Hi everyone, Since there is a thread called "I hate recording" which I have posted in a couple of times, I thought it might be nice to have a thread called "I love recording". I know we all love to whinge and complain and thats why "I hate recording" is a great release for some of us but lets hear why people love this game we're in?? A few of the things I love about recording is the equipment we use, SD, Lectro, Zax etc etc. I love hooking it all up and making it work and sound great. I love the fact we get to travel to some crazy places that some people will never see in their whole lives. I love it when I work with great, cool people which makes the day…

For the first 15 years of my sound career, whenever we had to do playback in a scene it was done with a Nagra 4.2., and a speaker system. The tracks were set up in the same way we do it today with 3 or 4 pops, then whatever the recording followed the beeps... The trick was to play and rewind this ribbon of sound from start to finish and points in between, then back again, many many time in the course of the shooting day. Most of us got good at it or at least able to do it. There were tricks to doing this, like using splicing blocks and tape to mark stops, stops, and points within. All of this was time consuming to set up and the re/set for playback was as well.... Sometim…

I'm sure I'm not alone in hating certain aspects of sound recording. Marydixie, my boom op, hates people kissing or eating food. Lips smacking drives her nuts. Not much of a drive, but still.... I have a long list of peeves when it comes to recording actors. Here are two. # 1 is actors who when they say action all but swallow their voice and push no air at all. No one in life talks like this. When I see/hear this, which is all the time, I see them acting and it is more apparent than they suspect. Amateur hour IMO. The noise floor roars as the mumble core their way through a scene that the other actors can't even understand and they start mumbling as well. #2 actors wh…

How do you cope with the pressure, the long days, the travel, the exhaustion, the headphones, the hearing fatigue, the harness, the diet, the grind.

As the California Legislature is sleeping and focusing on Red Light Cameras and Drivers Licenses for Illegals, the rest of the country is doing everything it can to lure film and television projects away from Los Angeles. They are winning and California is losing. "Medient Studios, a Los Angeles-based production and distribution outfit with a presence in India, has announced plans to build a $90 million movie studio near Savannah, GA in a deal cleared this week by the Effingham County Industrial Development Authority. Although the deal may end up being good for Georgia, it comes during a precarious time for the Los Angeles-based entertainment economy — even with large…

Hi-ho, here we go, with a headline worthy of The Onion. Another talented amateur (in this case, a man named Scott Koue Stu Maschwitz whom I do not know) is bitching that good sound equipment costs too much money and is too complicated to use. Here's his manifesto: Dear companies that make production audio gear, I love filmmaking. I love shooting. I love everything about the on-set experience. Except recording audio. When I’m filmmaking like a grown-up, I have someone else—an expert—handle dialogue recording. But often, it’s just me. Me and my portable audio recorder and expensive microphones and absolutely no frigging idea what I’m doing. I’m…

So I thought I should share my experience with my newly configured Zaxcom bag and how it has been performing. I took a little inspiration from Brian's "Blue Lagoon" story and also from Rado's recent article in Sound & Picture. While I was in preproduction for a show that I would be working on, I was informed that there were going to be scenes where GoPro's were going to be mounted to off-road racing cars and that they would be driving very far off into the desert, far out of the range of any wireless bag reception. In the past, they said they have simply boomed bits and pieces of the two-way radio but that it never sounded great and that it never really captured the m…

I was in negotiation for a reality show. It was following 8 women around las vegas. Production wanted only one boom direct cable to camera and no wireless because they did not want to spend the extra buck. I told them that it would be very difficult next to impossible and refused to do it. They hired somebody else. Today I get an email from production pretty much laughing and making fun of me, saying it is working just fine with one boom. Are these people serious?

I dont think they make the statues from Wax anymore but the the museum manager refused to shut the ac off. And It was the noisiest AC I have ever heard. The shoot was yesterday and today production is complaining about the AC. Whos fault is it?

Neil Young's high-quality music service PonoMusic raised over $6 million via Kickstarter last year. Earlier today, the PonoMusic store launched, offering a selection of new and classic albums in high quality formats. The PonoPlayer is available to preorder online for February delivery, but The Verge reports reports that the player will be available at Fry's retail stores on Monday (January 12) for $399.

