Hey there, This just popped up. Should one be scared?! If and how should this be embraced by sound guys? This will definetly be running wild on the market, when it comes to Reality-Formats and such. The question that comes up for me is, whether or not this will make any difference for the "human-personell". I read a lot discussions about how endangered sound mixers became because of the automation of their tools. It scares me, too. I'm just starting out in the business and really want to make a living of this. But every day something new comes up, that seems to make it harder for me to claim payment for what i love to do. On the other hand I have the feeling that th…

I wondered if it might be worth starting a thread where we could include many or all of the new kit announcements that are made or are about to be made at NAB 2015? I couldn't help but notice that Audio Ltd website home page is sporting somewhat of a tease ;-) Take a look at www.audioltd.com Discuss? Kindest, Simon B

AudioLtd's new digital system is very impressive and a welcome addition to our world. Looks and feels solid and very well designed. The receiver is single channel and has AES output. Possibly a Superslot compatible... The special modulation will make it easy to fit a lot of microphone frequencies in a very small RF space. Availability is September 2015 from Redding Audio. If you are at NAB stop and check it out...

I thought I share a bit of my work with you guys: I was on a German TV production in France last year. We had a scene with 5 characters in a 5:40minutes all done in one steadicam shot. Jump to minute 17:15 - 22:54. It was done on my side with the great tool of Zaxcom´s TRX recordings and remixing. I was getting poor reception on one of the actors. My position was inside the building, left side of the TV / fridge in the kitchen (21:07min). Was great fun and I´m glad they didn´t cut the scene with the additional material we were shooting for safety. Something went wrong with the upload on youtube (it´s all speed up a bit, sounds a bit pitched) but you`ll get …

The annual RAMPS/JWSound party will again take place on the Tuesday night of NAB. So that's: Tuesday April 14, 2015 Start time: 6:30pm Stop time: 9:30pm We'll be at the Satay Thai Bistro, same place we've used the last few years: http://sataylasvegas.com $30 gets us a buffet of Thai and other asian dishes, including a couple vegetarian dishes (see menu PDF in LarryF's post below). That price includes tax and gratuity. Money will be collected at the door and payment is required to get into our area of Satay. There will be a cash bar for drinks (reasonable prices, iirc). Kathy Baca of Lectrosonics is handling most of the organization (thanks Kath…

http://www.forbes.com/sites/hughmcintyre/2015/04/03/jimmy-fallons-lip-sync-battle-show-gets-off-to-a-fun-start/ Well yeah, but this is a battle we've been fighting our whole careers. DPs who change camera settings in mid-stream, FCP editors who can't decide if a show is DF or NDF (remember the 'automatic' pull downs?), dub techs back when who thought a mono pilottone tape could be read and dubbed using just one of the 'stereo' tracks ('but it sounds mono'), even today's divergent a/v paths in a station and unpredictable pix processing in the home... ... and don't forget producers who sit in the back of a large theater and complain that dialog is late... Or did…

The urgent need to preserve a cornerstone of American culture led folklorists like John Lomax to travel the country documenting early blues recordings and writers like Amiri Baraka to publish “Blues People: Negro Music in White America.” Although Margo Cooper did not know it when she began more than 20 years ago, she has followed that tradition and produced a documentary project that archives the oral and visual histories of blues musicians, their families and communities in northern Mississippi and the Delta. Her project, “Deep Inside the Blues,” includes B. B. King, Sam Carr, Bobby Rush, R. L. Burnside, Otha Turner and many others. It is, for her, a love letter to t…

I was sitting next to a nutritionist on a plane last night. He noticed my ear plugs and said it was good to see a young person taking care of his ears. After telling him I was a sound engineer he began to tell me ways to maintain hearing health. Niacin (B3) is a vasodilator and is especially good for the capillaries in the head, ears and cochlea, and may reduce the risk of tinitus. Ginkgo is also a good supplement to take. Thought I would pass on the info to you soundies, if you didn't know it already. To your health, Ben

New map shows America's quietest places. Based on 1.5 million hours of acoustical monitoring from places as remote as Dinosaur National Monument in Utah and as urban as New York City, scientists have created a map of noise levels across the country on an average summer day. http://news.sciencemag.org/environment/2015/02/new-map-shows-americas-quietest-places

Here's a very sobering article about the indie film business in Deadline:Hollywood. A pertinent quote: A new survey by the WGA East of 100 active indie filmmakers found that more than 60% of them reported they’ve had problems receiving initial compensation and/or backend payments for their movies. This is especially true of indie films released digitally. In its 2015 Independent Film Survey, the guild found that “Half of respondents reported having entered into a ‘bad’ distribution deal, while two thirds of those surveyed have had a project released on a digital platform. The growth of experimental digital distribution deals based on complicated formulas for backend r…

The party-planning committee has been hard at work organizing the annual RAMPS/JWSound party held during the NAB conference in Las Vegas. Well, most of us just made some posts to JWS. But Kathy Baca of Lectrosonics has been hard at work. Thanks Kathy! The annual RAMPS/JWSound Mixer Mixer will again take place on the Tuesday night of NAB. This year, that's April 8, 2014. We will gather at the Satay Thai Bistro, same place we've used the last few years: http://sataylasvegas.com Probable Start: 6:30pm Probably Stop: 9:30pm The Satay Grille will provide us with a buffet of Thai, Indonesian, and Malay dishes (probably including some vegetarian dishes)…
