I have a Deva V, with a Deva 2 as backup. Two separate and independent systems. I have the capability of recording eight separate tracks if necessary. Yet...given the choice, which I am, I rarely even bother to activate tracks three through eight. I'd like to think it was because I think the "mixing" buck, at least the "dialogue mixing buck" stops here. I am a mixer. I spent many years in the U.K. and in Miami mixing music, contemporary and classical, recorded and live, for a living. I was a house producer at Phillips records (subsidiary of EMI) when I was in my late twenties, so I have a diverse background in audio mixing. Let me state unequivocally though, that my expe…

Am I the only one doing this? Instead of futzing around breaking down the Deva, comtek, wirelesses and a mini mixer to go and sit in the front with the driver, I had our friendly yet constantly ribbing grips load my whole cart on the insert car. No fuss, zero hold up and I had everything at my disposal that I would have on a non moving location. They secured me in with some speed rail and ratchet straps and other than some wind issues with my antennas, it went very smoothly. We rarely have insert car work but whenever it's called for in the future that's the way I'm doing it.

Scott, our 1st AD speaking: "The call time is still 7 am tomorrow but we won't be doing the next episode, instead we're going to be working on a WEBISODE. No need to worry since very few things we'll change --- we're still going to be shooting 8 or 9 pages, we have 2 company moves, and I think unfortunately it may turn out to be one of those really long days. There will be a few changes you should be aware of. I don't think we'll need the Utility Sound tech tomorrow, I think we can do it all with just our mixer and the boom operator, and we would really appreciate it if after Don wires up the actors on the Call Sheet he could help camera out with their stuff (you know tho…

I don't feel quite so old now. If Keith can keep doing what he's doing, so can I. It's only rock and roll (but I like it). Musician Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones performs at Echoplex on April 27, 2013 in Los Angeles, California. The Rolling Stones played a surprise club gig tonight in Los Angeles at the Echoplex - leading up to the launch of their "50 & Counting" tour on May 3, 2013 at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles. As everyone knows by now, I have been investigating alternatives to this Discussion Group. It has been an exciting and complicated process. Ultimately I will make the decision what to do and I am confident that our core people, and you know who you are, will go wherever we decide to land --- after all, you are the heart and soul of this wonderful group. For those of you who are interested, here are the things I have been looking into and these are the options under consideration: 2 traditional forum-style message boards, each with their good points and their not so good points a. hosted forum-style message board from Sparklit - Active Board http://jwsoundnet.active…

We had our now 4th annual Atlanta Sound Mixer Barbecue Saturday at mine and Kathy's house. We had sound friends from all over the country join us as well as friends from most of our vendors and manufacturers. We roasted two pigs and Lectrosonics brought brisket and smoked chicken. Gotham and PSC provided deserts, Trew and Zaxcom provide brew. Everyone was very generous with all of the food that was brought.

I was sitting next to a nutritionist on a plane last night. He noticed my ear plugs and said it was good to see a young person taking care of his ears. After telling him I was a sound engineer he began to tell me ways to maintain hearing health. Niacin (B3) is a vasodilator and is especially good for the capillaries in the head, ears and cochlea, and may reduce the risk of tinitus. Ginkgo is also a good supplement to take. Thought I would pass on the info to you soundies, if you didn't know it already. To your health, Ben

I remember a thread on what the Deva Sound Report looks like. I could not find the original thread and I also remember it became a debate over the 'quality' of the report written to disk between the Cantar and Deva? I've attached the file that is written to the folder of the Deva for observation purposes. It is a .CSV file which will open in Excel. You could create a specific Excel template file that you open it in, which could also include the show name, etc. etc. The information in the 'native' file has the necessary information that the sound editors would find useful. I 'write' the report on each DVD-RAM I mirror, as well as on my external archive FW drive that…

Just back from judging the largest ever group of applicants for ATAS's real, highly respected, paid internship program in SOUND, one of the 41 internships to be awarded for this summer. There were 1381 applications for the 41 internships. Overall applications were also up this year, and making the selections was made difficult by numerous candidates showing strong interest and qualifications for being involved with "movie-television sound" for their careers.. I was pleased to note 3 of our jwsoundgroup family provided letters of recommendation for SOUND applicants, and these were given particular weight by the 8 of us reviewing the application packages; at least tw…

Hey all, Just wanted to share what my sound utility showed me today, a brilliant way to save 24 AA batteries per week, and thats just for two slates. I had him cut down the AA battery sled for my TS-3 slate in order to act as a wedge to hold a single rechargeable 9V in the battery compartment. A charged 9V reads 8.4 and holds all day (13 hour day today). Thought I would share this info in case its new to your ears, as it was new to mine... Michael B. Koff, CAS

I'm sure I have talked about this before (but here goes anyway). Cameron Crowe and I discussed this thing where you hear a song and it immediately transports you back in time to a specific event or experience and it always seems to take you to the same place (usually NOT to the first time you heard the song but always to the same place). We call this The Theory of Definitive Listening, the moment in time that is defined by listening to the song). I had that moment today listening to "Start Me Up" on the radio --- instant transportation, in vivid detail and clarity, to the stage left wings of the huge set built at Sun Devil Stadium where we are filming "Let's Spend the Nig…

I'm sure we've all seen it happen, or maybe it happened to you. It's usually done in good spirit and although the newbie may have been a little embarrassed at the time, in the end you can usually have a good laugh about it. So let's hear some ! I remember seeing a young PA run around a whole afternoon looking for a the black and white video tapes. Apparently the cameraman had convinced him that he had only brought the colour ones with him.

Ok, so I get hired to go on a low budget Union commercial job. The PM tells me the equipment rate is only $500.00 , then she proceeds to tell me they have 3 Alexas, I let her know that to provide timecode and audio to all 3 cameras the equipment side of the budget would have to be increased $300.00 more. She declines and says the editors can work with what they get from a dummy slate and that she wants to save the money. I show up , jam sync all 3 cameras ANYWAY. and off we go. the next day I get a call that the editorial post house is extremely upset that 2 of the cameras dont have audio feeds. I reminded her of her choice not to budget for mo…

I have had the pleasure n frustration of teaching others the art of sound recording for film. It is a long process that really only makes sense when one does it a few million times. Doing is learning. When I first started learning,(still learning), the craft, I had an advantage that most of the new generation does not. We had dailies. Shoot all day and on the following day at lunch or after work we saw n heard our work projected to a large screen and over a simi nice sound system. What a great way to learn what worked or didn't. Not just the sound. Picture, acting, story telling, directing, all of it. Better than any film school for learning all aspects of the craft. So …

Frances and I just did yet another oddball job, this one for a comedy website on the elections called "Left vs. Right" (http://www.leftvsright.com/). For many reasons too tedious to go into (but fully understood by everyone here) we ended up booming the whole deal, following the (very funny) actors as they improv-ed their bits in front of a (wait for it....) green screen. (Let's just say that "interactive" industry people have different ideas of audio-picture aesthetics than movie people.) After much tantruming I got a boom op, but only one, so I became the 2nd boom, while mixing the show as well. Hence the first picture ("view from penthouse") of the wacky bag rig w…

Hey guys I would like to talk to everyone about the shoot I am on. I apologize in advance for turning this great forum into a shoulder for me to cry on, so to speak, but I wanted to reach out to others who have possibly...and probably...experience some of the same things as me. I am currently working on an Indy production in the Philly suburbs. Its a teen love triangle drama, with some sensitive and emotional material, as most movies do. I always try to handle myself in a professional manner, follow set etiquette, respect the jobs of other crew members, as well as the personal space of the actors. This job, in particular, I have found opposition at every turn …
