I want to give a big thanks to Rob Stalder at Rastorder. Rob helped me configure myself a beautiful new SU cart, it holds everything I need it to, but it's small and light enough that I can maneuver stairs myself, and it will fit into the tiny New England doorways that are all too common on location. If you're considering Rastorder, you won't be disappointed. Thanks Rob!

I found this picture in a book of production stills from the Seven Year Itch. Any idea what this microphone configuration may be? It seems unlikely, but: Decca tree?

I am so in the habit of saying that my first TV show was Hee Haw, I forgot about one that actually came before called "The Carl Tipton Show", shot in the same studio in Nashville (WLAC). We did six 30-minute shows every Saturday morning between 8am and noon, to air on the following Monday through Saturday. After a couple hundred of these shows, we learned our way around a bluegrass band pretty well. The staff was so determined to make our lunch time that we all but refused to cut. The shows below aired as you see them. Besides the training grounds in the 70s for Pat Sajak, Opra Winfrey, James Brown, and myself, a very successful video editor, Terry Climer, got his sta…

This is quite a fantastic look at Star Wars - A New Hope. A ton of original audio, compared to final film audio. A great deal of behind the scenes and commentary from the cast and crew. The best I have seen for any film. fantastic and well worth the 2 hours and 20 minutes.

I have found a light and small solution for booming wireless with my TRX 900 and Schoeps CMIT. The 48V supply has been modified as it didn`t work with Schoeps in a previous version. Still bit more noisy than hardwired and not as open and rich like on cable but good for the moments when I have to go wireless ... more detailed: http://www.jwsound.net/SMF/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=1295.0;attach=454 Matthias

Wearing one of these nostalgic 80s koala bear mic makes who's ever voice sound Australian. Joke of course. Here is a sanken cos11 hidden in a koala bear clip. Had to go this route because of some super noisy necklace and dress.

Wolf pointed this one out. It's a great picture of a Fisher Boom sitting in the wide open spaces of the Nevada Desert. The girl is Monroe. The co-star is Gable. The movie is "The Misfits" 1961.

One of the actors on our show models the new double cub rig. I told him I had a new mic for him, and show him this. He laughed and said it was perfect for the scene. All in good fun.

http://www.vimeo.com/tjockishjartafilm/impaktor This is an app called Impaktor, which seems to convert audio impulses from the onboard mic to midi signals that trigger a synth. Totally addictive! Check it out, if you're into music making on the fly. Cheers!

http://www.buzzfeed.com/mjs538/awesome-behind-scenes-photos-from-horror-movies There are several sound related photos in here. Like the "barney" idea, (or is that a coat rack?) in the first The Shining photo (#3), The use of two cameras in The Shining (#18), and I've said it before, an amazing sounding movie considering all the obstacles sound had to deal with, and the sound of the wires back in 1980. The Halloween Boom mic and mount (#19), yikes! After that, just some great photos! I see the dolly (#28), in The Omen (a childhood fav), has not changed much over the years as much as camera and sound has! I also had no idea the gremlins were large puppets (#22). (#1…

I was looking at some photos today and felt I should share my experience using Zaxcom's ZaxNet on the Lifetime movie, “Blue Lagoon: The Awakening.” I have been using Zaxcom gear on all of my projects for a couple years now and not long ago I started taking advantage of the benefits that ZaxNet provides. This project was filmed in March 2012. During my first conversation with the post department for this movie, I was told that they would be providing me with four timecode lock-it boxes (2 for cameras, 1 for my recorder, & 1 backup). I was able to talk them into letting me use my Zaxcom ERX1TCDs on the cameras with ZaxNet providing timecode from my recorder. Origin…

Slideshow I did for CAS Awards Show 2011 where I was honored with the Career Achievement Award and Taylor Hackford was awarded the CAS Filmmaker Award. I love these pictures my wife Carol took, that's why I am putting this up, Taylor's long-winded "performance" at the Awards Show, not so much.
