Over the last two years I have had a steady date with a shooter who does mostly news and some corporate stuff. His health has become so bad that I end up carrying the water for the whole shoot. I am in my mid 60's and carrying heavy sand bags and setting up all the lights while he sits has just become too much. I booked a movie this month because I needed a change and some change for taxes. Needles to say I am getting the brunt of his resentment. Lots of whining to other professionals about how I am costing him work. I love the crew on this movie and hope that I can go this directing as I finish my career. I bought a used 664 last November just to dodge some t…

See: http://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/apr/19/bbc-tv-mumbling-problem-happy-valley While I'm encouraged to see the Brits address the problem of incomprehensible dialog on their TV shows, I have to admit that I am at a total loss when it comes to the statement that the "source of mumbling is incredibly hard to isolate". Wow, really!!? Well, Ms. Moore, I can give you a clue.....try looking AT THE SOURCE!!! I mean, DUH....!!

http://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/the-man-who-recorded-tamed-and-then-sold-nature-sounds-to-america Yet another madman who recorded sounds! I love the part that talks about how silence makes people and animals nervous, because it indicates the presence of predators. Enjoy! Hi all, thought this event we are organising during the Brighton Festival might interest some of you...? In the UK premiere of the immersive video installation The Sprawl, award-winning artists and filmmakers Metahaven argue that the internet has become a disruptive geopolitical super weapon. Together with master cinematographer Remko Schnorr and acclaimed electronic musician Kuedo, Metahaven present The Sprawl, a strikingly poetic cinematic journey into the tangled machinations of the web, where terrorists tweet, anime videos disguise political spin and news channels hawk morality. Examining the splintered interpretation of world events including the Ukr…

“A reform the industry’s been awaiting for years; funding and rules to support Italian film and give theatres a new lease of life”. It was with this words, published on Twitter, that the Minister for Cultural Heritage and Activities, Dario Franceschini, expressed his joy at the approval by the Council of Ministers last night of the bill innovating the rules and regulations and substantially increasing funding for the Film industry. The bill is based on the model provided by French legislation. “The government is updating its approach to Italian film and increasing funding by 60%”, Franceschini explained after an afternoon in which the Minister and the Prime Minister M…

For some reason I started recalling the many music videos I worked on, mostly as a playback operator, during the '80s and '90s and recalled how it was that regular production sound mixers used to do those jobs, which paid pretty well at first and then both pay and conditions went downhill as the form "matured". Do people who frequent this forum do much playback-only work anymore? From what I've seen, many music videos have playback done by a PA off someone's phone etc, the main reason they had us back in the day was the need for an on-set cross-resolve (29.97 pulled up to 30 fps) off a TC Nagra with a TC display slate, as well as having a portable PA system. But lots …

SARAMONIC SR-WM4C WIRELESS MICROPHONE REVIEW We received a wireless microphone from Saramonic. It’s the SR-WM4C. The wireless microphone costs $90, which is surprisingly cheap compared to my Senheizer G3 set of $630. So we took the Saramonic mic to the test and listed all the pro’s and cons in this video. Rest of review (if for some masochistic reason you care...I only made it through 30 seconds of the video above...but thought I'd share :-/) http://www.cinecom.net/reviews/saramonic-sr-wm4c-wireless-microphone-review/

I do not like these early calls. I do not like them - not at all. There's nothing more the crew appalls Than standing here to freeze their balls.

Our friend and fellow jwsound member Marc Wielage had a major health issue last week and I'm happy to report he is doing well. Feel free to offer Marc your best wishes. He is certainly one of our members I most admire. He is helpful, insightful, and fun to have here @jwsound. Speedy recovery Marc. I'm glad things are going well. Big fan. CrewC I apologize if this was already posted here. I didn't see it if it were. I left out the details because A, I don't know all the details, and B, it is Marc's story to tell.

Why, you might ask, am I building a new cart? There is no rational answer --- I did start out to build a smaller, upright follow cart, but now I'm not really sure what I'm going to do with this. First time using StarCase rack kit (now that it is available in aluminum black powder coated) and I literally got this basic frame together in 2 hours. It is amazingly light (I know, nothing in it yet!) and very rigid structurally. It may end up just housing a stack of drawers, I don't know. In any case, I recommend StarCase as a source for anyone who really wants to build their own cart without having to rely on help from fabricators, welders, etc.

This might be problematic for our work, but they'd be great for Comteks. "Ya Babe, everything sounds fine." "Now, a tech company called Nervana is hoping to enhance those blissful musical moments with its new line of futuristic headphones. Though they look similar to ones peddled by the likes of Sony and Sennheiser, Nervana’s products have a secret weapon: They release dopamine, the feel-good neurotransmitter that’s often released into the human bloodstream after fun activities like eating chocolate, getting in a good run, or rolling around under the bedsheets with a special someone." My friend, our colleague, Terry Hillman passed early this morning near his childhood home in Harriman Tennessee. It's always hard to see someone go, but this one is especially tough for me. Terry was my first peer in TV/Film sound, starting in 1976. Our lives and professions mirrored each other's for decades with things like marriage, kids, motorcycles, first Nagra purchases, location travel, and everything else that comes with this line of work. Mostly known in the Nashville film community, Terry was a very knowledgeable audio engineer and talanted production sound mixer who influenced my own career probably more than I've ever acknowledged. He leaves a void that will ne…

Sadly this winter has taken another great Cinematographer as Vilmos Zsigmondy has passed on. I was lucky to do a bunch of commercials and part of a film with Vilmos. Better yet I had many a great meal with him and his best buddy Laszlo. His life story is as amazing as one could have. His work speaks for itself. His voice was one of a kind. RIP Vilmos. I was lucky to know you. CrewC

Would be an interesting story about the production sound and post production process for this drama. Fantastic style (photography, costumes). I grab the credits from IMDb Dennis Towns - Production Sound Mixer Shawn Allen - Boom Operator Alfredo Viteri - Boom Operator Karl Wasserman - Sound Utility Reading an article on Indiewire, says 87% was shooted with single camera. You can notice that from cutting, but the transitions from actors, it's just perfect.
