A very Happy Christmas to all. I have recently become a Microsoft free zone and bought a previously enjoyed Macbook to go with my Mac Mini. I assumed I could playback DEVA DVD RAM disks in the Macbook, as I used to in my trusty Thinkpad and can in the Mac Mini, but I can't. Is this a hardware or a software issue? I am posting this in the Mac section because it is Mac only software. For those who already have a good, easy way to re-size images (for posting here on this Group, for example) this will be of no interest. For those Mac users who have been looking for a really good software utility, I like Easy Crop a lot. You can set whatever size you want (really good for those of you who are trying to post images right out of your camera) and also limit the FILE size. I use this all the time for managing image files for the web, for emailing, etc. http://www.yellowmug.com/easycrop/ Regards, Jeff Wexler

This is one of the oddest most intriguing products I have seen ... and I really don't know exactly what one would do with it! Evidently it has been available for Windows PC for quite some time (so I wouldn't have known anything about it) but it is now available for the Mac. Could this be useful for controlling recording software on a Mac setup? Take a look: http://www.solitudenorthwest.com/

PC World's latest review of laptops has discovered the fastest laptop to run Microsoft's latest incarnation of Windows - Vista. The ironic antithesis of it all, the laptop happens to be a 17" 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro. The fastest Windows Vista notebook we've tested this year is a Mac. Try that again: The fastest Windows Vista notebook we've tested this year--or for that matter, ever--is a Mac. Not a Dell, not a Toshiba, not even an Alienware. The $2419 (plus the price of a copy of Windows Vista, of course) MacBook Pro's PC WorldBench 6 Beta 2 score of 88 beats Gateway's E-265M by a single point, but the MacBook's score is far more impressive simply because Apple …

O.K. iOS users, don't be hatin' on me, but... I'm curious if any Android users out there have any favorite tools/apps for Android based smartphones. Criteria: anywhere between "really useful" to "just fun" Here are a couple to get things started: - Sound Report Writer (Tyler Faison) - Speedy Spectrum Analyzer (Electron Chaos)

Has anyone used lockstep by figure 53 to slave the pt transport to Ltc? How reliable was it? Would it ever glitch and cause transport errors? I'm considering it as one possible solution, and I thought I'd get some user feedback before I buy it and try it out . Thanks for your thoughts.

Using a Macbook Pro that, of late, has started to have problems when transferring files to and from various drives. Frequently, a message will appear that says a file is in use. Then, when I hit okay, the progress bar won't go away even after hitting the "x," the drives can't be ejected, the Finder can't be quit and the computer can't be restarted except by manually shutting off by holding down the power button. Then, it takes several tries (plugging and unplugging) for the drives to be recognized even after repeated computer reboots. I use MacJanitor and have repaired permissions several times. I even completely re-installed the operating system (10.5.. Help! A.

In March I returned to the world of MAC after a few years with Windows!!! Mac mini adorns the desk now and has been a thing of beauty. But with the new year, time to purchase a financial software to keep track of my checking account, other accounts, just general stuff. Not used for billing, invoices, etc. iBank or QUICKEN ESSENTIALS for MAC seem to be the leaders... Comments??? Happy New Year... cleve

Mozilla has released Firefox 3 beta and it now looks exactly like Safari! I think that's great so the few times I actually have to use Firefox because of Safari incompatibilities, everything looks basically the same. For me, Firefox has never held any great attraction over Safari in terms of speed, ease of use and so forth. - Jeff Wexler

Report from various sources about failure rates and dissatisfaction with Flash (SSD) drives: Flash Drives Failing at Significant Rate, Study Finds March 19, 2008 9:00 AM Chris Barylick As cool as first generation technologies may be, there are also some drawbacks. According to Macworld UK, laptops with flash-based solid state drives are being returned at an alarming rate. The primary reasons cited are technical failures and performance shortcomings, as reported in a study released this week by brokerage firm Avian Securities, which covers the high-tech and aerospace industries. The report cites that an unnamed large manufacturer is seeing return rates as high as 2…

Has anyone had any experience with this? http://laptop.org/en/laptop/index.shtml It looks like a possible on-set utility computer. Not necessarily for BoomRecorder or other recording apps, but file transfer, data editing, web surfing/email, even billing. And there is quite an extensive community of developers and add-on merchants. Developers are running Fedora or Ubuntu on it with thumb drives. It is additionally sub-marketed as a hardware learning tool, i.e. there are sites that explain how to easily take the computer apart and repair it, and sites that explain how to use the Terminal to program and interact with the Sugar OS. Needless to say, the philanthro…

I need a new utility computer. This computer does email, office stuff, billing, taxes, but also does audio file transfers, upload/download etc.. This is not a computer for a big DAW (but maybe PTLE, Audacity etc), and not for multitrack recording-- not a location machine at all. So..... Intel-Mini? IMac? thanks Philip Perkins

What is the current consensus on the display for the Macbook Pro? I took a non-professional user to the Apple Store and got the opinion that the glossy display was sharper, as if the antiglare screen seemed to have an overlay on it. I received mixed reviews from a few DITs, though most seemed to prefer the glossy. A removable overlay is available, though it is apparently difficult to apply in a professional manner.

Well, it finally happened... I had a hard drive failure in my 27" iMac. I have been using computers for a very long time and this is a first, for me. I know the phrase regarding drives: "it's not a question if it fails but when" so I guess I have just been incredibly lucky. The good news: drive replaced, no charge (AppleCare) and everything was backed up by TimeMachine. I am now waiting for TimeMachine to do its thing --- close to 900 GB on a 1 TB drive being restored ("About 2 hours and 55 minutes remaining"). Let's hope it all goes well.

To those who know... My son wants to run some PC games on his MacBook Pro. Parallels seems to be the go to option, but it appears he must buy BOTH Parallels and Windows. I think we have an old Windows install disk from an old laptop, but it might be serial number specific and very outdated. Are there any other options? Can I buy "used" Parallels and Windows? Senator disclaimer... I have been to the Parallels website, and have done some searches of various forums, but I am asking this group of trustworthy friends and colleagues to see if someone here has specific and personal knowledge. Thanks, Robert

Stumbled upon this during my perusing of Gotham Sound’s used section: a Mac Mini modded by Gotham with Hirose power input. Interested how this came about and what kind of workflow it fit into.

Fascinating and illuminating article with some real insight into the history of FinalCut Pro. Written by someone who really knows the story. It is not a review of the new application, FinalCut Pro X but a reflection with an historical context of Apple's release of the new software. Quote from the article: "Remember, when FCP was released, Apple stock was at $11 and they were largely considered to be on their way out. FCP 1.0 was released only a little more than year after Michael Dell famously answered the question about what he would do were he in charge at Apple with, “What would I do? I’d shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders”. At that time,…
