Just read the news today, Garry Marshall, ‘Pretty Woman’ Director and Creator of ‘Happy Days,’ Dies at 81. I only did one movie with Garry but he was a wonderful person, I really loved working with him. His contribution to television and film is immense... he will be missed.

I want to thank Gotham Sound for the huge amount of effort they put into their mix assist demo--it was really informative and dealt very honestly with the issues of this technology (and also for including both SD and Zax as well as the Yamaha as a control). I listened to all the demos with headphones and pretty much agreed with their conclusions. My overarching thought was that with a little room treatment (of the unseen parts of the room) and perhaps the removal of the fan and some small directives to the talent, the scene could have been covered by a good pro boom op, (or 2) and would have ended up sounding far more natural and cinematic. Yes, the boom op(s) would ha…

https://www.gearslutz.com/board/post-production-forum/1097200-internships-aka-corporate-slavery.html There is an extended bow-wow going on over on the GS audio post forum about the hows and whys of "interns" working at recording studios and post facilities. Some of this comes down what the definition for "intern" is in a given organization or situation I guess. I've had people new to the biz ask to help me, shadow me, observe me etc on production sound jobs over the years, and I've never been very comfortable with the idea I admit: both for "unpaid work" and "babysitting" reasons, so to speak. In that a big percentage of the soundies who read this forum are often …

Happy Father's day to all the sound-daddies, most especially those of you who are having to work today. I hope you get props from your kids for the work you do to give them a home and a life.

I was very surprised to read this recent news story: “Randall Cobb had a serious injury last year in a playoff game and I believe, as I think he would as well and the team, that that was caused from him being mic’d up. Because he fell on his mic pack and he had an injury to his insides that kept him out of the game and probably would have kept him out of the rest of the playoffs. The puncture spot, or the injury spot, was directly adjacent to his mic pack.” While we may never know exactly what caused the terrifying injury to Cobb, Rodgers is certainly not a fan of the mic'd up component of the game regardless, saying, "I think being mic’d up, when I’m mic’d up…

Over the last two years I have had a steady date with a shooter who does mostly news and some corporate stuff. His health has become so bad that I end up carrying the water for the whole shoot. I am in my mid 60's and carrying heavy sand bags and setting up all the lights while he sits has just become too much. I booked a movie this month because I needed a change and some change for taxes. Needles to say I am getting the brunt of his resentment. Lots of whining to other professionals about how I am costing him work. I love the crew on this movie and hope that I can go this directing as I finish my career. I bought a used 664 last November just to dodge some t…

See: http://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/apr/19/bbc-tv-mumbling-problem-happy-valley While I'm encouraged to see the Brits address the problem of incomprehensible dialog on their TV shows, I have to admit that I am at a total loss when it comes to the statement that the "source of mumbling is incredibly hard to isolate". Wow, really!!? Well, Ms. Moore, I can give you a clue.....try looking AT THE SOURCE!!! I mean, DUH....!!

http://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/the-man-who-recorded-tamed-and-then-sold-nature-sounds-to-america Yet another madman who recorded sounds! I love the part that talks about how silence makes people and animals nervous, because it indicates the presence of predators. Enjoy!
