I'm sure I have talked about this before (but here goes anyway). Cameron Crowe and I discussed this thing where you hear a song and it immediately transports you back in time to a specific event or experience and it always seems to take you to the same place (usually NOT to the first time you heard the song but always to the same place). We call this The Theory of Definitive Listening, the moment in time that is defined by listening to the song). I had that moment today listening to "Start Me Up" on the radio --- instant transportation, in vivid detail and clarity, to the stage left wings of the huge set built at Sun Devil Stadium where we are filming "Let's Spend the Nig…

This was originally posted on the facebook jwsound group: I wanted to share with the group my experience of visiting Zaxcom today. Not only were they happy to show me around, they picked me up from the bus station and treated me to lunch as well! Glenn, Howie and Colleen all came out and we enjoyed a nice lunch at The Cheesecake Factory. Afterwords they drove me to their facility in Pompton Plains, New Jersey. If you haven't been and are from California, it's kind of like Valencia but greener. Upon arrival to the facility I was amazed to see an Electronic Engineer's heaven. Multiple workstations where dozens, if not hundreds of new wireless devices were being han…

here is a new trailer of the feature "Männerherzen 2" I have mixed in 2010 an 2011. http://wwws.warnerbr.../maennerherzen/ Quite often shot "US-style" wide and tight at the same time and often no rehearsal. I often relied on lavs and the Sanken CUB - which I really love since that shoot. e.g. the female instructor in front of all the pregnant couples was lav and a CUB in front of her maybe 1.5m distance on the floor covered by the couple in the front row Matthias

I usually check in on r.a.m.p.s. Usenet group about once a week but I hadn't been back there for awhile. Today I did check in with r.a.m.p.s. and I was really shocked and saddened by what I read. I have posted an excerpt of a thread/conversation that was initially addressing the problem of spam on Usenet and r.a.m.p.s. in particular. from r.a.m.p.s.: I highly recommend posting at Jeff Wexler's forum http://jwsoundgroup.net/ These newsgroup services have no native search functionality and anyone can post messages, including spammers. Mark O'Russa ……………………………………………………………………………… +1 I use a newsreader and see very little spam, but …

Hey all, Music is a big part of a lot of our "why we became sound men and women" stories. Today at google, the google logo will show a tribute video to Queen singer Freddie Mercury who would of been 65 today. Check it out and smile. http://www.google.com.sg/

I've been mixing for picture and booming as a "weekend warrior" for several years now while holding down a full-time job. Around a year and a half ago I assembled a legitimate sound kit and really tried to kick off my sound career. I've got over $12k invested into my kit (not much compared to many that post here), and I bought the equipment with hopes of being able to transition into location audio full-time. I've slowly gotten better at the craft over the last 18 months, and my understanding of set etiquette has matured quite a bit since the first few jobs I took on. I love the work, even though it regularly gets stressful and physically taxing. I get along well with…

Thinking about Nancy Wilson, Ann Wilson and Heart... thinking about Cameron and Nancy splitting up this last year. I love this performance from 1977.

Hi all . I very much enjoy reading your on the job stories and learning from all of you . Thought I would share my recent work experience. Sorry if boring. I took a turn from my usual work in the corporate world and worked a 98 page independent film. I have worked shorts before but nothing this lengthly. Well it paid for 10 new storm windows and a storm door and I did have a lot of fun and laughs with the young folk. After three days into the shoot I get a call from the director = producer= main actor telling me his editor says my track one is total garbage , cannot use any of it ! ( I wanted to meet the editor before shooting started but he hadn’t found anyone ye…

I am digging into layers of sound mixer geology in my garage cleanout that haven't seen the light of day in many years. I just came across my manuals for a IV-S with copied supplements for time code operation from 1986 and the Nagra IV-STC from 1988. Still miss watching those reels turn. : ) Also the second edition of Jim Tannenbaum's "Using Time Code in the Reel World" (Jan 1992). I was going to throw this stuff out but thought I'd post it here in case anyone out there is a collector of sound dept. memorabilia.

I read this today and I thought I would pass it on. I agree with the writer and wondered what others in this group thought about his POV. CrewC http://www.cnn.com/2011/OPINION/06/03/stephens.college/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

Hi everyone... Long time listener, first time caller here (from the post-production side of things, no less <ducks>). Jeff gave me the okay to announce the (re-)birth of a sound organization. The Canadian Film Sound Society was founded in 1978 (production mixer David Lee, may he rest in peace, was the first president) but was shuttered in 1981. We are giving the group a re-boot and, in 21st Century style, getting our legs back under us with a Facebook page as a start. If you're interested, please stop by and give us a "Like" and perhaps leave some feedback after reading our mission statement and what we are about. http://www.facebook.…

I have to admit I'm a total newbie with respect to RSS. I did manage to figure out how to enable a Topics RSS feed and playing around with it a little it seems like a really neat and concise way of using this site. The way that an RSS feed is displayed is handled by your browser, right? I have no idea how things look with other browsers, but with Safari the RSS listing is really nice and clicking on any of the topics takes you out of the RSS feed and back to the site and that topic post. I like it.

I'm pleased that we are all hanging in here after making the big moved (forced, by me) to this new site. We all made it over here fairly painlessly, bringing all our wonderful legacy content with us, and now everyone is just using the site for its intended purpose. It hasn't been without some glitches, some more serious than others, and the "learning curve" for the new site has been more daunting than I had hoped for. Just like with our equipment, this whole learning curve thing is a multi-faceted process wherein we learn how to do things and then discover what we like and don't like about how the developer has implemented the look and feel, the form and function and so f…
