Are there any sound recordists here relying specifically on recording to computer only without running an external backup recorder?

Is there any bleed of time code onto another track if I am constantly jamming Boom Recorder? Should I skip a track between the time code and audio channel just in case?

Hi everyone, I have a question about upgrading Metacorder to Intel machines. Is version 1.5 the first universal binary release? I thought there another previous release that was universal binary... 1.3 ? 1.2 has been working great on the PPC machine... thanks, J

I recently did a shoot with the boom recorder software, and upon listening to it after the shoot, it sounds all messed up. There is some sort of echo, and all kinds of clicking that is very much like static, but there was none of this going into the board. Could it be a sample rate issue? Can anything be done about it? I just looked at my settings, and one of them that had always been set at 48K was set at 44.1K, so this is what leads me to believe that it had been changed. I'm sure I'm going to hear about this soon, so I'd like to see if anyone has come across this before? I've done a dozen or so shoots with this software with no problems, so this is a new one on me. …

I don't know if my original post on this topic went thru or not. Apologies for the repeat if it did. This is the setup for a highly unstructured multicam video shoot at a new age groove-and-drum-fest for a new PBS doc. 20+ drummers (lost count) spelled by ukelele and guitar songs. A drum-wearing music director w/ a wireless lav. Tiny space, lots of audience participation, singing, clapping and astonishingly loud drumming. Philip Perkins

Preparing a PC to record.

Here's the setup: Presonus preamp direct into a Digigram VX440 into my laptop (1.8ghz AMD, 512mb ram) using Cubase SX as a recorder. Three tracks at 44.1k/24bit. When I played back the recording, I had obviously run out of something; RAM, buffer, or CPU speed. Lots of errors. I am upgrading to a stick of 1g RAM which may take care of all the issues. Also probably going to record at 16bit next time. My question is, how do those who do this regularly (and maybe on critical things unlike my failed recording, thank God!) prepare your computer to record. When I start up my PC, and since it is not strickly dedicated to recording, many apps launch and probably run in th…

01v96 USB issues...

Hello all, I was running studio manager software between an IbookG4 and the 01v96 and everything was working well... I needed to do a bit of spring cleaning and decided to upgrade the os on my G4 to Tiger. My install was an erase and start from scratch... Everything else seems to work fine and the software and files I decided to transfer (from dvd backups) work well. The only issue at this point is after downloading Yamaha's Driver, Studio Mgr Software, and editor... I cannot get the 'puter to see the board on the USB bus. I have queried the 01v96yahoo group and tried a few hours (3498.4) of BS getting them to talk, so far no luck... I am wondering if anyone is…

Not sure if this is the right area to post in but I'm looking for info on the AKAI LPD8 midi controller http://www.akaipro.com/lpd8 If someone could point me in the direction on "how to map midi controllers to wave files" would be great. What I'm trying to do is turn this controller (and my Mac Book Pro) into a "360 Shortcut". I would like to assign wave files to the pads to play them as sound effects or even music for playback situations on set. I have Pro Tools but have never dealt with the midi side of things. Thanks Andy

Boom Recorder saves the audio file to disk when recording. But if the computer crashes during the recording, then the header of the audio file is not complete yet and you will not be able to use the file. Use BR File Fixer to rescue these files. It looks at the size of the file on disk, then checks some information in the header that was written and then corrects the header. You can find it at: http://www.vosgames.nl/downloads/

Hello everyone, I finally finished the new preferences architecture in Boom Recorder. Functionally this version is not different, but some of the preferences have moved between the tabs of the preferences window. I really wanted to finish this because I have some plans for changing how time and pull up / pull down works. Although I had the old and new preferences side by side for comparison and I have tested it carefully this is quite a big change. Be careful before going into production with this version, but I would love if you can try it out. Cheers, Take

For some years I've used the BWF Timecoder mac application by One-N Corp to create audio timecode tracks in ProTools to use in on-set playback. It was much easier than the various hardware methods of creating a recorded timecode track to match session timecode. This audio file could be re-imported into the session for easy play-out to a slate without needing Sync hardware on set. Unfortunately this software hasn't been updated for quite a while and won't even install on Mac's running Mountain Lion or Mavericks. Is anyone here aware of something current for mac, that does the same job? cheers, nick

