Everyone may have seen this already, but I love how the commercial is heralding this remarkable state-of-the-art "transportable" cellular telephone. Someone should show this commercial to Siri and she what she thinks. http://youtu.be/DXcImcc3RDw

I am so proud of my son (shameless plug for David aka Strangeloop) who performed at the legendary Hollywood Bowl Sunday night, doing all the visuals for his long time friend and collaborator, Steven Ellison, known by the stage name of Flying Lotus. Sad news that Fred Johnston passed away on Wednesday. Fred was a terrific Boom Operator, Music Playback specialist and Sound Utility. Fred always worked hard and made it fun with his dry sense of humor. He will be missed.

Hello All, Came across this article which resonated deeply. http://www.dailymail...-inaudible.html No idea who recorded it, but I've got a deep suspicion it was an excellently recorded shoot featuring mumbling and whispering actors ? Wondering what kind of psychology you sound mixers are employing these days to coax more level from actors - or to get directors to ask for more level from actors? Currently recording a 2hr 1850s period drama for British tv which is often a 'whispering contest'. On at least 30% of scenes I'm running Audio 2040 radio booms with the TX pack on '7' and the AD149 gain pot at around 3-4 o'clock to get dialogue occasiona…

This was the worst movie I've seen in a very long time. Not because of it's subject matter whatsoever. It sounded absolutely terrible and the shooter couldn't seem to keep the camera steady on a lock down interview. If I ever teach a class this will be one of the films I use on what not to do with lavs and only lavs. There was obviously no sound guy attached to this film and there is no usage of a boom throughout. I met Dinesh D'Souza a few times, and although an interesting guy, he should be ashamed of letting this kind of negligence fly. What is your opinion of the film? This may belong in the politics section either way.

Hi-ho, here we go, with a headline worthy of The Onion. Another talented amateur (in this case, a man named Scott Koue Stu Maschwitz whom I do not know) is bitching that good sound equipment costs too much money and is too complicated to use. Here's his manifesto: Dear companies that make production audio gear, I love filmmaking. I love shooting. I love everything about the on-set experience. Except recording audio. When I’m filmmaking like a grown-up, I have someone else—an expert—handle dialogue recording. But often, it’s just me. Me and my portable audio recorder and expensive microphones and absolutely no frigging idea what I’m doing. I’m…

Productions should acknowledge freelancers’ spend on technology, says Fraser Barber. Productions pay a fixed rate for gear, and it’s pretty much a non-negotiable part of a freelancer’s contract regardless of how new the kit is. But with little or no increase in rates over the past few years, it feels like an unsustainable position. I upgraded most of my kit last year when I was working on Sinbad for Sky 1. It was a nine-month shoot and a good reason to invest in new kit, so I bought a Zaxcom Deva 16 hard disk recorder. I was glad I did, because for a series like Sinbad, there were some tricky locations and it was sometimes hard to decide the best way to cap…

I just had a conversation with an editor/friend of mine about these low-budget "Labor of Love" projects. Without even thinking, I blurted out... The problem with these Labor of Love projects is: it's OUR labor and THEIR love! So that's another T-shirt. As god is my witness, I'm going to use this line, the next time I get into a conversation with one of these producers...

http://www.guardian....idents-survival Heavy rain, high winds and floodwaters swept over Louisiana and Mississippi on Wednesday, as Isaac was downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm and a fortified levee system appeared to have saved New Orleans from disaster. Rescuers picked up dozens of residents who had ignored warnings to leave low-lying areas, seven years to the day after hurricane Katrina devastated the city. Power lines were cut and debris littered the streets, prompting authorities in New Orleans to declare a dusk-to-dawn curfew. Louisiana officials said they would intentionally breach a levee in Placquemines parish, south of New Orleans,…

I had a dream (well, nightmare) last night in which I looked down to find that my 788t had 4x as many buttons, knobs, switches, led's, and lcd's than usual and I didn't know what the heck any of them did. When I commenced fiddling with them, they broke off in my hands. I take it 'complicated gadget dreams' are going to replace my 'totally unprepared for physics/calculus final' dreams.

AES Standards Committee Chair, Bruce Olson, reports an important step forward in the development of Audio over IP in broadcasting: The Audio Engineering Society and the EBU have announced a collaboration with the goal of producing a new common packet-based network standard for linear PCM audio. This liaison is officially entitled "Next generation AES/EBU Interface Based On IP Technology." These two organizations have a history of fruitful collaboration. First published in 1985, the AES3 standard, also known as the AES/EBU interface, is a fundamental standard for the transport of digital audio signals between professional devices. The new liaison is a continuation of …

I thought that doing a movie in Huntsville AL at the space research center would be RF purgatory. Wrong. Block 21 has worked flawlessly for me for four weeks. Ninety percent if not more of this project has been on wires because of a combination of background noise and directorial style. Wide and tight all day long and huge turbines and air conditioners in the center have prevented the use of boom mics but we've done really well using the wires even in close ups. I don't know if my career will evolve from TV series to movies, I don't mind either way, but I do know that the more we succeed at providing production audio on wires that is on a par with larger diaphragm mic rec…

From the US public radio show, On The Media: THE LISTENING LIFE Friday, July 20, 2012 In his 84 years Tony Schwartz produced over 30,000 recordings, thousands of groundbreaking political ads, media theory books and Broadway sound design, invented the portable recorder, delivered hundreds of lectures and had full careers as an ad executive and a pioneering folklorist. And he did it all without leaving his zip code. In a piece that originally aired in 2008, the Kitchen Sisters, look back at his life spent listening. I have not posted on here for some time, still manning the FISHER 7 and so pleased with how well it performs for me.. A few shows ago with live audience, I had a big ball o string at the big crank pulley 5 min: before rolling on a different set, I did not panic but said holly fuck to myself for good luck,, but I had my boom up and running with a temp restringing of that cord string and a full restringing after the show was over. I just needed to get it up and running ASAP. I knew that day would come, when that would happen to one of the booms, in fact I had many work dreams about it and what to do so I was prepared to deal with it if it ever happened. On Tues. I will go i…

This is a recent post from the RedUser Group: I've just seen the start of the race to the bottom and a company renting out scarlet packages for $1250 a week? Why would anyone do that? What good can possibly come of devaluing the price of your kit that much. I've seen Epics go for $100 a day. Come on people -- wake up and smell the coffee. I'm all for free enterprise, but not blatent foolishness where no one benefits from the long term effects of such short sighted short term thinking. I'm not surprised. I'm just sad. I left the stills industry as I saw its demise by similar short term opportunists and it's all set to happen all over again with moving images. It would…
