The Motu Traveler has 8 analogue inputs and an additional 4 digital inputs SPDIF and AES. So I tried using my SD744T to provide 4 analogue to digital conversions to feed both the SPDIF and AES Motu digital inputs in an attempt to have 12 analogue inputs. To my suprise the 744T fed both the SPDIF and the AES inputs on the Motu successfully and it did not seem to matter whether the digital out setting on the 744T was set to domestic or professional, it still worked. I ran a test with claps and zoomed in to the waveforms and was also suprised to see that there did not appear to be any delay on the digital ins (provided by the 744) alongside the analogue ins of the Motu. …

Hi, How many of us here actually use a HUI (Mackie/Euphonix/Tascam) together with the MBP and Metacorder with several interfaces available in the market? My Plan :- 1) MBP with SSD in the express card slot as the recording media of choice. Dailies on DVD-R 2) Metacorder with MHlab 2882+ and a Mackie HUI mod for 12V. 3) 702T as Backup and TC, Car scene, long walk and talk...........etc etc 4) Com line will be giving up 1 analog input on the MHlab 2882 and do some aux routing with the MIO software. Will like to hear some feed back on my setup, and also some idea on using a HUI on set. Alan Chong

Samsung Announces Mass-Production of 256 GB of Solid State Drive for Notebooks Wednesday night, electronics manufacturer Samsung announced that the company has started production of its 256GB Flash SSD. According to Electronista, the 2.5" solid-state notebook drive offers a sequential read speed of 220MB per second but faster sequential write speeds and records data at 200MB per second. The company has estimated that the unit can write 250GB of videos in about 21 minutes versus 70 minutes on a conventional 7,200RPM rotating disk and should be able to launch apps about 10 times faster.

I've done a great deal of audio recording on computers, on location mostly on a 12" Powerbook G4 w/ Metacorder. That won't be happening anymore because that computer was stolen off my sound cart on a job today. My other computer is a 1 year old MacBook 13" 2.16 Core Duo, and that is about to be hosed off and made into my audio computer. Any one have any caveats about using this model (or MacBooks in general) w/ Meta or Boom recorder? thanks Philip Perkins

In my increasingly desperate attempts to get yet more inputs for my under-powered Metacorder rig (G4 1.5 GHz), I hit on the idea of adding inputs via the USB2 port, since I really can't bog the FW (400) bus any more than I am already. I've done a test that looks good adding 2 tracks from a USB interface to the rig I already had (22 tracks, thus 24 tracks in record 24/48), and am reticent to go farther (until I'm even MORE desperate, that is)--the test is 90 min continuous record. Has anyone tried using combos of FW and USB2 input devices with Metacorder or Boom Recorder or anything else on a Mac laptop? Yes, I know I need a new computer. Tell my family and loan of…

Someone posted a link a while back to a really nifty utility that allows one to preview and move .wav files in a mac. I seem to remember that it also allowed one to attatch the .wav to an email as an mp3 and send it off to wherever. The company wot made it had a neat little video that showed you how to use it. BUT - I have lost the details. Can anyone remember what it was, please? Kindest regards, Simon B

If I close the program and or eject the hard drives I am unable to successfully relaunch BR without creating new directories? The program worked flawlessly during the 30 day trial but since purchase this has happened repeatedly...at least 4 times this past week. Restarting Macbook pro does not factor. The only workaround is starting BR with drives undocked then creating new folders after the drives are reinstalled. Not optimal to do for just a lunch break Genie shutdown, etc I'm mirroring using 1 FW500GB and 1 USB250GB with BR 7.22 / 2G RAM Again, for a 18 day shoot during trial period seamless on/off cycling Any other experiences or fixes? Please advise

Hi All, Has anyone tried this relatively new Yamaha unit as a Mixer / Interface for Boom Recorder or Metacorder? It looks to me to have a lot more FW i/O options than the Onyx units - you can route individual tracks back to the mixer channels for playback / remix, plus 6 monitor channels. Yamaha claim the 8 mic preamps are a great improvement on those in the 01V/96 and DM2000. cheers, nick

New product from MOTU: UltraLite MK3 MOTU UltraLite MK3 I am not sure what has changed from the original UltraLite. If I remember, what was missing from the first UltraLite was no facility for external clocking. - Jeff Wexler

I read about Take's work on Mirage recorder but was wondering about just getting a video monitor feed in BR and not worry about recording it. The PSC Miranda prototype http://www.professionalsound.com/Catalog/miranda%20cart%20closeup.htm has a cool screen layout, is there a way to incorporate video monitoring in BR without hogging resources? And/or are there any progs being used to monitor on the mac? Just trying to shrink the cart whenever possible

