STAMP OUT "MIT OUT SOUND!" A popular (presumed to be mythical) origin theory is that MOS stands for broken-English "Mit out sound", that is, "Without sound" as a 1920s German-émigré director might have said it. According to this theory, a German director, recently transplanted to Hollywood (probably Ernst Lubitsch, but possibly Fritz Lang), was asked by a script supervisor how he would like to shoot the next scene of the day. The director responded "Mit out Sprechen!", and so this was noted as a joke on the production reports and the camera slates for the shot. In The Screenwriter's Bible, David Trottier credits the term to Austrian director Erich von Stroheim…

The SPDR is Lectrosonics’ response to customer demand for a small, lightweight dual channel recorder for use on virtual reality sound captures or as a backup recorder for bag systems in the field. The SPDR allows capture of the full stereo audio of an extreme sport participant, in-car scenes, plant mics, or in situations where a wireless system isn’t practical. When used in conjunction with a small mixer and the SRC receiver, the SPDR makes for a lightweight interview setup that provides full redundancy - all fitting into a small fanny pack. For compatibility with a wider range of memory cards while retaining high reliability, the SPDR features a deep write buffer. …

Fred from New Zealand has just designed & had made a new 2 part cover for his VK cart. It allows the modules to be separated with the cover on. What can I say - this cover easily upstages the cart it was made for - congratulations Fred. While you are admiring the cover, take a look at his backyard - envy. envy.envy. Rob Stalder

Here we are. Pianissimo is ready for shipping ! Many demo units all around ! Ask your dealer. Lightweight world champion, First of all, Pianissimo is a bet for new generations of "shortenned" short shotguns like DPA 4017B/C, Sennheiser MKH8060, Sanken CS1.... and awaited. Short body end microphones are generally difficult to mount with a (enough flexible) indoor suspension, but will find the perfect place in Pianissimo ! http://vimeopro.com/ipstv/ips-tv-at-ibc-2014/video/106258092 More infos: http://www.cinela.fr/pianissimo.php?language=en Download link for AES paper, presented at AES 2009 in Munich : "Handling Noise Analysis in Large Cavity Microphone W…

Hello everyone, I am planning a major rework of the user interface of Boom Recorder. How does one feel about me separating the tape transport, metadata and meter bridge into three windows. I want to do this, so I can make Boom Recorder into a video recorder as well. It would be more logical to have a meter bridge and a video window at the same time. But not everyone needs a meter bridge, not everyone needs a video window, and some need both. I've been talking to a producer about what is happening on the set with metadata. Especially interesting is that, on a low budget film at least, the script supervisor already is doing all the metadata reporting including wha…

Word seems to be traveling fast, so I’ll go ahead and announce that Coffey Sound was purchased today, and is now a Trew Audio company. For the last several years, Coffey Sound has been owned by Telecorp, which also owned media related companies primarily involved with postproduction and unscripted (reality) television. As many here on the JWSound group can understand, a company with a niche as specific as sound for film and video production serves the industry best when driven first by a love and understanding of the craft and those who work in it, with the pursuit of profit being a necessary but distant second. With today’s purchase, this Los Angeles business will …

The PIX 260i has collectively made many of us here prematurely gray, especially Paul Isaacs...but it is the answer to that question we hear a lot from customers, "What is next from Sound Devices?" Way back at last year's NAB, we previewed the PIX 260. Between now and last April, the product has evolved quite a bit. Today, we began (slowly) sending out PIX 260i units to resellers worldwide. Is this a production sound product? It may be...it may not be. That is up to you to determine. It does introduce several technologies that we believe are relevant for both video and audio production, technologies such as: audio over Dante - networked audio has been around…

Please let me introduce yout to the newest member of the Ambient Clockit Network family: First of all, it has Clockit Time Code generator of course and is made out of machined aluminum. Except for the sync signal output, it comprises the full functionality of its big brother, including ACN (Ambient Clockit Network) support, metadata transfer and logging. This network capabilities also allow the Tiny Lockit to be a fully functional Timecode Transceiver. Therefor it is combining the stability of an Ambient Clockit Generator with the flexibility of a wireless TC system but without the fear of dropouts. In addition it also has most features of the ALL601, such …

We have just posted the Zaxcom QRX100 page on our web site. http://www.zaxcom.com/qrx.htm There is a lot of detailed information on this new 4 channel ENG receiver, its IFB return channel and sync generator options. In the photos page is a shot of the unit in its Zaxcom camera holder. You will notice a group of 12 LEDs (3 per channel) located on the side of the unit. These will clearly indicate from a great distance that audio is being received by the QRX100 on each of its 4 channels. As most ENG receivers face the sky when in use it seemed logical to position the LEDs in a position that could be easily seen when in the camera mount. The unit can be reversed in the…

Hello everyone, I am planning on releasing Boom Recorder version 6 this weekend, after doing some test to see if everything works as expected and seem to be stable using my system. The new version will include a couple of new time sources, including time-of-day, which a lot of people seem to be waiting for (weird how such a request come from multiple customers at the same time). An other feature was created by cleaning up some of the ring buffer code, Boom Recorder will now keep the pre record buffer, even during playback. This cleanup also solves some issues with the recording indicator, which sometimes was flickering off and on during recording, which does not instil…
