Here's the view from my position last night for a multicam doco shoot of a performance by Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser at a venue in Santa Cruz CA. Great show, crowd went nuts during the encore. The producer had wanted me to cover both doco/verite audio and music recording for the all-day shoot, but she not only listened to my concerns about that and hired a 2nd sound person (Ray Day) to do the doco stuff, she rented good cameras (HDX900), Lockits for all and let me roll my multitrack rig and deliver as files, with the cameras free and untethered to anything. Really nice change from either miles of audio/genlock/TC/video cabling or dinky-cams that can only be appro…

Buenos Noches Ernesto. Welcome to jwsound. What a resume you have. In Hollywood we are put in boxes and get to do one thing only. Others here @jw do like you and wear many hats. We are a vast community here. I congratulate you on getting Walter Murch to visit your school. He is the man. I try to get many to read his books and articles. Don't worry about your english skills, most all of us need to improve. Thanks for introducing yourself to the group. CrewC

Marydixie n I are shooting a comercial in Altadena today. our director did show up and unlike Jeff we are still are here and working. It's cool though, good people all around n we are having a lot of laugh's. I finally finished cutting Don Coufals boom class that I shot way back in Aug... I hope to have it posted on the 695 site very soon. Mucho good stuff Don spells out in his own style and I think new and old sound people can enjoy and learn from it. It's a bit over an hour long, but I still enjoy it even after cutting it, not always the case after working on a project. By the way, this is the most words Don has ever spoken at one time, a personal best so enjoy. CrewC

I was hired last minute to do some work with a local crewing company today. As per usual, they wanted me to use their kit. It's in wretched condition with a Shure fp 32 paired with an intermittent PSC cable, blown MDR-7506's, busted ass boom with broken internal coil, Softie slipping off the shotgun on an over sized shock mount and a pain in the ass Porta Brace strap that has been so worn down it resembles dental floss more than it does a proper harness. I have used their kit before so I knew what to expect. Busted ass equipment aside, they are good people. I usually bring my own boom setup anyway. The one thing they have going for them, equipment wise, are Lectros…

A Mystery Frequency Disrupted Car Fobs in an Ohio City, and Now Residents Know Why It sounded like something from an episode of “The X-Files”: Starting a few weeks ago, in a suburban neighborhood a few miles from a NASA research center in Ohio, garage door openers and car key fobs mysteriously stopped working. Garage door repair people, local ham radio enthusiasts and other volunteer investigators descended on the neighborhood with various meters. Everyone agreed that something powerful was interfering with the radio frequency that many fobs rely on, but no one could identify the source. Rest of the story, about a five-minute read: https:…

Shame on any of the Canadian IATSE members who allowed Stuart Townsend to shoot his $10M movie about the WTO protests without a union contract. And hurray for the members of IATSE Local #488, Studio Mechanics of the Pacific Nortwest who risk their jobs to force the production to sign a contract before they would be allowed to shoot in Seattle. Why did anyone think that a movie about the WTO protests in Seattle would be allowed to shoot in Seattle without a union contract? Now that IS arrogent! Great job to the members of IATSE Local #488 and their negotiating team. A contract was signed last night. D.

For you Euro members, a film I worked on (the USA parts) about counter-tenor Philippe Jaroussky for France2 will air Dec. 10. The trailer looks and sounds good I think, if anyone sees the film I'd love to hear how the mix is overall. phil p

My Boom Operator, Jeff Erdmann put this song together with Garageband during the WGA Strike Hiatus. You'll all get a kick out of it! I can't upload it to this site (file is too large) so play it or download it here: http://www.macjams.com/song/40791 If you like it - drop him a line and tell him Jeff Erdmann <jeffsoundman@yahoo.com> Enjoy, RL

I just had a conversation with an editor/friend of mine about these low-budget "Labor of Love" projects. Without even thinking, I blurted out... The problem with these Labor of Love projects is: it's OUR labor and THEIR love! So that's another T-shirt. As god is my witness, I'm going to use this line, the next time I get into a conversation with one of these producers...

Everyone may have seen this already, but I love how the commercial is heralding this remarkable state-of-the-art "transportable" cellular telephone. Someone should show this commercial to Siri and she what she thinks. http://youtu.be/DXcImcc3RDw

I got an email from the post supervisor on the TV Pilot I did. She says: "Hi Jeff, Just wanted to pass onto you that both the sound supervisor and the post sound mixers commented on what a great job you did for our pilot 'Untitled Goldberg/Gordon Project.' Your excellent work made our jobs a lot easier through the entire process. Thank you again for your diligence and your hard work. I hope to work with you again in the future. All the best, Fritzi" I was pleased to hear from the production as a follow up. I think we did an okay job, not great, but I am sure they have had to deal with a lot worse. Thank you to all those here who helped me with advice a…

OK, I know I've committed the ultimate act of heresy by going to see a silent movie, but I just had to see what all the fuss was about. While the film is a wonderful paene to the days of the silents, I have to say that I was just a bit disappointed by the cinematography. While it was gratifying to see them stay true to the original Academy aspect ratio, the black & white image doesn't hold a candle to the real deal. All in all, though, a very nicely conceived movie. As always, the dog steals the show, but the acting is pretty good too! (as is the score, even though he borrowed from Bernard Herrmann) Viewed it in digital at the Arclight cinema. Clean presenta…

I start a show on Monday, TV PILOT. They have a "capture van", filled with computers, that will record all the image and audio. 2 Grass Valley cameras ( that record nothing, all info goes to the "capture Van") are connected to a DIT, and this "capture van". They have 17 CAST MEMBERS. I am sending 8 tracks digital audio to the truck, time code back to me, and 2 video back to me as well. All on cat two (2) 5 cable. I was told " BE READY TO MOVE QUICK, WE ARE GOING TO RUN AND GUN" I think these morons are going to shoot "wide and tight", because the producer who hired me will not say they are not. Coleman "these people are on the cutting edge of something..." …

That's business. But still sad. Rycote: Small factory behind big TV shows closes down A small factory in Gloucestershire that pioneered sound recording technology for the film and TV industry has been closed, with the loss of 22 jobs. For over 50 years, Rycote in Stroud made windshields for microphones used all over the world. But its parent company said the factory was "no longer fit for purpose". Production has been moved to Leicestershire. Rest of the story, with a few pictures here: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-gloucestershire-65687450
