Hello! I've had my Lacie Rugged decide to just not connect on several occasions on location recently, and even though I've got the recordings on my 788's internal drive which I then backup on my bigger drive at home, I'm paranoid and like to make as many copies as possible So, can anyone recommend a sturdy location hard drive instead of the Rugged? Cheers! Eren

Well, it finally happened... I had a hard drive failure in my 27" iMac. I have been using computers for a very long time and this is a first, for me. I know the phrase regarding drives: "it's not a question if it fails but when" so I guess I have just been incredibly lucky. The good news: drive replaced, no charge (AppleCare) and everything was backed up by TimeMachine. I am now waiting for TimeMachine to do its thing --- close to 900 GB on a 1 TB drive being restored ("About 2 hours and 55 minutes remaining"). Let's hope it all goes well.

Stumbled upon this during my perusing of Gotham Sound’s used section: a Mac Mini modded by Gotham with Hirose power input. Interested how this came about and what kind of workflow it fit into.

Interestingly enough, many have chosen NOT to update to Lion because Lion has broken all version of Quicken 2005 to 2007, the most commonly used software from Intuit. Intuit is still a sucky company, no doubt about that, but at least now there is a way to update to Lion and still run Quicken. from Mac Rumors site: Intuit Releases Lion-Compatible Quicken 2007 for Mac Thursday March 8, 2012 2:09 pm PST by Eric Slivka Last December, Intuit announced that it would be developing a version of its Quicken 2007 for Mac software compatible with OS X Lion, targeting "early spring" for a release. Quicken 2007 has remained a popular option for users of personal f…

Apple has officially announced announced that Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5 and Compressor 4 are available today on the Mac App Store. "Final Cut Pro X is the biggest advance in Pro video editing since the original Final Cut Pro," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "We have shown it to many of the world's best Pro editors, and their jaws have dropped." The newest version of Final Cut Pro offers features such as Magnetic Timeline that lets you edit on a flexible, trackless canvas; Content Auto-Analysis that categorizes your content upon import by shot type, media and people; and background rendering that allows you to …

Question for the hive mind: I've got a 3 year old MacBook Pro that I use for playback work. Pro Tools runs pretty much fine - but I've decided to upgrade the hard drive to an SSD and up the RAM because every now and then I get a hiccup with bigger sessions. I can't quite decide though if I should upgrade my OS (still on 10.9.5) to the latest, which probably means needed to upgrade my Pro Tools from v10 up to 11 or 12. Normally I'm pretty good with upgrading, but since I've largely stopped doing post work, I've not felt the need to always keep up with the upgrades. I suppose I'm now at the point where I simply can't decide...Do I upgrade the OS and PT software - or ju…

Just thought everyone here would be interested. I got a M1 Max 16" Macbook Pro when they were launched. Although at home I mostly use WiFi I got a Gigabit Ethernet adapter just in case. It's always useful to have one around, especially nowadays when you might need to use Dante or other Ethernet audio transport. TL;DR: Buy the Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter and the Thunderbolt 2 to Gigabit Ethernet while supplies last! There are other alternatives in the market (A Sonnet adapter using the same Broadcom chip as the Apple Thunderbult-GbE costs as much as $200), and out of curiosity I have ordered a D-Link adapter which is claimed to have …

Fascinating and illuminating article with some real insight into the history of FinalCut Pro. Written by someone who really knows the story. It is not a review of the new application, FinalCut Pro X but a reflection with an historical context of Apple's release of the new software. Quote from the article: "Remember, when FCP was released, Apple stock was at $11 and they were largely considered to be on their way out. FCP 1.0 was released only a little more than year after Michael Dell famously answered the question about what he would do were he in charge at Apple with, “What would I do? I’d shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders”. At that time,…

It seems like no matter what webpage I visit these days I have to click out of an annoying pop up ad or video that automatically starts streaming. I normally browse in Safari and have pop-ups blocked. Just wondering if there's a better way of blocking all the commercials. Any info is appreciated.

I'm going crazy here... I've used a 7" Lilliput touchscreen monitor on my cart now for several years. I run Metacorder on a MacMini and I absolutely love it -- powerful, steady, small footprint... just what I need. Well, the 7" monitor is starting to have some intermittent problems so, long story short, I just replaced it with an 8" version -- same manufacturer, same mounting hardware, same remote, same wiring... pretty much identical to the 7"... I set it up and the touch function is all backwards... so I try to run my TouchKit Utility program to calibrate the monitor and nothing works -- I push the buttons and nothing happens... the only buttons that work are …

There's an interesting war brewing between Apple and Adobe, as witnessed by this recent statement by Steve Jobs on Flash: http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/ Jobs makes some good points that they have to move away from proprietary systems like Flash for mobile devices like the iPhone and the iPad, which use low-power chips. But Adobe is howling mad, and a lot of industry pundits are weighing in about it: Engadget Gizmodo Fortune And this doesn't even touch on the recent stolen iPhone prototype debacle, which is one of the most bizarre tech stories of the past decade. Jason Calicanis weighs in on this in an excellent editorial at this link. …

Newbie in the house question and need help I need to setup for a location shoot which take place mostly inside a house for 3 weeks. Budget is low (of course) so I am thinking about computer recording so I can mix and have ISO tracks on file. Thinking using Soundcraft M8 mixer with my 003 racks with additional to all my wireless and one boom man. The boom man has his own 2 track SD system on the bag so I am not worry about him. Have any of you have this setup before and can you give me some opinions? Real cool Director and DOP, actually give me a nice space in the house for me to setup and time to do so. thank you,

I just read an article that has much the same perspective I was trying to say in my post regarding what "professional" means in our ever-changing, not always for the better, world of media creation, creativity, software and so forth. One statement quoted here says a lot: "When it comes down to it, Final Cut Pro X isn’t about alienating professionals: It’s about finding out just what a “professional” looks like in this day and age. That line has blurred tremendously in the last decade thanks to widely-available—and inexpensive!—personal technology. Filmmakers are putting together features for $11,000. TV crews have gone digital; and that’s not even covering the amoun…

I tried to connect my 744T to my PowerBook (running Leopard now) and I could not get the Hard Drive to mount on the Desktop. Courtney explained to me that with the new firmware I have to make a menu selection (Firewire connect) HDD+STOP to access Internal Hard Drive. This finally worked but mounting, unmounting and file transfer speed was very slow. I don't know if this is a Leopard (OS X 10.5.1) problem or something wrong with my 744T. I have now updated to v. 2.40 firmware and there seems to be some improvement. Anyone else having any of these problems? Regards, Jeff Wexler

Lion Reviews Are Out: 'Great Value', 'Shakes Things Up', 'Very Few Bugs' Wednesday July 20, 2011 12:13 pm PDT by Jordan Golson Now that Lion has been released, NDA's are lifted and reviews are starting to come in. Here are some choice excerpts: David Pogue - New York Times: In Mac OS X 10.7, known as Lion, Apple went with the “shake things up” philosophy. It follows an old Apple pattern: embrace what’s cool and progressive, and ruthlessly jettison what it considers antiquated. That’s great if you love stuff that’s cool and progressive, and not so great if you hate people moving your cheese... The Lion upgrade, in other words, is classic A…

Apparently also called "Thunderbolt 3" connectors. Has anyone used these with Thunderbolt 2 HDs? Should I wait for G Tech to make USB-C HDs or take the plunge on the Thunderbolt 2 drives? Seems dumb to have to use an adaptor for brand new stuff. Thanks! Dan Izen EDIT: Nevermind no one has Thunderbolt 3 and it might be a while... USB 3 seems like the fastest for now...
