Watched the BAFTA's tonight, and was pleasantly surprised to hear Ethan Cohen thank his sound team in his acceptance speech. Don't hear that every day. Watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYGJ-IQ6HOM

Probably just a stoopid question here from an ignorant brit, but - does anyone know the origin of the term 'Barney', as in the piece of padded crusty leather (well, sometimes leather - more often than not these days they don't have one, so use the 1st AC's coat) that they put over the camera to keep the noise in, as it were. The favourite story I heard so far was that in the early days of shooting sync sound they used horses barn blankets, or Barneys, to throw over the camera and reduce the noise coming from it. Sounds reasonable to me, but does anyone have any other ideas? Kindest regards to all, Simon B

Just a reminder for Local 695 members that tomorrow (Friday) or Saturday are the last chance to send in ballots for ratification of the new Basic Contract. That's the one with a 3% rate increase and 10% bump in pension for active participants. You may think that your one vote doesn't count for much... but it does. And in a larger sense, just the fact that you voted counts, too. The producers watch these things closely and when the vote count gets lower from year to year, they interpret that as being a sign that a disengaged membership is a membership ripe for exploitation at the next negotiations. Don't let that happen. Drop your postage-paid ballot in the mail as s…

Ludwig Koch and the Music of Nature How a boyhood hobby led to pioneering recording of the natural world Radio historian Sean Street tells the story of Ludwig Koch, who started recording sounds and voices in the 1880s when he was still a child. In 1936, Koch fled Nazi Germany and his recordings were later acquired by the BBC. His collection established the BBC's library of natural history sounds and he became a household name as a nature broadcaster. Koch's distinct German accent and eccentric location recordings became so well known that he was parodied by Peter Sellers. Koch's recording of a Parisian street performer and the famous actor's take on it c…

Behind The Scenes Bevelry Hills Nannies Los Angeles, CA - October 2012 On September 4th 2012, ABC Family Television (in conjunction with Evolution Media) aired Beverly Hills Nannies: Nannies Tell All, a reunion of the popular reality show that focuses on a group of young nannies working for the higher-class wealthy in the world's most unreal neighborhood. Keeping up with the action meant having a substantial number of wireless microphone systems that offered the sound quality, flexibility, and dropout free performance necessary to capture it all. That’s precisely why LA-based Production Sound Mixer Scott Jason Farr, CAS, relied on an assortment of transmitt…

This is a remarkable shot where somebody stuck a little pocket-sized camera on the giant 3D Steadicam rig on the final shot of Martin Scorsese's Hugo. I'm curious about the boom setup used; looks to me like they're using two mikes together, maybe a CMIT and a 641, not quite sure. I'm curious how many people use this technique (or if I'm just confused). [Not sure why the embed code isn't working, but that link will still get you there.]

I'm sure we've all seen it happen, or maybe it happened to you. It's usually done in good spirit and although the newbie may have been a little embarrassed at the time, in the end you can usually have a good laugh about it. So let's hear some ! I remember seeing a young PA run around a whole afternoon looking for a the black and white video tapes. Apparently the cameraman had convinced him that he had only brought the colour ones with him.

This is what I go through everyday now on this site, often up to 10 spam-bot registrations waiting for approval. There is no way I am going to approve a member whose email address is "pornstarlickmyass @ geemail.ru". So, I have to just reject all these but I can't find a way to stop them all together except to suspend the online registration procedure. It is really just annoying for me since I have stopped anyone from actually signing up and posting. - Jeff Wexler

Hi Guys, I've been occupied with personal, family and health concerns recently and as I'm no longer on "CSI" (looking for a job in January if anyone has a lead!) I've decided to write a book. I'd like to solicit contributions and input from anyone who posts here, mixers, pre and post, boomers, utility sound, anyone who has an opinion and professional experience with the equipment we use and any anecdotal stuff that would help educate and entertain prospective readers of this particular subject. I'll be more specific about individual subject matter once I see what kind of response this generates and who is willing to share, but I look forward to hearing from anyone wil…

Before the current hiatus I knew I had to find a new boom operator as Kenny was going to mix "11th Hour". I posted my requirements in the relative section here at Jeff's site and had numerous replies, some from direct referrals from guys here and some from the applicants themselves, all of which were of such a high standard I was genuinely surprised. I'd like to publicly thank the talented guys that showed up to our impromptu "interview" at Coffey's and how much I enjoyed the anecdotes and experience they all brought. I chose to work with Dennis Fuller who has had a varied career and is going to be a great addition to our show as would all the other boom operators, but I…

Just was leafing through the latest HD Video Pro magazine and hit the section called Cine Sound Pro. with an article on Boom Mic Techniques. Please note the illustration on the cover and later in the article. The boom man has a shotgun mic aimed at least 6 feet above what the camera is shooting. If pointing at a person for dialogue you would never have the boom on the pole at the angle it is illustrated.... Maybe if they were doing an article on boom techniques they would have an illustrator that knows something about booming. Also the hanging cable from the boom pole is in danger of getting in the shot or at least getting in the way of the cameraman.

Over the last two years I have had a steady date with a shooter who does mostly news and some corporate stuff. His health has become so bad that I end up carrying the water for the whole shoot. I am in my mid 60's and carrying heavy sand bags and setting up all the lights while he sits has just become too much. I booked a movie this month because I needed a change and some change for taxes. Needles to say I am getting the brunt of his resentment. Lots of whining to other professionals about how I am costing him work. I love the crew on this movie and hope that I can go this directing as I finish my career. I bought a used 664 last November just to dodge some t…

What are the restrictions about bringing gear into the NAB Show? I'd like to bring in a few things (mixer, recorder, mic, etc.) to "size things up" and see if, say, that new bag really does hold an SD552 with extra equipment. It'd also to be able to test new stuff with the gear you're going to be using it with. I'd expect them to tag or sticker anything brought in but do they prohibit bringing certain things into the exhibit halls?
