My powerbook logic board just took a crap. I have to make the decision to either send it out or do it myself. Has anyone in the group replaced their's before? If so, how difficult a job is it? The computer is a 12" G4 Powerbook. Thanks

Well it has started to happen. With all the attention that Apple has been getting lately the hackers are starting to turn there attention to the platform. Unfortunately I think they will find a mother-load of unprotected victims because most Mac users believe the myth that Macs are impervious to virus and Trojan attacks. Of course they aren't. Here's the story on the Trojan just discovered and starting to propagate. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/06/23/mac_trojan/ ----Courtney

This is a sound related query: My iBook G4 OSX 10.4.11 no longer makes the "TA-DA" sound at startup. Is this repaired by yet another preference trashing (the usual fix)? There does not seem to be a com.apple.startup in preferences, but there are several com.apple.LaunchServices-014503.csstore with different 4 and 5 digit numbers that I am a bit intimidated to trash.

This is Dell's version of the LG EA93 21:9 monitor. I actually like that it is sort of small vertically, as I can have clear line of site to my projector and speakers without a giant screen in the way. ProTools timeline will look good and still have real estate when I pull the clip bin out a bit for legibility. I'm thinking that even dual head would be cool, although perhaps stretching the peripheral viewing angle a bit too much - hmm... will try one first and see how it goes.

I've seen a couple of Bus Powered DVD+/-RW drives that support lightscribe disc labeling. You need to use Lightscribe compatible DVDs but this basically allows you to burn the disc, flip it over, and print your label on it. Sound like a neat trick, and a good way to cut out the middle man of making labels, or writing w/ a sharpie. Anyone use this?

I'm going crazy here... I've used a 7" Lilliput touchscreen monitor on my cart now for several years. I run Metacorder on a MacMini and I absolutely love it -- powerful, steady, small footprint... just what I need. Well, the 7" monitor is starting to have some intermittent problems so, long story short, I just replaced it with an 8" version -- same manufacturer, same mounting hardware, same remote, same wiring... pretty much identical to the 7"... I set it up and the touch function is all backwards... so I try to run my TouchKit Utility program to calibrate the monitor and nothing works -- I push the buttons and nothing happens... the only buttons that work are …

Has anyone had any experience with this? http://laptop.org/en/laptop/index.shtml It looks like a possible on-set utility computer. Not necessarily for BoomRecorder or other recording apps, but file transfer, data editing, web surfing/email, even billing. And there is quite an extensive community of developers and add-on merchants. Developers are running Fedora or Ubuntu on it with thumb drives. It is additionally sub-marketed as a hardware learning tool, i.e. there are sites that explain how to easily take the computer apart and repair it, and sites that explain how to use the Terminal to program and interact with the Sugar OS. Needless to say, the philanthro…

Hot off the presses: 13" MacBook is now called a MacBook Pro, costs less than previous MacBook, has SD Card slot and Firewire 800. The 13" MacBook is now called a MacBook Pro. Starts at $1,199. Cheaper than the MacBook it replaces. Ranges from $1,199 to $1,499 in standard configurations. 10:13 am At what point isn't this just a MacBook Pro? It can even expand to the same levels of RAM and HD as the MacBook Pros. The backlit keyboard is now standard in it as well. Also, FireWire 800. 10:12 am Updating the 13" MacBook today as well. Gets the new display, SD card slot and better battery life.

For those that do run windows on their macs via the various solutions available, are there spyware, virus, trojan horse, etc issues? Does this have to be dealt with, and if so, do you now need to run the appropriate utilities to keep your computer safe and secure?

My wife Jean (a set decorator) and I are each breaking down different scripts for our upcoming jobs and we thought of something we would like to be able to do with a PDF of a script. We would like to be able to assign a set to each scene so that once complete you could easily see that scenes 12, 17, 45, 47 and 80 are all in "Sam's apartment" and you could easily view just those pages of the script. Similar to the way you put photos into albums in iPhoto. Then you could just click on the Sam's Apartment album and view the scenes that take place there. Any ideas? Is this maybe a functionality of Final Draft? We use Apple computers. Thanks, R

I don't know if anyone else has used the Mac App Store (included in 10.6.7 and installed for you without asking) but I just used for the first time. I found an application called "Hype" which is a web page design and HTML5 creator and decided to download it and purchase. The "Hype" website launched the Mac App Store on my Mac, I made the purchase with my Apple ID and it was installed and up and running in about 45 seconds. The process was very quick, informative and did not do anything without telling me what it was doing. It has always been super easy to install programs on the Mac (certainly compared to the computers running the other operating system) but this was even…

A very Happy Christmas to all. I have recently become a Microsoft free zone and bought a previously enjoyed Macbook to go with my Mac Mini. I assumed I could playback DEVA DVD RAM disks in the Macbook, as I used to in my trusty Thinkpad and can in the Mac Mini, but I can't. Is this a hardware or a software issue? The new version of QuickTime included with Snow Leopard (called QuickTime Player X) is almost a complete overhaul of the previous version, from the look and feel of the application windows right down to the preferences menu (or lack thereof). If you were looking to change some options but don't know where to start, this Preference Pane can help enable or disable many of QuickTime's features. Megabyte Computing's QuickTime Player X Preference Pane 1.0 provides an interface to some QuickTime Player X preferences otherwise available only from the command line. It includes preferences for rounded corners, simultaneous recording, autoplay, display of closed captions and sub…

I'm starting to research touch screens for a possible Mac Mini / Metacorder setup. My biggest concern at the moment is the resolution of these touchscreens (I've been looking at Xenarc and Lilliput), even the larger Xenarc apparrently only support 640 x 480. Metacorder is designed for 1024 x 768, which completely fills the screen of my 12" laptop (at 800 x 640 MC goes off the screen and you can't use it). This Lilliput (http://www.digitalww.com/VGA_TM_810VGT.htm) says it supports that 1024 x 768, but it appears to be 800 x 600 natively. Would my screen be readable/useable? Is anyone here using a setup like this? Thanks, Brandon

Hey iMac users, I have an iMac from about 2007 that just started shutting itself down randomly. In the middle of normal operation it will just go black as if the power cord was yanked from the wall. Other electronics on the same surge protecting power strip continue to operate normally. After the crash pressing the power button starts up the iMac normally. No warning messages from the OS appeared either before or after the "crash". The only other x-factor is that this behavior just started since I moved to a new apartment and i'm suspicious that the electrical system in the house is old and maybe causing the protective circuits built into the iMac's PS…

Obama administration miffed at old White House PCs quote from from Cyrus Farivar It's well-known that Obama himself is a Mac fan, and not surprisingly, his campaign staff was largely powered by a fleet of Macs as well, but according to The Washington Post , the Obama team waltzed into the White House, only to find "computers outfitted with six-year-old versions of Microsoft software." Disappointing? You bet. Furthermore, "Laptops were scarce, assigned to only a few people in the West Wing. The team was left struggling to put closed captions on online videos." Here's to hoping that one of the elements of Obama's mantra of change will be getting rid of those ancient …

New iPhone app: "Sonoma Wire Works's FourTrack ($9.99, iPhone and 2G iPod Touch only) is a multitrack audio recorder with four tracks (record one while listening to the others), unlimited length, 16-bit/44.1KHz quality, calibrated meters, fade and pan, clipping lights, time line display, shuttle, Wi-Fi sync, and more" Probably just a toy. I haven't looked at it. - JW

Apple, describing it as a “core violationâ€ of worker safety, said that it had ordered the contractor…
