So I've decided to switch to Boom Recorder and trade in my DV824. There are a number of factors which made me want to do this, but now I'm looking for the best interface. I like the Apogee Ensemble, for the pure reason of Apogee's great AD/DA quality and their built in "soft limiters" which are supposed to be quite good. Mackie is coming out with the Onyx 1200F, but it has been delayed so long it makes me wonder. That unit has LOTS of analog inputs, which would be good for those obnoxious times that you have every mic out of the box and need to lay down playback and such. It also has gain control for all the inputs, which seems handy. Any thoughts? Robert S…

Hi Folks, I finally finished cutting together the video I shot of RME's Jeff Petersen at NAB. There's a lot of interesting topics that he discusses, including: why RME chose external PCIe instead of Thunderbolt a new standard for MADI over Ethernet why RME feels MADI is inherently more stable than DANTE 12V DC powered MADI interface with DSP Here's the link: I hope it's ok to post this here and not the Manufacturers and Dealers forum - it just seems more on-target in this forum. Greetings everyone, I had a Catastrophic fail on my Boom Recorder and Yamaha 01v96i fail last week, and I can't even begin to diagnose the troubles. First hour on set for the day, no troubles, no issues, everything working fine. Hour 3 now, and I noticed the Time Code on BR, going on and off once. So, I check the ISOs, and there is some distortion on the files. By Hour 5, I noticed the TC now just completely off and not being read by BR. So, I check the ISOs, and there's a lot more distortion now.. degrading as time goes by. I had to crap can the whole RB set up, and scramble to get a 788 put in place instead. Here's a sample file. I edited and sa…

I've been reading thru old posts seeing if I can find some answers about using the Motu Traveler for a computer based rig - and after maybe an hour, my eyes have glazed over and my head is hurting, so I thought I'd just throw a couple of small questions out there. My understanding with the Traveler is that the first 4 inputs are mic level only and the last 4 inputs are line level only. I would probably not be interested in using the mic pres generally (rather line level from a SD mm-1 or mix pre) for booms. When it comes to signals from wireless receivers - would it be advisable to use the line inputs only? With the pad on the 4 mic inputs, could you bring the outpu…

Here's the chain; Yamaha 01V96 AES/EBU out to Mutec Format Changer on D-sub 25. Mutec Format Changer to MOTU Traveler on ADAT Lightpipe. MOTU Traveler to Boom Recorder on an Apple Mac Mini on Firewire 400. Timecode from Denecke GR1 to Boom Recorder on an Apple Mac Mini through MOTU Traveler All sampling rates and bit deapths will be 48/24 throughout. Timecode already shows lock to the Mac at the Traveler. Can I assume that work clock will be carried through the AES/EBU between the Yammy and the Format Changer and through the Lightpipe from the Format Changer o the Traveler with no need for BNC coax? No need to speak about the setup. This rig is fitting …

Anyone used this? Is it any good? or am i better off using a "T" connector from a 744t into a fireface 800 and an octopre? http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/547600-REG/ART_SYNCGEN_SyncGen_Wordclock_Sample.html

It is obvious now that personal computers can be used as the main recording device, even in the professional setting of location field recording for picture. This is the place where we can discuss all the ramifications, exchange ideas and real world experiences, and share speculation about what the future will bring to our workplace. Regards, Jeff Wexler

I'm looking for a software that runs on a mac and offers what is called "O-Ton-Modus" or "cue mode" on Samplitude. One splits a track into several clips and when hit the space bar it plays one clip, pauses at the beginning of the next clip until one hits space again. And so on. Its just what I want for prerecorded phone conversations. I don't wanna use those cartridge-type software. Just not flexible enough. I need to rearrange the clips on the fly. Any ideas?

I had a great Hoodman "Eclipse" sun hood for my old Powerbook, but it is too small to fit the MacBook I use now. Hoodman doesn't seem to be stocking their Mac hoods anymore, and told me they might not be making them for computers in the future. (All the ones on their site--out of stock--were for G4 laptops.) I found this hood from Europe: http://www.theithelper.com/laptopshade.htm, anyone know it? Another suggestion? The MacBook screen is really not as bright as my Powerbook's screen was, so I do need help with it outside. Philip Perkins

I've been quite productive these last few weeks. Anyway, I have been testing the sample and frame rate changes as best as I could. I had recorded a 24 fps timecode and played it back using my iPhone into my MOTU 828 MkII. This way I could slave it in such a way that I could test a "word clock" rate of 48000 Hz and 48048 Hz (by setting the MOTU to read time code at 23.98). Then I recorded several files with different sample and frame rate settings and compared the timestamp in the audio file with a separate utility. I've also tested free running at a 48048 sample rate compared to the MOTU free running timecode, after an hour there was no visual deviation. So…

Are there any sound recordists here relying specifically on recording to computer only without running an external backup recorder?

Hi, How many of us here actually use a HUI (Mackie/Euphonix/Tascam) together with the MBP and Metacorder with several interfaces available in the market? My Plan :- 1) MBP with SSD in the express card slot as the recording media of choice. Dailies on DVD-R 2) Metacorder with MHlab 2882+ and a Mackie HUI mod for 12V. 3) 702T as Backup and TC, Car scene, long walk and talk...........etc etc 4) Com line will be giving up 1 analog input on the MHlab 2882 and do some aux routing with the MIO software. Will like to hear some feed back on my setup, and also some idea on using a HUI on set. Alan Chong

Hi all, I just got a Digi 002 to work with BR and wanted to confirm that it works at 24/48 in stand alone mode? I assume that using BR will not allow me to configure the Digi 002 for 24/96? The Digi 002 is sending prefader in stand alone mode (question being if the limiter can be applied before the signal reaches the BR)? Thanks Richard

I've been investigating options for production recording with a computer, and haven't found anything that really suits it for windows (and I don't want a new fruit-based computer) I've been using RME's global record function on Digicheck to do concert recording for some time, the recording is very stable and the metering's excellent. But it doesn't read time code, there are no metadata options and you have to name files when recording stops REAPER has all the functionality, but it is a full blown DAW and also has many functions which aren't needed on set. Maybe some templates could be useful? Does anyone have experience with either of these programs or any…

Has anybody seen these demos of the NVidia RTX Voice AI noise reduction App? It seems to be a game changer for eliminating all types of background noise from a Microphone input. Sorry all you Mac fanatics, it currently needs an NVidia RTX video card and Windows 10 to work. It is in beta and free right now but check out these video demos.

Yes.. I've been operating with BR v7.25.1 the last 4 weeks after Take made a revision for an issue I had, massive help he was . Anyways... I'm having some problems with sync and some pretty bad drift between files recorded on the 702T and BR, let me quickly explain the set-up: 702T is the master TC clock outputting the TC signal and word clock to a Motu Traveler which in turn is connected to a MacBook Pro running BR v7.25.1. BR's sample rate and bit depth are set identical to what the 702T is, and BR is recognizing the TC signal and clocking perfectly to what the 702T is outputting. This should all ensure that files created from BR would sync to those created on t…

Being new to Mac I'm curios about writing the DVD's for film break and such. Is there a way to incrementally write to the DVD and close the session at break? Ron, How were you doing this with BoomRecorder? Larry
