My wife and I saw a movie this weekend that has slipped under the radar. Remember Renny Harlin? Used to be married to Geena Davis and directed Sly Stallone and some other 80s 90s icons before a couple of his movies tanked in a big way? (I remember some sort of pirate movie with Geena Davis that decelerated his career) He helmed this film, 12 rounds, and although it will never raise any thespian appreciation eyebrows, boy what a great action movie. The visuals are stunning, no pun intended, and the sound is awesome. A very stressful, exciting, entertaining two hours. Check it out if that's your thing. Great sound design and dialogue recording. IMO. MIck

Yesterday was our shoot at the Justin Bieber concert (in Oakland), all behind the scenes. I spent most of the day sitting in hallway outside his dressing room in my full bag rig, everything on, swapping batteries to a charger on my cart, as we waited for himself to give us shards of time in which to shoot the little promo pieces my client needed for their product tie-in. The tour is, as you might expect, the full-boat mega pop 2010 edition--all the bells and whistles. Interesting for me--I hadn't been around this kind of thing in a long time, and had forgotten the bigness of it all. Two moments: 1: JB comes tearing out of his dressing room on a Segway scooter, and we…

I saw two movies recently, and although my opinion of them as movies is immaterial, I saw that they were both mixed by my old friend Peter Devlin and that second unit on both films was mixed by our posting colleague Phillip Palmer. Star Trek sounded great, and the mix was very much in tune with the pace and energy of the film. I spoke to Peter about it and although he had some wardrobe issues to deal with, the dialogue was crisp and very legible, fitting in harmoniously with the music and FX. Peter and Phillip's other film was Angels and Demons, a movie that was spoiled for me by the occasional merge of the dialogue into a morass of music and FX rendering some scenes u…

This was the worst movie I've seen in a very long time. Not because of it's subject matter whatsoever. It sounded absolutely terrible and the shooter couldn't seem to keep the camera steady on a lock down interview. If I ever teach a class this will be one of the films I use on what not to do with lavs and only lavs. There was obviously no sound guy attached to this film and there is no usage of a boom throughout. I met Dinesh D'Souza a few times, and although an interesting guy, he should be ashamed of letting this kind of negligence fly. What is your opinion of the film? This may belong in the politics section either way.

Happy New Year to my Brothers, and Sisters, Friends and even Foe's. So far so good. Can't be worse than 2017 can it? Only if we let it. Focus on the love you can bring to each day. We had our now 4th annual Atlanta Sound Mixer Barbecue Saturday at mine and Kathy's house. We had sound friends from all over the country join us as well as friends from most of our vendors and manufacturers. We roasted two pigs and Lectrosonics brought brisket and smoked chicken. Gotham and PSC provided deserts, Trew and Zaxcom provide brew. Everyone was very generous with all of the food that was brought.

I thought I share a bit of my work with you guys: I was on a German TV production in France last year. We had a scene with 5 characters in a 5:40minutes all done in one steadicam shot. Jump to minute 17:15 - 22:54. It was done on my side with the great tool of Zaxcom´s TRX recordings and remixing. I was getting poor reception on one of the actors. My position was inside the building, left side of the TV / fridge in the kitchen (21:07min). Was great fun and I´m glad they didn´t cut the scene with the additional material we were shooting for safety. Something went wrong with the upload on youtube (it´s all speed up a bit, sounds a bit pitched) but you`ll get …
