundled in the Mac? This will be my first Apple computer. The other option is to use the SD/ Panasonic DVD RAM unit. Any insights welcome. Chris Newton

Just upgraded to my new 15.3" Macbook Pro. My old Powerbook G4 of course had a modem where I could send faxes over my land line. I used FAXstf Pro. What do you recommend for Internet faxing? There are multiple choices that give you a fax phone number and use email. The costs are all over the map, from about $17/mo. down to about $3/mo. Your experiences and advice will be appreciated. Also thoughts on any FW800 - FW 400 hubs, etc. Of course the moment I purchased it, I read that Apple now delivers them with non-reflective screens. I'm used to this. RL

I watched the posted Guided Tour of the new iLife 08 software suite and I was struck again by the value of the Mac. I really don't know what software programs are bundled for free with most PC purchases and I have to admit that I also don't know how much can be accomplished with just the Microsoft software that ships with all PC's. I have a favor to ask of my Windows using friends --- would you look at the Guided Tour online and then let me know if a Windows based PC, out of the box, can this easily and elegantly accomplish all of these things. I know I have been accused of being a Mac bigot (or kinder, a Mac zealot) but I really feel that no other company, other than …

I'm curious as to how some of you are mounting computers on your carts. I would like to have my MacBookPro on my cart, but only if I am confident it's securely mounted. What solutions have you found for this?
