I got an email from the post supervisor on the TV Pilot I did. She says: "Hi Jeff, Just wanted to pass onto you that both the sound supervisor and the post sound mixers commented on what a great job you did for our pilot 'Untitled Goldberg/Gordon Project.' Your excellent work made our jobs a lot easier through the entire process. Thank you again for your diligence and your hard work. I hope to work with you again in the future. All the best, Fritzi" I was pleased to hear from the production as a follow up. I think we did an okay job, not great, but I am sure they have had to deal with a lot worse. Thank you to all those here who helped me with advice a…

Thanks to John and the other Coffeyistas for the interview with two of my production sound heros, Gene and Steve Cantamessa. They are The Cats, as far as I'm concerned. Philip Perkins

Anyone know what's happened to David's site. All the links seem to go no where. Malcolm Davies A.m.p.s. (Production Sound Mixer.)

Not for the faint of heart. This is WFO to me, as in a full throttle Adrenalin fix.

This road sign caught my eye. The way this industry is going often I kind of feel like a cheap prostitute, especially after the Producer promises me "first-class accommodations". Then when I arrive on the location after ten hours of travel, I'm told by the production office that all the "good" rooms are gone and we are going to have to put you up in the Holiday Inn, where the grips are staying! http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1263210/Italian-prostitutes-road-sign-warn-motorists-impending-distraction.html?ITO=1490 RL

TALKING HEADS once in a lifetime

Movies shot in HD really confuse me. I can spot them right off the bat of course because the 'LOOK' is different to film which I prefer. I saw a movie this weekend which I really enjoyed except for the fact that it looked really flat and washed out. It leads me to believe that as with any media, it's not the format but the technicians utilising it that make the difference. I've seen films that looked like video and HD that looked amazingly like film. The thing that struck me after watching this movie was that they didn't use enough primary colors in the production design. To my eye HD doesn't represent pastels and subtle shades as well as film and some movies shot on HD s…

Clapper/Slate/ 1 2

Listening to Mark and Brian on the radio this morning on the way to work. "Ten approved" quiz. Question. What is the marker called that signals the start of a movie take? Answer: Clapper board I called them and didn't have time to stay on the phone long enough to be on the air but I am certain that "clapper board" is a distinctly English version of "slate". One of the DJs answered "slate" and was told it was incorrect. Just setting the record straight. And Mark was certain that the "clapper boards" were connected to the camera by blue tooth. Am I so far out of the loop that I missed this development in sync technology? Love those guys, they brighten my morning every day…

As everyone knows by now, I have been investigating alternatives to this Discussion Group. It has been an exciting and complicated process. Ultimately I will make the decision what to do and I am confident that our core people, and you know who you are, will go wherever we decide to land --- after all, you are the heart and soul of this wonderful group. For those of you who are interested, here are the things I have been looking into and these are the options under consideration: 2 traditional forum-style message boards, each with their good points and their not so good points a. hosted forum-style message board from Sparklit - Active Board http://jwsoundnet.active…

Diana Pokorny was the producer on Valentine's Day who was passionately committed to having the whole production "go green" as much as possible. There were lots of successes and some real failures, but the thoughtful and persistent effort made by all was fairly remarkable. L.A. Times writer Richard Verrier wrote a really nice article about our efforts. For makers of 'Valentine's Day,' going on location means going green Saving energy, cutting waste and recycling on the set help lower the movie's carbon footprint and raise the bar for 'green filmmaking.' By Richard Verrier February 10, 2010 The star-studded romantic comedy "Valentine's Day" is expected to generat…

It was a cold drizzling night in Kiev. I walked into a bar to hear a live band. The sound man was nervous. The leader singer was furious. The vocal mic was totally distorted. What had I walked into? I was a down on my luck boom op from LA. I came into the bar for a drink and a little R&R. But wouldn't you know it. More sound problems. I took a quick look and identified the mic as a dynamic and the board as a Yamaha 01V 96. Yeah, I'd seen this board around. I knew it had plenty of menus too. What I didn't know, was exactly what a menu was. Tonight, I would find out. The sound man looked at me with a mixture of hatred and confusion. He wasn't going to le…

Under the heading "Hollywood rethinks use of pricey A-list actors" MSNBC's website writes; [glow=red,2,300]LOS ANGELES - Hollywood studios are now thinking twice about splurging on A-list movie stars and costly productions in reaction to the poor economy, but also because of the surprising success of recent films with unknown actors.[/glow] And while on the road to work listening to Mark and Brian this morning, I heard them quote form a news article that Johnny Depp would receive thirty three point six million (Yes, that's $33, 600,000) to reprise his Jack Sparrow role in the fourth (and hopefully final) installment of "Pirates of the Caribbean" Oh, and he also has a b…

I just received our union magazine, the 695 Quarterly, and I read it cover to cover, thoroughly enjoying every bit of it! The statements from our President, Mark Ulano, about the importance of our relationship to the union, Jim Osburn's thoughtful, realistic and personal assessment of the new head of the AMPTP, Carol Ann Lombardini, Esq., the profile story on "Father Time", Mike Denecke, one of nicest most creative, humble people I have ever known. The editorial team at Local 695 is to be congratulated and celebrated: David Waelder, Richard Lightstone and Eric Pierce. Regards, Jeff Wexler

With all the discussion about stereo mics over in the 'Equipment' sub forum, I thought I'd take a moment to post and share a couple of recordings. In 2005 I traveled to Nepal and Tibet with my good friend Greg Simmons, who brought along his Schoeps MS pair and Nagra V. The link takes you to 2 recordings, both a mixture of spontaneous recordings of street musicians and various soundscapes/atmos. The Nepal compilation in particular is rather nice I think. Listening on a decent pair of headphones or quality monitors is a must! Sit back, close your eyes, and enjoy the journey! Cheers, Jase

I know it may look like I am whipping a dead horse (boy, I really don't like the phrase, remind me not to use it again) but I am continuing to experiment and compare our Discussion Group here to CinemaSound. Just today I decided to do a post about the Tascam HS-8 rackmount CF machine that we are all hoping will be used in telecine in the near future. I have seen the original post here and the replies and they all work okay --- we have been informed, we have commented, we have looked at the pictures. Making a similar post at CinemaSound, it was so much easier, the text entry box supports rich text (wysiwyg) and the uploading and attaching of an image (placed where you want…

I admit it. I like "Glee." It started out as vicarious appreciation because of my wife and morphed into a genuine interest in both the story and characters, not to mention the creative use of multiple music genres. Then I noticed that Philip Palmer was the mixer and that clinched it. Nice job Philip. I'm actually jealous for the first time in a long time. It feels good. May the show live long and prosper. If you feel inclined how about some info on playback and what it's like working on the show? Cheers Mick

I was fairly sure I would not be able to get to NAB this year but the movie I am going to be doing has been postponed so I should be able to attend. Anyone else here going to try and get to NAB? The dates are April 12th to 15th for Exhibits and I am assuming our get together will be the traditional Tuesday evening, April 13th. Regards, Jeff Wexler
