A Discussion on the Future of Wireless Microphone Use It's recently been announced that wireless broadcast frequencies will soon be open to white space devices, this makes the future of wireless microphone use nothing like what has come before. Interference from computer-based devices utilizing white space spectra will greatly diminish the range and reliability of today’s analog FM wireless microphones. These new users will be broadcasting wide band digital data that will appear to analog FM wireless as an increased noise floor. While it will not decode into audio, it will limit the usable range of wireless microphones. The problem is that the number of new users…

If you don't know me already, I'm the DP who invented the Jokerbox. I've been a shooter for over twenty years. And right there beside me, through thick and thin, has been the sound man. (or woman) So recently, I designed a Jokerbox bundle thats just right for my brothers and sisters of the sound wave. I took an inventory of the stuff my sound techs were lugging around. I took input about how they would like to use the Jokerbox. (sometimes a lot of input) And what I came up with is the "Jokerbox Audio Bundle". For example, I designed a full size tray that utilizes the entire top level of the Jokerbox. This allows you to move the tray to the top of the cart to keep the ite…

I just heard from Philippe at Cinela that he is not able to make it to NAB this year but has graciously donated a Pianissimo windscreen for the RAMPS/JWSOUND Party Tuesday night. We will miss Philippe but will be quite pleased if I win a beautiful Cinela Pianissimo!

During the early years of using my brand new Sonosax SX-8 I suffered from sticky faders. Now removing faders, taking them apart, cleaning with dry fluon and lubing the slider rod with the correct material and putting them back is quite a lengthy task. I contacted P&G directly and they sent some sample bushes to solve the problem. Great it was the perfect solution! So I asked to buy some more and was told by P&G that as I had faders that were were not using these bushes that therefore I could not purchase them!!! I replied saying that you sent them to me a a solution and it worked.! No go, so I contacted the Australian rep and got them that way. Does any o…

TIG Timecode Generator Durability Test I love durability tests and think they are so much fun. So we decided to do a video showing the TIG (timecode generator) being driven over by a truck and dropped off the back. It survived very well (especially considering we drove over it about 20 times and dropped it over 30.) So here's a TIG and a truck: https://plus.google.com/112281036772159173979/posts Laurie 480-292-9060 lauriew@mozegear.com www.mozegear.com

I've been absent from the forum for a couple of years as I pursued a career in industrial design. Hello again! I'll be selling my gear pretty soon, but in the meantime, I can announce the first new Abetek product in quite some time. I was able to partner with my company in a joint venture to bring this out. For everyone who uses a lot of NiMH AAs, this is for you. On many shoots I was using at least two racks of 12 AAs per day. At the end of the day, unloading all the batteries to be charged, and reloading them the next day, was a hassle. So I can now present to you, my baby, the RadCad. It pretty much does what it says on the ti…

Hey all, just wanted to let you know my button-down lav mounts are now available at Pro Sound. You can get them in black or white for the COS-11, DPA 4060 series, or B6. http://www.pro-sound.com/p/SABEMICMOUNT.html I made these to deal with a really awful work shirt on a show I've been on this summer. Starchy, crackly and dense, it responded weakly to some of my favorite tricks but was still a pain. I had the idea to brute-force a solution that would give the mic some clearance and also create a dead space in the shirt, movement-wise. I tried a couple of different materials and this is the result. The mounts are very flexible, vibration-absorbent, and strong - they…

This past weekend was AES in San Francisco. Over the years SD has been exhibiting at the show, we often left thinking that it was less and less relevant from a production sound perspective. NAB has always been the major U.S. show and AES tangentially hit on production sound. In fact, last year we sat out the NY show as an experiment. I have to say that this year seemed to be a different, and better type of show. It was also better because it was 3 days. While the show felt smaller than even last year's AES, the users we spoke with in San Francisco were quite confident in their work, looking forward to new projects and changes in tech and workflow. People didn't seem as…