Is it too early for resolutions? Well, I want to lose some weight, eat more healthily, work on my cardio fitness, and try to save some of my hard earned cash instead of buying more equipment... What is everyone else planning on doing? I might get some inspiration from others.

I usually check in on r.a.m.p.s. Usenet group about once a week but I hadn't been back there for awhile. Today I did check in with r.a.m.p.s. and I was really shocked and saddened by what I read. I have posted an excerpt of a thread/conversation that was initially addressing the problem of spam on Usenet and r.a.m.p.s. in particular. from r.a.m.p.s.: I highly recommend posting at Jeff Wexler's forum http://jwsoundgroup.net/ These newsgroup services have no native search functionality and anyone can post messages, including spammers. The party-planning committee has been hard at work organizing the annual RAMPS/JWSound party held during the NAB conference in Las Vegas. Well, most of us just made some posts to JWS. But Kathy Baca of Lectrosonics has been hard at work. Thanks Kathy! The annual RAMPS/JWSound Mixer Mixer will again take place on the Tuesday night of NAB. This year, that's April 8, 2014. We will gather at the Satay Thai Bistro, same place we've used the last few years: http://sataylasvegas.com Probable Start: 6:30pm Probably Stop: 9:30pm The Satay Grille will provide us with a buffet of Thai, Indonesian, and Malay dishes (probably including some vegetarian dishes)…

Listening to Mark and Brian on the radio this morning on the way to work. "Ten approved" quiz. Question. What is the marker called that signals the start of a movie take? Answer: Clapper board I called them and didn't have time to stay on the phone long enough to be on the air but I am certain that "clapper board" is a distinctly English version of "slate". One of the DJs answered "slate" and was told it was incorrect. Just setting the record straight. And Mark was certain that the "clapper boards" were connected to the camera by blue tooth. Am I so far out of the loop that I missed this development in sync technology? Love those guys, they brighten my morning every day…

It might be interesting to compare the various home studio setups that I'm sure most of us guys have. Even though we're not all musicians I'm sure there are other video or post sound equipment setups that lurk in garages and spare bedrooms. It would be interesting to compare setups and experiences with the various pro and consumer gear out there. Just a thought. I'll post mine if anyone's interested. Cheers Mick

I did stand in line with about 200 people at the AT&T Store in Santa Monica. I was about number 50, many people bought 2 phones, but I did buy one. About 5 or 6 people behind me, after that, SOLD OUT. Apple Store had many, many more people and lots more phones. The iPhone: beautiful and very easy to use, wonderful touch screen, very good integration with the Mac. NOT perfect by any means and a few really serious flaws. Operationally, the phone part works great, but the seamless switching from EDGE network (AT&T) to available Wi-Fi networks, is NOT working properly, and so email and any Internet activities are painfully slow until you can get it to get OFF EDGE …

I find all sorts of interesting films and clips and what nots on youtube and vimeo and share them on FB and directly with friends and if they are music centric under the "On my Radio" topic here @jwsound. I'm guessing many of you do as well so I thought I'd start a new topic called At the Drive in... to honor of my misspent youth at the Drive in. It is actually the place I learned what a movie should sound like as I was often busy making out with a girlfriend, not watching, only hearing the films. This is one I saw at the Walk in theater called "Walking" in 1969. It was nominated for an Academy Award for best animated short..... It has stayed with me all these years. Cr…

My wife and I saw a movie this weekend that has slipped under the radar. Remember Renny Harlin? Used to be married to Geena Davis and directed Sly Stallone and some other 80s 90s icons before a couple of his movies tanked in a big way? (I remember some sort of pirate movie with Geena Davis that decelerated his career) He helmed this film, 12 rounds, and although it will never raise any thespian appreciation eyebrows, boy what a great action movie. The visuals are stunning, no pun intended, and the sound is awesome. A very stressful, exciting, entertaining two hours. Check it out if that's your thing. Great sound design and dialogue recording. IMO. MIck

I have worked on many a fine film and blessedly not to many turkeys, but If I had to come up with a double feature of my worst it would be "Stunt Rock" 1980 http://www.imdb.com/media/rm2589165568/tt0078335?ref_=tt_ov_i and "Hollywood Knight" AKA "Hard Knocks" 1979 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0130756/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 Both films are mostly unwatchable unless you love D- to F+ films. I challenge all my fellow mixers to come up with the wall of shame pictures. I know you all got them.;~) CrewC