Hello, Yesterday I had my first day on the job working with Metacorder on a fast paced second unit TV gig. A Sound Devices 744T handles Master Timecode, Word Clock for a Yamaha 01V96 v2, & backup recording. A Lacie Rugged 500GB HD is the "Primary Record Drive" for Metacorder, while a Sound Devices XL-DVDRAM is selected as "Background Mirror". A second XL-DVDRAM is connected to the 744T. My explanation/questions: 1. While on a quick location move that requires me to strap into a truck I'd like to shut down the cart, but leave my MacBook in sleep mode so I can start back up quickly with a recognized DVD Ram "Background Mirror" available. Is this Possible…

Would the Mbox 2 micro and the bundled software (Pro-Tools 8/48 channels/48kHz/24 bit) be a good option for track laying? I'm not looking for any record-in options as all dialogue and fx are pre-recorded and this isn't something that I'd be using everyday, but the price for it is quite good and it's a unit that I can pick quite easily from retailers here. The last time that I used Pro-Tools was about 5 years ago so it's amazing to see something this small offering what it does. Any thoughts from users appreciated Damien

Hey all, I got an email from post and one of my BR poly files is bad. I checked my copies and it is very strange. The file has one frame of audio, is 0:00 long (one frame) - but the file is three hundred something megs, which is correct for it's length (Or the length it is supposed to be). I've had similar problems before (never with Boom Recorder) and I've used soundhack to fix the header, but it won't work this time. Any thoughts? I'm guessing it's just simply a bad file, but if anyone has encountered this issue and found a fix (or that there isn't one) please help. I'm looking around but not seeing anything that matches my situation :-/ Thanks!

I am not sure about this connector. It looks like it is not very reliable to work with live audio. My power adapter seems to cut-in-and-out with the connector on my MacBook. Does anyone have any experience, or a solution?

I've done a great deal of audio recording on computers, on location mostly on a 12" Powerbook G4 w/ Metacorder. That won't be happening anymore because that computer was stolen off my sound cart on a job today. My other computer is a 1 year old MacBook 13" 2.16 Core Duo, and that is about to be hosed off and made into my audio computer. Any one have any caveats about using this model (or MacBooks in general) w/ Meta or Boom recorder? thanks Philip Perkins

I'm using a laptop for sync playback for music videos with the song in mono on channel one and timecode on channel two. I've been using Windows 98se and playing back with Sound Forge. The output comes from the computer's built-in headphones mini-jack. The setup works really well for this application. The computer is a ThinkPad with a 366mHz processor. I recently added a second ThinkPad as a backup. (Older laptops are dirt cheap -- ain't it great!) So, on the second laptop I decided to install a newer operating system only to discover something alarming. With Windows 2000 or Windows XP, there is a great deal of crosstalk between channels. Using either of these…

Hi Folks, I finally finished cutting together the video I shot of RME's Jeff Petersen at NAB. There's a lot of interesting topics that he discusses, including: why RME chose external PCIe instead of Thunderbolt a new standard for MADI over Ethernet why RME feels MADI is inherently more stable than DANTE 12V DC powered MADI interface with DSP Here's the link: I hope it's ok to post this here and not the Manufacturers and Dealers forum - it just seems more on-target in this forum. I had a great Hoodman "Eclipse" sun hood for my old Powerbook, but it is too small to fit the MacBook I use now. Hoodman doesn't seem to be stocking their Mac hoods anymore, and told me they might not be making them for computers in the future. (All the ones on their site--out of stock--were for G4 laptops.) I found this hood from Europe: http://www.theithelper.com/laptopshade.htm, anyone know it? Another suggestion? The MacBook screen is really not as bright as my Powerbook's screen was, so I do need help with it outside. Philip Perkins

I have an aging Mackie Onyx 1620 in my cart, with a FW card, which connects to a MacBook Pro. It has served me well for a few years, but I'm having issues with a few mute and solo buttons. I've taken it in for service, but the issues persist. Chances are, it would cost close to what it's worth now ($450) to have those buttons repaired/replaced, so I'm looking for a board to replace it. I need 8-12 input channels, at least two submixes or aux outputs and talkback, as well as FW or USB connectivity for Boom Recorder. I've looked at and considered the following mixers: Presonus StudioLive 16.4.2 AI Allen & Heath QU-16 Yamaha LS9-16 (not sure it has ta…
