An interview with the director in today's edition of The Guardian: Making Waves: behind a fascinating documentary about movie sound Professor and director Midge Costin talks about her ear-opening new film that aims to remind audiences just how much work goes into cinematic sound Midge Costin has had it with people forgetting the difference between sound editing and sound mixing every time the Oscars roll around. Once and for all: “Sound mixing brings all the elements together, all the various recorded tracks, and synthesizes them into one soundscape. Editing covers voice, music, effects, ADR – how do they sound?” So, that should be the end of …

Interesting... WAV audio files are now being used to hide malicious code Steganography malware trend moving from PNG and JPG to WAV files. [a couple excerpts] The technique is known as steganography -- the art of hiding information in plain sight, in another data medium. The first of these two new malware campaigns abusing WAV files was reported back in June. Symantec security researchers said they spotted a Russian cyber-espionage group known as Waterbug (or Turla) using WAV files to hide and transfer malicious code from their server to already-infected victims. The second malware campaign was spotted this month by BlackBerry …

It is with great sadness that I report the passing away of Rene Borisewitz last week. Rene was Simon Kaye's maintenance engineer for many feature films until he became a successful sound mixer in his own right. He gave me a place on my first feature film. He is survived by his wife Ulla. His cremation service is on Saturday 5th October 2019 at 10.45 at the Golders Green Crematorium (West Chapel) [Hoop Lane, Golders Green, NW11 7NL] and there will be be a celebration of Rene's life afterwards at The Old Bull & Bush, North End Road NW3 7HE from 12:15.

Yes, it's MXL. And yes it's Guitar Center. So I'm not buying one. But I'm still surprised to see a ribbon mic, even a probably crappy one, available for so cheap... Breathless description lifted from GC's website: MXL R80 Ribbon Microphone Go ahead... get loud. Designed as a studio go-to mic for daily recording, the MXL R80 is built to last inside and outside. MXL has built modern ribbon elements into the R80 microphone. It has a high SPL capacity, making it suitable for guitar cabinets and horns. The figure 8 polar pattern lets sound roll in from both sides of the mic to create a ... If you care, the deal is availabl…

Hey Everyone, A month or so ago, Mark Farag (another member of the forum) and I launched a podcast called Skeleton Crew. It features conversations with key crew members that would be present on most film sets. Episode 3 features Rachel Cameron, an esteemed member of this forum as well, discussing the role of sound mixer. We had a great time chatting with her and thought some of you would enjoy it as well. The whole first season (6 episodes) is available on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts and most other fine podcast apps. - Joseph Boyle

That Tremolux must have sounded great! And a 2X12 Bassman would be cool! What ever you do, don't click this link: https://reverb.com/marketplace?query=Bassman 2x12 Instead, buy local. Have you (or any of you) checked out Milkman Sound in San Francisco? Not Fender clones, but Fender inspired. https://milkmansound.com

I am working on a movie right now and had a tight fitting cocktail dress on a young lady Saturday night. I hate those things. Wardrobe wants to do the placement because I can not get to it with the dress zipped up. I finally gave her a hide a mic bra clip and it still had clothing rub. I hate to be defeated over this and the rest of the crew just shrugs at the issue. I can tell some appreciate my tenacity and some don't. Any suggestions.

Just curious. I play an AV65 jazzmaster & a 2003 AVRI jaguar through both a ‘62 and a ‘64 Showman (with D130fs of course) and a ‘63 reverb tank. (I’ve also got a ‘62 Twin but no place to really use it at the moment haha!) I love spring reverb and surf. My mom grew up in the Bronx and was 19 in 1960 when surf started in Southern CA, and she never heard surf on the radio! So sad. I grew up in Hawaii (mid 70s - 80s) and also never heard surf on the radio. Lots of you are in Southern CA and I am super jealous! They just had a three day surf festival around LA this past weekend. I’d say surf is a style more than a genre, because let’s face it…

Article in today's NYTimes about FBI trying to get info on some Indonesian "producers" who solicit US film people - above and below the line - to work on a gig there. Apparently they're faking everything very wel and research their victims, eventually getting the victim to front money for the trip and then shell out fees and inflated exchanges to locals who are in on the deal. Underlying FBI press release here, dated 7/15. They want to hear from anyone who's been contacted by the scammers. I suspect experienced soundies who have work here won't be tempted. But I also know that's not everybody on JWSound.

A Mystery Frequency Disrupted Car Fobs in an Ohio City, and Now Residents Know Why It sounded like something from an episode of “The X-Files”: Starting a few weeks ago, in a suburban neighborhood a few miles from a NASA research center in Ohio, garage door openers and car key fobs mysteriously stopped working. Garage door repair people, local ham radio enthusiasts and other volunteer investigators descended on the neighborhood with various meters. Everyone agreed that something powerful was interfering with the radio frequency that many fobs rely on, but no one could identify the source. Rest of the story, about a five-minute read: https:…

Hello, Just wondering what the best places are for someone to follow what will go down at NAB this year without being there. I would love a livestream type of thing but if you also know youtube channels or other channels that put the content out pretty quick I'd love to know Thanks, Mattia.

New York Times posts a photo today, to illustrate an article on new threats of government shutdown... I get why the capitol, and the boom mic could certainly suggest "news"... but why a wind screen? It seems like there's nothing moving in Washington these days, no matter what your political leanings, and probably not even the air...

This story covers the tech-investment angle, but huh... In my day were were lucky to rehearse in a warehouse with a leaky roof... 🙂 So I guess these are fancy(ish) rehearsal spaces? Anyone here know anything about these? Seem like an idea that could work, or taking the whole "gig economy" trope too literally and too far? Pirate Studios raises $20M from Talis Capital for its ‘self-service’ tech-enabled music studios [snip] The new funding will enable Pirate Studios to continue to expand across the U.K., Germany and the U.S., where it has been building what the startup describes as a community of musicians, DJs, producers and podcasters who need access …
