Got home last night after a fine day of work and found the new Coffey Audio Files waiting for me. Really well done. Give the staff a raise. All the articles were interesting to me, but knowing Rich Van Dyke for all these years, I found his to be outstanding. His dedication to the craft is on full display in the article. I just wish I hadn't read it all last night, now I only have my NY Times to read today. Oh well, as RVD would say, "Cheers". CrewC

Just saw 'Cadillac Records' yesterday. Reminded me how much I love music and the power it has for people all over the world. As I was jamming TOD into the slates this morning I realized today is the sad day we lost John Lennon 28 years ago. His music continues to inspire all these years later as does so many who are still performing and those who have passed like Muddy Waters. Long live music and it's power to move and connect us all. I have a 6:00 am call in Santa Clarita. 1 plus hr commute from No Orange Co. Rain all day as I sit under a pop up finishing a three day American Truck commercial. Most around me seem miserable. As we wait out a down pour, I think back on the long weird year that has been 2008. Lost friends and my father which is natural, but so are floods. Still hurts. War, Greed running amuck, People loosing jobs, homes, 401 k's.... How come I feel so good? Maybe it's my nature. Or perhaps it is because I have many good friends, and a huge family. Maybe it is because I see our country rising to a challenge, one most of us have never faced. Maybe just my love of Pacific rain storms... Mi…

I get off on new technology, especially when it makes my job more interesting -- fun even. My intel Mac-Mini that I use primarily for Boom Recorder as my backup is also a cool place to try stuff out. I've been experimenting with "Spaces" where I have the screen in a quadrant to observe four operations at once. The screenshot I've attached shows you what I'm doing. Quadrant 1 is Boom Recorder. Quadrant 2 is Studio Manager of my Yamaha 01V96 where I can see the mixer operating in real time. Quadrant 3 is the Fireface 400 mixer, where I can see the inputs and outputs of what's going to Boom Recorder. Quadrant 4 is the Camera's video transmitter - I get that through m…

Hi all. . . It's been a lot of fun reading what some of you folks are saying about poor little ol' me here in Kansas and my film-dreams-coming-true project. I just wanted to correct a few misconceptions. Someone mentioned that we were using a 416 and figured "we'd get what we are paying for" (in other words, not much). In point of fact, the audio we are getting is just stupendous on this shoot. Our sound mixer, Jithu, was an electrical engineer before switching to sound design and now has two degrees in sound design (including an MFA). He knows what he is doing, and with a great young boom operator (a wonderful young man by the name of Adam), we're getting ever…

As I write this I'm on stage 22 at Universal outside of a small set meant to replicate a boathouse. If this thing is more than 30'x30' I'll be surprised. Our DP, a talented and sound friendly guy, likes smoke. I am not a fan of smoke on the set but I can usually find a spot away from it so that its inevitable effects on the respiratory system become other people's problems. But not today. Today, because the smoke pumped into a small set will inevitably dissipate between takes, and the resulting wait for the 'couple of puffs" and 'wafting" are unacceptable to time-conscious ADs and producers, then in their wisdom and concern for the crew, they have decided, and not for the…

I had an interesting time the other day. We were shooting a live 24frame HD video in the background, projected onto a giant screen in a lecture hall setting. The lecturer was in the foreground and the screen was his whole background. There was dialogue from the lecturer which was reacted to and answered by the full face on the video. The film camera pulled focus back and forth from the lecturer to the video screen. Setting up the playback so that the video audio came into the hall and the audio from the hall was sent to the actor on the live feed was quite the conundrum, but kudos to Cooper whose mixer's routing versatility saved the day. The problem that arose was this.…

I remember a thread on what the Deva Sound Report looks like. I could not find the original thread and I also remember it became a debate over the 'quality' of the report written to disk between the Cantar and Deva? I've attached the file that is written to the folder of the Deva for observation purposes. It is a .CSV file which will open in Excel. You could create a specific Excel template file that you open it in, which could also include the show name, etc. etc. The information in the 'native' file has the necessary information that the sound editors would find useful. I 'write' the report on each DVD-RAM I mirror, as well as on my external archive FW drive that…

Ahh. The end of summer. I'm still wearing my uniform of long sleeve white T shirt, shorts, and flip flops and for 8 of the last 12 shoot days we have been making snow and doing winter or Xmas spots. The actors are bundled up in sweaters and parkas in the 90 degree heat. Some 4 or 5 months from now I will be bundled up in winter wear as we shoot babes on the beach on cold winter days. Gotta love the 'Biz'. No real point to this thread. Just shooting another one in Altadena on a beautiful Saturday. CrewC

