Do you keep them (or something similar) at hand in your kit or generally, always within reach? Wear them at concerts regardless of sticking out in a crowd?

A good friend of mine shoots video for a company that promotes rock themed cruises. Think "Rock Boat", but not that company. He bought a 5D to do this, and wanted to know how to get good audio from a boom mic into the camera. Considering the conditions, I immediately told him he should get a MixPre. He stated the obvious players, juicedLink, and Beachtek. Reading me reviews on how great these are(yuk). I told him he will have problems with either one of those, and if he insisted on using them, then he should think about double system sound and sync it all via Pluraleyes. Being he's a one man band, this setup would take some extra effort on his part. I had him buy a Zoom H…

For awhile I was using a modified baby stroller as a sound cart (seen here) and recently I decided it was time for an upgrade. I liked the idea of a two-module sound cart, much like the RastOrder SU, so I built my own using the 80/20® framing system. I purchased the Chindha recorder brackets first, then designed the top module around that. I then built the base module from the measurements of the top module. I made it wide enough so I can add rack rails in the future if I need to. The top module connects to the base module with four T-knob screws. I purchased a 3' lon…

I thought this picture was lost but today I found it in a box in the attic. This is from "9 to 5" that Don, Crew and I did in 1980. (I am sure someone will notice the long microphone ... you know it's not the size that matters ... hopefully it was the right mic for the scene). - Jeff Wexler

This was on "The Postman Always Rings Twice", 1981 which Art Rochester mixed and Rick Thornton was the boom operator. Doing this scene in the rain, an improvised protective cover for the Rycote windscreen was built from hogs hair. The hogs hair covering works to disipate the water hitting the mic and thereby lessening the noise of the rain on the mic (but eventually the water passes through and ges through the Rycote and to the mic).

A large scale commercial shoot I recently serviced. "We need 10 men on radio mikes, two boom operators, all on discrete tracks, plus a radio fed Anchor bull horn for the 1st AD" plus I put the clapper loader on a radio for convenience, plus 12 radio headphones for director, agency, clients. Hence 2 x HHB recorders, my 8 channel Sonosax SX-S. For a rushes bash mix, my SQN 4S into a Sound Devices 702T jammed to the HHB's (all dialogue on Track 1 and clapper loader on Track 2) A whole day to plan the RF's and rig it all and two days shooting. The invoice was a gem!!!!!!!! Regards mike www.mikewestgatesound.co.nz

I have been recently thinking about buying a pelican case for my gear. But i was walking through a antique store the other day and i stumbled over this case. I instantly fell in love with it, and then with looking at it i decided that it would be perfect to use to hold my equipment. It folds open as you can see in the images i attached and has a spot where i put some foam to hold my wireless. I made some quick dividers for the one side and added some extra foam for padding in some spots. I may change it but this works for now. As a plus, inside of the case when i bought it, was filled with boxed vacuum tubes, all sizes. Which was pretty cool. …

Desert Dawg Adventure Blawg (http://desertdawg.acekvale.com/) Uploaded by Stefan Hunt April 20, 2016 Ace Kvale turned 60 last fall, and to celebrate, he planned a 60-day, off-trail backpacking trip around Utah's Canyon Country, leaving from his front door. He had a dozen friends join him for different sections of the trip, and one friend who joined him for the whole thing: his blue heeler, 10-year-old Genghis Khan aka 'Desert Dog'. Covering over 400 miles on their journey presented it's challenges but the special relationship between Ace and Genghis proved most powerful.

Garrett Brown (inventor of the Steadicam and a really great guy) posted this picture of an early walking machine. Pretty cool. This could be a real energy saver and give you a little bit of a workout. Might be a little difficult to get to location loaded up with sound equipment. - Jeff Wexler

I found this randomly and thought some of you guys and gals might find it interesting. Two what I assume are Fisher booms covering a ton of action. If you watch closely you can see on the bottom left a long shotgun aiming away covering the dancers. Fantastic real Flamenco!

Oh how the memories come back, gripping and lighting, rigging this or that, makeshift contraptions; besides the usual set of wrenches, this tool made life easier.

I was looking at some photos today and felt I should share my experience using Zaxcom's ZaxNet on the Lifetime movie, “Blue Lagoon: The Awakening.” I have been using Zaxcom gear on all of my projects for a couple years now and not long ago I started taking advantage of the benefits that ZaxNet provides. This project was filmed in March 2012. During my first conversation with the post department for this movie, I was told that they would be providing me with four timecode lock-it boxes (2 for cameras, 1 for my recorder, & 1 backup). I was able to talk them into letting me use my Zaxcom ERX1TCDs on the cameras with ZaxNet providing timecode from my recorder. Origin…

Field Day is held every year,June26th-27th across North America. It gives hams and ham clubs a chance to try their skills under emergency situtations, ( no hydro power) equipment can only be powered by generators, battery or solar. In the United States, it is typically the largest single emergency preparedness exercise in the country, with over 30,000 operators participating each year. A friend gave me a call the night before and asked if I would come over with my DSLR and get some shots, so I had very little time to plan out how I would shoot the event. So I decided I would shoot it doc. style, no retakes,no back to ones,no going again, just go with the flow. In the day ti…

This is the cart from our latest production. The Cooper was out on another feature so we had to build something with better pre-amps than the 788 itself for the two boom-mikes. So we took our old Nagra and used it as a pre-amp for the boom-poles and lined it to the 788. It was a crazy build, but the Nagra delivered!

Here we are on a VISA spot in Vacaville CA yesterday, Frances Nkara--my redoubtable boom op and me. Got to meet fellow JWSound poster Phil Talsky @ this location. Low key day after we retuned all the radios out of the way of Sacto TV and weird military RF. Philip Perkins
