I know we've discussed the Christian Bale "Terminator" rant here before and that it sparked a discussion on rights to privacy that actors should (and usually can) expect on set. Well, Christian is talking about it again, and mentions the understanding that actors have with us regarding eavesdropping. http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2009/apr/30/christian-bale-terminator-salvation-rant

May the weekend find you in good health, enjoying your family and friends. Please take a moment to reflect and give thanks to all of our Veterans and their families who gave of themselves for our country. The long march of creating a more perfect union is their legacy. Well done Vets. CrewC

As some of you may remember, I contemplated purchasing a CD replication company here in Austin this year. As I started to figure out how to grow the company, I realized that the more involved I got into the film/video projects, the more I ignored the music side of things that I really enjoyed. I decided that I needed to get back to the basics (for me at least) and get more involved in the music scene again. I made a few calls and let people know I was still around and introduced myself to a few people who I didn't know. Turns out that was a great decision. This week I'm recording an orchestra at our fine arts house, and in a couple of weeks, I have a full day of recording…

Well I just got out of a screening at the Chinese Theatre for Terminator 4 Salvation. Nice Job Mark and your crew for recording a lot of whispery dialogue in what must have been some pretty hostile sound locations. However it was hard to listen critically because the movie was simply TFL. (too F**kin Loud) Take earplugs with you if you want to save yourself temporary hearing loss. I think it has more explosions bullet hits and vehicle crashes per second than any film I have seen in recent history. And when the HKs weren't rumbling overhead firing Cannons or the TermiGators weren't sloshing around in the lagoon, the Music was cranked up to Hanz Zimmer Threshold o…

I saw two movies recently, and although my opinion of them as movies is immaterial, I saw that they were both mixed by my old friend Peter Devlin and that second unit on both films was mixed by our posting colleague Phillip Palmer. Star Trek sounded great, and the mix was very much in tune with the pace and energy of the film. I spoke to Peter about it and although he had some wardrobe issues to deal with, the dialogue was crisp and very legible, fitting in harmoniously with the music and FX. Peter and Phillip's other film was Angels and Demons, a movie that was spoiled for me by the occasional merge of the dialogue into a morass of music and FX rendering some scenes u…

My wife and I saw a movie this weekend that has slipped under the radar. Remember Renny Harlin? Used to be married to Geena Davis and directed Sly Stallone and some other 80s 90s icons before a couple of his movies tanked in a big way? (I remember some sort of pirate movie with Geena Davis that decelerated his career) He helmed this film, 12 rounds, and although it will never raise any thespian appreciation eyebrows, boy what a great action movie. The visuals are stunning, no pun intended, and the sound is awesome. A very stressful, exciting, entertaining two hours. Check it out if that's your thing. Great sound design and dialogue recording. IMO. MIck

Set Visit?

Anybody in LA working on a set I could visit? I'd love to hang out and see how it's done when there's an actual budget. I'm not sure what I could offer in return (unless you need a hand...that I could do), but I'd definitely owe you one! -Sonny

Scott, our 1st AD speaking: "The call time is still 7 am tomorrow but we won't be doing the next episode, instead we're going to be working on a WEBISODE. No need to worry since very few things we'll change --- we're still going to be shooting 8 or 9 pages, we have 2 company moves, and I think unfortunately it may turn out to be one of those really long days. There will be a few changes you should be aware of. I don't think we'll need the Utility Sound tech tomorrow, I think we can do it all with just our mixer and the boom operator, and we would really appreciate it if after Don wires up the actors on the Call Sheet he could help camera out with their stuff (you know tho…

IA Local 829, United Scenic Artists New York, has signed a non-compromised contract with the AICP. Below is a cut-n-pasted letter posted on the 52 Members newsgroup: Hi everyone, I received this letter recently from IA 829, and I found the contrast to our negotiation interesting, we have a lot to learn. To ALL: On Wednesday of this week, we reached an agreement with the AICP for a new three term of our Commercial Production Agreement that includes a 3% raise in each year of the contract. We defeated their attempt to impose provisions for 'low budget' and 'non-traditional' commercials on us. Going forward for the next three years, all comme…

Okay... going to be in Memphis for 4 days. Never been. VERY excited to see Graceland and other Elvis-related and music tourist attractions. But other than that, do my diverse group of JWsound friends have any other ideas while I'm there? Cigars, beer, and other things?

