Buenos Noches Ernesto. Welcome to jwsound. What a resume you have. In Hollywood we are put in boxes and get to do one thing only. Others here @jw do like you and wear many hats. We are a vast community here. I congratulate you on getting Walter Murch to visit your school. He is the man. I try to get many to read his books and articles. Here's the view from my position last night for a multicam doco shoot of a performance by Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser at a venue in Santa Cruz CA. Great show, crowd went nuts during the encore. The producer had wanted me to cover both doco/verite audio and music recording for the all-day shoot, but she not only listened to my concerns about that and hired a 2nd sound person (Ray Day) to do the doco stuff, she rented good cameras (HDX900), Lockits for all and let me roll my multitrack rig and deliver as files, with the cameras free and untethered to anything. Really nice change from either miles of audio/genlock/TC/video cabling or dinky-cams that can only be appro…

I was saddened to hear that John Coffey passed away recently. I’m sure that others who knew him better than I will have already heard this news, but I thought this sound community should know of his passing. His “ little shop that could “ up on Cahuenga here in LA was my first introduction to professional location sound equipment. He would let you walk out of there with thousands of dollars of gear on just a handshake. John would give you his home phone number in case you needed anything after hours or on weekends. Crazy way to run a business, but he made me a loyal customer up until the day he sold the place to Glen Trew. Here’s hoping you’re at peace, John. …

Being out of the loop so to speak, is anyone on the forum working right now? I am curious about those 40 or so (?) "Independently Produced" projects that SAG/AFTRA and WGA have let continue on during the strike, along with IATSE notice that it was "legal" for members to not cross the picket lines. How about in locales other that the USA? What's up in the real world? Inquiring minds want to know. D.

That's business. But still sad. Rycote: Small factory behind big TV shows closes down A small factory in Gloucestershire that pioneered sound recording technology for the film and TV industry has been closed, with the loss of 22 jobs. For over 50 years, Rycote in Stroud made windshields for microphones used all over the world. But its parent company said the factory was "no longer fit for purpose". Production has been moved to Leicestershire. Rest of the story, with a few pictures here: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-gloucestershire-65687450

I was talking with a friend about how hard it might be to restore a Wurlitzer electric piano, as one does, and that led to a chain of thoughts that led to a Google search that brought up this blast from the past. From Re/p, Sept 1970 (on that site Al McGuire discovered). https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Audio/Archive-Recording-Engineer/70s/Recording-1970-09.pdf Because of this mic and the tape recorder mod, Brad Miller sent Carl each Original Master Recording LP as they were released. I just dig that sort of thing...

From HowSound on Transom.org (a great podcast and site, that describes itself as, "A Showcase and Workshop for New Public Radio"). A Sonic Conjuring (Rerun) by Rob Rosenthal | 11.09.21 Take a look at the photo above, the two strips of film from the collection at the Imperial War Museum in London. They document the sound of Armistice Day, the end of World War I, and the silencing of artillery. On the left, the war at full tilt a minute before the end of the war. On the right, peace — a minute after the end of the war. The juxtaposition is startling. Part of the film is missing, though. A full two minutes documenting t…

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — The howling gale forces winds, whipped up by a potent atmospheric river, whistled through the railing grates of the Golden Gate Bridge, creating an eerie sound track for the storm as it ripped through the San Francisco Bay Area. [snip] Is it a hum? A ghostly wail? A Brian Eno-style soundtrack for the world’s most beautiful bridge? The noise is not easy to describe. Howell had been chasing the source since April. Rest of the story: https://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2021/10/24/video-howling-atmospheric-river-winds-making-golden-gate-bridge-sing/ And from yesterday's storm:

I knew when I used a Nagra IV and had it monitoring off the playback head if I tried to slate a scene or a head of a new roll I couldn't concentrate. A real non-leathal weapon.
