Just when I was getting a tad complacent about how easy our show has become over the years (just finishing episode 200) Big Mo strides back. William Friedkin has returned to direct the 200th episode and has adopted a "no rehearsal, one take, let's improvise the scene and tail slate everything" attitude. I'm perked up and rummaging through the bathroom cabinet for old valium tabs. He's fun though and livened everyone's game up. Contrary to previous posts I'm now turning in iso tracks like there's no tomorrow. MIck

It was very interesting on monday morning, to congregate around the craft service table and listen to the wide variety of topics being bandied about and verbally dissected; just another manic monday...or so I thought. What struck me as unusually interesting was the amount of discussion and opining about the quality or lack thereof inherent in the mixes of the music from the previous evening's grammy awards show. I listened with rapt attention as the members of various departments lambasted the sound quality of some of the musical acts that performed live on the show. I only heard about half of the program but was generally disappointed with what I heard. In particular I t…

I just saw a clip from last week's American Idol. A completely crazy-seeming contestant makes it through to the next round, and begins to thank EVERYONE. Who is on the top of her list? Jesus. Then God. Who else does she single out? The "guy holding the sound stick." AIcrazy.mp3

from Alan Disler: The new Hollywood Basic Agreement between the AMPTP and the IA is a bitter pill surrounding a poison pill for every below-the-line worker in film and television in the United States. While attention is being focussed on the draconian 400 hour health insurance requirement shamefully acceded to by the IA negotiators, the “New Mediaâ€ provisions are being practically ignored. It is clear why. The so-called “New Mediaâ€ agreement will eventually be recognized as the document in which the IA blithely gave up the struggle for: decent pay decent hours decent working conditions respect for professionalism. With one flourish of a compli…

I got to thinking about Sound Women after Peggy Names posted here yesterday. When I started out in 77, there were very few women working in sound. Peggy, DG Fisher, Sunny Meyers, Pam Raklewicz, were pioneers forging the path that most take for granted today. They faced very old school thinking and customs on the sets back then, but proved that they could do the job as well as anyone out there. Maybe even better. I had the good fortune to work with DG a few times, and Pam boomed for me for over a year n a half. We had fun and did as good a job as we were able. Walk on any commercial set these days in L A and there is a 60 to 70 percent chance the boom op is a woman. Th…

Saw "Frost/Nixon" today and thought it was a very good film. I don't think even once I thought about the sound, except during the credits when I realized I hadn't thought about it. This, I think, probably has to do with both the actors' skill and Peter's tracks. Nice work.

This past week I was contacted by somebody who I use to work for back in the early 80's. He hired me to help him in his cassette duplication plant. My job was to do pretty much everything. When I could, I would go down to the studio and help out there too. It pretty much put me on my audio path. Later he sold the studio, but he kept doing the cassette duplication and pretty much owned the market for a long time in central Texas. He started a printing business to print the labels, and after a few years, I left to do other things. As cassettes faded, he moved into CD replication, but I don't think he really took things as seriously as he should have. In fact, he admitted th…

Somewhat overlooked in the outrage over the 400 hours requirement are some other key aspects of the new contract. For anyone who doesn't know this already, Gary Dunham's comments, cross-posted below, sadly says it all: (my emphasis added) Provision in the new contract; On covered programs for original New Media rates and terms of employment are freely negotiable, except that union security, grievance and arbitration and no strike/no lockout provisions will apply. No mandatory staffing and full interchange of classifications will also apply. In what universe does a union agree to, and recommend ratification of, this language? It is clearly not a union at all.…

http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-fi-sag25-2009jan25,0,40454,full.story From the Los Angeles Times Fierce infighting at a pivotal time for SAG The Screen Actors Guild has a long history of conflict, but experts say the state of the union is now more perilous than ever. Labor watchers say a dramatic structural makeover is urgently needed. By Richard Verrier January 25, 2009 This evening, hundreds of stars will line the Shrine Auditorium to toast their peers in the 15th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. Behind the showbiz glitz and glamour, however, an ugly boardroom drama has paralyzed Hollywood's largest union, founded in 1933 when veteran chara…

When I lateralled from music to film in the mid eighties and started doing commercials and documentaries, I used to enjoy being as close to the set as possible. There was a certain attraction in being an integral part of the film making process in which I was proud to be involved. As the years went by and the inevitable erosion of my naivete occured, I took a proportionate step backwards, physically. As more time passed and the perspective broadened I became less and less impressed with myself and more disconnected from the collaborative process other than that within my own department and whatever was necessary to produce a high quality product, resulting in even greater…

I am going to Vegas for a job next week, arriving Tuesday evening, shooting Wednesday and Thursday and heading back to LA Friday. I don't expect the days to be long, so thought I'd find out if anyone on JWSOUND would be in town and would be interested in getting together for a drink. Robert Sharman (818) 304-3066

Hey guys, any comments, thoughts, ideas, as to how the auction of the RF blks in question, will affect us in the very near future? one of my client/buddy sound mixers, has a venue rack (27/28) w.(6) 28's, and he is leaning towards doing the exchange deal for the vrt's $388 ea., for brand new units ,w/a 1 year warranty. and then get his Vrm, retuned (480.00?) to the 470-blk26 range. and of course his um400's re-tuned as well. probably divide the blocks in pairs, 4 in 2 blks per, or split evenly, at (3) per. Later,

This is what I go through everyday now on this site, often up to 10 spam-bot registrations waiting for approval. There is no way I am going to approve a member whose email address is "pornstarlickmyass @ geemail.ru". So, I have to just reject all these but I can't find a way to stop them all together except to suspend the online registration procedure. It is really just annoying for me since I have stopped anyone from actually signing up and posting. - Jeff Wexler

2 weeks ago I said to Marydixie, "We haven't done much HD this year..". Bang. Pow. 5 of the last 8 days have been with the 'Red'. I have used them all. I like the Red as far as it goes. The files I heard off the camera were fine as far as i could tell. It wasn't a great system we saw n heard the shots from. The build was 17.something. I gave the camera line level off my Cooper 106. I mixed a little down to be safe. The Raw filess looked great. Money for productions of stuff like most commercials can be 'Tamed' with new work flows like this, but if you screw up, you screw the pooch as far as $$$$ goes. Time will tell. I know my Deva4 recordings are good. CrewC

Got home last night after a fine day of work and found the new Coffey Audio Files waiting for me. Really well done. Give the staff a raise. All the articles were interesting to me, but knowing Rich Van Dyke for all these years, I found his to be outstanding. His dedication to the craft is on full display in the article. I just wish I hadn't read it all last night, now I only have my NY Times to read today. Oh well, as RVD would say, "Cheers". CrewC