There is no doubt in my mind actors are capable of tapping into a breadth of human dynamics most of us will never understand. I've lived with them, worked with them and rode the rollercoaster as a scripted character is brought to life. The issue at hand is who has the duty to enforce discipline on an individual failing to grasp who they really are and where they are … (out of touch with the present). Out of touch project members in any department are a threat to our safety and our future... These folks need to be disciplined. Friendships and politics sometimes keep that from happening. If you've worked on sets with drunks, drug addicts or people under th…

Dear Colleagues, i am an experienced production sound mixer from Berlin, Germany, just visiting LA for some days. While i use the time to visit your local sound equipment stores and rentals, to test newest technology and to find helpful gadgets which makes our life's on set easier, gadgets you may have here in Hollywood we may not know in Germany... I also would love to visit a working set to find out how you are working here on the bigger sets in Hollywood we may seldom have, to exchange experience and to learn new stuff. If you feel possible to offer, this would be great. My websites shows the projects i were working on, from feature film to documentary, both for ci…

Spooks/MI5
by Mick- 1 reply

THis is probably of interest only to U.K. posters but if anyone has seen the series MI5, or Spooks as it's known in the UK, do you know who mixes it? I have seen seasons 1-4 on dvd and have season 5 at the moment. This is one of the best written, best shot and certainly best mixed TV shows I've ever come across. I've seen it on A&E at some dark hour of the morning but it deserves a study just for the revelation of the inspiration for the editing and shooting style of "24" which I'm certain emulated this show, especially in the split screen editing, mostly hand held cameras and creative political/drama/current affairs storytlines. Great show. You can get it through Net…

An often overlooked frightening provision in the new proposed contract: â€On covered programs for original New Media rates and terms of employment are freely negotiable, except that union security, grievance and arbitration and no strike/no lockout provisions will apply. No mandatory staffing and full interchange of classifications will also apply.â€ In what universe does a union agree to, and recommend ratification of, this language? It is clearly not a union at all. It is a self-serving, cabal of hypocrites interested in only one thing... their bloated salaries. The term "union security" does not mean security for the members; it means security for the orga…

In TV Technology there is an interesting article on the Grammy Awards this year. I have read several comments complaining about how the mix sounded on your home television. Basically it was mixed 5.1 and then the 2.0 mix "happens at your set top box". There were more than 600 microphones used on the show. Here is the link: http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/newbay/tvt_20090304/ Go to page 16. RL

Dear Friends, Colleagues, Brothers and Sisters, By now you have received the latest big envelope from the Local, the one containing a scary letter from your Business Agent, another scary letter from the president of our International, the dreaded Memorandum of Agreement and the actual ballot. If you haven’t yet mailed in your ballot I hope you’ll take a moment to read this before you do. I think most of you know me. I’m writing without any official capacity or secret agenda; I’m a sound mixer with a family and a mortgage living and trying to work in California and more than a little worried about the state of things. Unless you are living in a cave (without …

All the numbers on our membership are there in the files! Someone inside needs to run a report detailing exactly how many members would be affected if the 400 hour rule was in effect this qualifying period. Are we talking a handful of people, or are we talking hundreds and hundreds? The union leadership already knows what the expected attrition rate would be. Why can't we get access to that information? If it's a small amount, then no worries, we work harder (only said for emphasis). But, if it is a large amount, over 10% - 15% or higher, then this information is being kept from us for a reason. It would be devastating! Our leadership works for us, so why…

By The Numbers It appears that that the IA and the AMPTP are not so good at math … According to the “Fact Sheetsâ€ and “Officialâ€ letters of explanation regarding the increase in qualifying hours from 300 to 400, the increase was due to a projected $587 Million shortfall. A shortfall due to rising cost of health care. The IA put the cost of health care increases at a staggering 9% per year “compoundedâ€. They also claim that the Plan spends $19,100 per year for family coverage. Furthermore, the IA “fact sheetâ€ claims the Plan spends $500 Million per year on health coverage. But according to The National Coalition on Health Care: “In 2008, emplo…

If any of our members here @jwsound.net ever find themselves in Fullerton, please email me and if I am around I would enjoy meeting you in person. Even though I feel I know many of you from your posts, there is nothing like a face to face. I bring this up because today Robert Sharman and I did just that and we had a nice chat. So much easier than typing and reading between the lines. Beware though, he was a little shocked that I didn't really have a long gray mohawk/mullet. That is my super hero costume. He got over that and we got along great. Later. CrewC

I got a call from someone today who needs a quick recording done of a corporate employee in Coral Gables. Sounds like easy money if you are avail (they didn't say a date, and I think that's flexible). Any JWSounders in that area? Philip Perkins