Since my show is on it's scheduled hiatus, which of course is tied in to the possible SAG strike, I have some extra time on my hands. I explored the Audiease site and two of it's plug-ins called "Altiverb 6" and "Speakerphone". What I am impressed with is the incredible range of choices for manipulating sounds wether it is for Film/TV Final sound mixing or music production. These plug-ins seamlessly integrate with Pro-Tools. "Speakerphone" can process sounds into hundreds of possible speakers, rooms and environments. Walter Murch used to do this in a practical way. He called it "worldization", simply put he would output a source through different speakers and re-re…

Adobe has announced new version of Soundbooth. From Macworld site: "Last year when Adobe jumped into the Macintosh-audio editing business with its release of the Intel-only Soundbooth CS3 (), it did so with something less than both feet. Designed for those who didn’t require (or wouldn’t comprehend) a full-blown digital audio workstation (DAW) application, Soundbooth erred on the side of ease-of-use. It offered an intuitive interface, solid noise filtering, and a handy AutoCompose feature for generating customized background music. But it lacked the kind of more-advanced features—multitrack editing and the ability to place more than one AutoComposed score in a pr…

I just got a Fireface 400 and was wondering from experienced users about the clock's accuracy. Is it good enough to jam to a timecode slate every 4 hours or would I still need to get a better timecode source elsewhere. I used a MOTU Traveler and that clock is totally unreliable. I also tried a TC Konnekt 24D before and that clock seems relatively accurate. But the drivers plagued with issues.

Hey all, I was trying to import a 3.73 GB .wav file (24/48k) into Protools LE 7.3 but for some reason PT LE was not letting me. Is there some file size limit for importing audio? Thanks, Jason

A new way to mix: This is a bit long but worthwhile read to discuss. Here’s the scenario. I walked into Gotham Sound and talked to Peter Schneider. My needs for an upcoming show were to be able to record dialogue and be able to do up to 16 tracks for music on a lower budget. I was not able to afford high end ie $$$ like the Deva, Sonosax, Cooper etc, and I was rather leery about going the Mackie route. Peter sums the system up in an email he had sent( he gave me permission to post it) I think that the control surface is the future for location "cart" mixing. The use of Lemur on location was the first attempt at that, and resulted in http://www.lectrosonic…

I was wondering if anyone here has had a chance to work with the latest MOTU 828mk3 FW interface? I need an affordable 8-channel A/D converter only (don't need mic pre-amps) and this looks pretty good. In particular I am interested in using it in location recording instead of a Traveler (slightly cheaper and I understand it is not capable of battery operation). 1. What should I use for a timecode source in long takes for video sync? 2. Thinking of purchasing Boom Recorder also, so how would I set the FW interface for a stable timebase? Mark Calice

Without meaning to, I topped my Metacorder "time-in-record" record last night at an HBO multicam shoot (SF Opera House, "Youth Speaks Poetry Slam" finals). 16 tr 24/48: 2 hrs 40 min. I didn't really want files that big but at the show start/roll-everything time there was still a line of people waiting to get in that ran all the way around the block, so people kept popping on stage and almost starting the show, riffing--you know the scene. All went well except for a DJ who decided to bust his sound-check feed levels by about 30db when the show started--the PA guy and I scrambled for the first few minutes but things settled down after that. The SF Opera House has a Scho…

Hi there, does the traveler handle 8 inputs with line level (+4dB) or are the s.c. instrument inputs not capable for that high level? Thanks, Matt

curious if anyone is using this and/or know if its compatible with boomrecorder or metacorder. http://www.mackie.com/products/1200f/index.html i thought the different routing options were neat. it seams that, if for some reason their is a computer issue, the routings will still work as well as the main outs. backup recorder and all the vairous feeds/ sends "should" work. thoughts?

Anyone had a MOTU interface box fixed? A friend has a Traveler w/ dead phantom power on one input. What sort of turnaround does MOTU have with this stuff? I've never seen a service manual for this gear so I wonder if an indie tech would be able to do anything w/ it. Philip Perkins

When using 2 MOTU boxes, is there any advantage to doing firewire device aggregation as opposed to using one box to make an 8 ch ADAT feed to the other (so 16 chan came from one box)? It seems like in the latter case you'd have one less device on the FW bus, which would be a good idea, right? Philip Perkins

Hey All, I'm busy editing a piece I recorded with BR. During recording, BR started a new file when the current one hit 2 gigs. When I put the two files together, there are a couple words missing. Not good- it's right in the middle of an important thought. In the past when the new file has started, it picks up right where the other one leaves off- with no break. Any thoughts why this might happen? Is this to be expected? The setup, if it matters, is: Direct outs from 442 into inputs 3-6 on a MOTU ultralite. Mix out of main o/p from 442 into input 2 of motu. cues on input 1. all into powerbook g4 running BR. 1.5 gigs ram. Recording to external firewire drive…

I've always used firewire drives for this purpose. I ended up with some Firelite USB 2 drives, and so far they seem to be fine. On paper they can actually be slightly faster than the FW version of the same thing. Is using these for small jobs (6-8 tracks) a bad idea? Computer is a 1.5g G4 Powerbook, w/ USB 2. Philip Perkins