Were someone, for some inane reason, to compile a list of people who qualify as being "a waste of space, " then surely film critics would be top ten material. I watched in writhing agony this weekend as two dorky, smug, superscillious individuals barely old enough to remember what real movie stars and good movies used to be, tried to out -intellectualize and out-pontificate each other in their rambling so -called critique of current movies. If the opinions of these pathetic wannabes are the best the networks can come up with in order to cater to the film going public then we should all stay at home and watch re-runs of the Andy Griffith Show. I don't think they even watch…

I took my daily look at deadlinehollywooddaily.com today and was delighted and surprised to read about an attempt by some of IATSE membership to encourage the national leadership to try and bring HBO in line with the current contract instead of the sweetheart deal that they have abused for so long. I posted on this subject several months ago and it's gratifying to see an attempt being made to make HBO donate what will amount to a miniscule slice of their bottom line to below-the-line labor which has formed such a large part of their ability to become the most successful cable network. How their low budget agreement was allowed to continue for so long is a mystery to me gi…

This one goes out to Landon who wanted to hear some old USC film school stories. Way back when I went, (71 thru 75 ) the school was on the east side of campus, off Figueroa St. between the freshman men an women dorms. No coed back then. The school was housed in a old WW1 barn and stable complex that had a central courtyard where all met and smoked and talked about 'Cinema', the war, girls, (cause sadly there were only 4 or 5 in the school then), or John Lennon and Harry Nillson getting kicked out of the Troubador. We were young and thought we knew it all. I had a curly blond Fro and every one had long hair except the navy guys who were cool, just didn't look it. I never t…

Before the current hiatus I knew I had to find a new boom operator as Kenny was going to mix "11th Hour". I posted my requirements in the relative section here at Jeff's site and had numerous replies, some from direct referrals from guys here and some from the applicants themselves, all of which were of such a high standard I was genuinely surprised. I'd like to publicly thank the talented guys that showed up to our impromptu "interview" at Coffey's and how much I enjoyed the anecdotes and experience they all brought. I chose to work with Dennis Fuller who has had a varied career and is going to be a great addition to our show as would all the other boom operators, but I…

Based on true lies that only Eric Toline, John Garrett and Bruno Strapko can confirm. This is not a salute to the group, but more a statement promulgated by a life long and highly selective strain of Turrets Syndrome. Regards, Ty Ford

Happy 4th of July to all. This used to be my favorite holiday. Been trying to make it so again. The people of this land are what keep me positive. So many folks trying to make things better. Have a great 4th, and think about what it means to be an American. Roll Steve Millers 'Living in the USA'. Somebody give me a cheeseburger. CrewC

It might be interesting to compare the various home studio setups that I'm sure most of us guys have. Even though we're not all musicians I'm sure there are other video or post sound equipment setups that lurk in garages and spare bedrooms. It would be interesting to compare setups and experiences with the various pro and consumer gear out there. Just a thought. I'll post mine if anyone's interested. Cheers Mick

Seth Gilbert and Michael Krikorian (Kriky), hosted their 2nd Annual Sound Department's BBQ on May 25th 2008 in Van Nuys under cloudy skies. It was fabulous. Fun and geek talk for hours. I hope they continue this BBQ for years to come and make it an "Annual Sound Department Tradition". It’s a lot of work for the 2 folks organizing it. Kriky and Seth were giving away their 2nd Annual BBQ t-shirts. The Menu - Eastern Carolina Pork Shoulder Texas Style Smoked Brisket Eastern Carolina Brisket Texas Style Smoked Baby Back Ribs Grilled Chicken w/sides The Chefs- Seth did an Eastern Carolina Brisket, Eastern Carolina Pork Shoulder, Esquites (Mexican Style…

Not sure if anyone saw this Article in the LA times? http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/front/la-fi-workers28apr28,1,6764360.story Something is quite wrong in a lot of the FACTS of this article. For example the lady, Karen Hartjen. If you do an IMDB search on her, it doesn't appear that she has any credits after 2004. And if you look on IMDB, it doesn't even appear that shes ever worked on CSI:NY at all! The article goes on to read that a guy by the name of Phillip Gordon lost his job on the set of StarTrek.. What the heck does this have to do with the WGA strike?? I'm no journalist, but I was on two sets yesterday in downtown, and many of the sound…
