Here's the view from my position last night for a multicam doco shoot of a performance by Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser at a venue in Santa Cruz CA. Great show, crowd went nuts during the encore. The producer had wanted me to cover both doco/verite audio and music recording for the all-day shoot, but she not only listened to my concerns about that and hired a 2nd sound person (Ray Day) to do the doco stuff, she rented good cameras (HDX900), Lockits for all and let me roll my multitrack rig and deliver as files, with the cameras free and untethered to anything. Really nice change from either miles of audio/genlock/TC/video cabling or dinky-cams that can only be appro…

Buenos Noches Ernesto. Welcome to jwsound. What a resume you have. In Hollywood we are put in boxes and get to do one thing only. Others here @jw do like you and wear many hats. We are a vast community here. I congratulate you on getting Walter Murch to visit your school. He is the man. I try to get many to read his books and articles. Don't worry about your english skills, most all of us need to improve. Thanks for introducing yourself to the group. CrewC

Sitting under a pop up today, in the pouring rain at Warner Ranch when a message from Christian Holm popped up on my email with a good idea, or so I thought. He asked me to start this because he feels his command of the english is a bit weak. He probably asked the wrong guy to do this as my english is dodgy at best. But... The idea is like "Who I am today", but discussing the music in your life as a window to ones personality and how it influenced you in any way shape or form. I hope I am expressing his idea right. Why not, seems fun enough for a rainy day in Hollywood. Music has always been a main ingredient and love in my life. My father loved the big bands and swin…

Since people die everyday in the course of life and many of us feel compelled to comment on those who have passed, I thought a thread/topic to cover this might be useful to the group. RVD mentioned the group of 3 concept of famous folks dying in 3's and so it seems true again as Dennis Hopper is about to ride off to the other side. What a career. A fiction writer couldn't make up the life of Mr Hopper. Well done Dennis. RIP CrewC

Hey guys I would like to talk to everyone about the shoot I am on. I apologize in advance for turning this great forum into a shoulder for me to cry on, so to speak, but I wanted to reach out to others who have possibly...and probably...experience some of the same things as me. I am currently working on an Indy production in the Philly suburbs. Its a teen love triangle drama, with some sensitive and emotional material, as most movies do. I always try to handle myself in a professional manner, follow set etiquette, respect the jobs of other crew members, as well as the personal space of the actors. This job, in particular, I have found opposition at every turn …

I found an interesting. (to me) video today at boingboing that I thought I would share and didn't know where to post it so I thought I would start WTF as a place to post the random, weird, and off subjects that we find interesting. This is an old clip from 63 Steve Allen Show with Frank Zappa playing the bicycle. http://afacemeltingblogofstaggeringriffage.blogspot.com/2009/06/frank-zappa-plays-bicycle-on-steve.html Enjoy or not. This may well be an old timer thing. CrewC

I caught Eric Toline's very funny line elsewhere, and wanted to add it to my list of "sound department T-shirts." One of these days, I'll interest somebody in making these! Some of these shirts are ones I've actually seen, but couldn't locate a source to buy them from. No MOS! (already a cap from Pro Sound NYC) No Subs! (already a shirt from Lectrosonics) When you talk my ears bleed a little! Sound is speeding! If my headphones are on I can't hear you! Don't talk to me if the red light is on! SOUND DEPARTMENT If you hear it we can record it. We'll fix it in post. Oh, shit -- we are in post! (inspired by a real…

I just finished playing drums by myself, which is not as much fun as playing music with others, but more fun than not playing at all. Last week I was working with Gary Gossett who is a drummer as well. Hunter Crowley is also a drummer. Just wondering how many other sound folks played drums? I know some play other instruments, like Mick Fowler, he plays keyboards and I am sure others play or did play guitar and bass. Did doing so figure into your ending up in sound? If so then how much? Myself, I see it all related to my growing up in Orange County in the 50's n 60's when garage bands were a huge fad like hot rods and surfing. We were in tune with it all and the music of t…

Stage hopping...... 1 2 3 4 5

One of my favorite things about working in Hollywood is stage hopping. When I work on any of the lots, it is a blast to visit other mixers, boom ops, even video assist monkeys on the other stages. Today I had lunch with Bruce Perlman and Ron Sherouse, (sorry if I slaughtered his last name), two great guys. Last time I was here 3 weeks ago I got to see Jim Stuebe and his gang. Any time I am at Universal I swing by and see Mick when time permits. Catching up with your peers is so much fun even though it is over way too soon. No real point I'm making here other than it makes my day when I do..... Not much work and a bunch of free time today. CrewC

Im using the Deva V and I absolutely love it for recording sound. BUT the timecode is absoluely useless!!!!!!!!!!!!! Im working on a three arri alexa drama and im getting flagged by the edit every day for a 1-2 frame slip. Unfortunately the frame delay is inconsistent, so everything has to be manually synced. The shoot is at 23.976 and so is the deva. Im using an Ambient clockit controller to tune all cameras to the deva's oscillating crystal. I then pump timecode to all three cameras, making sure to change the setting to internal sync after doing so. I then feed the timecode directly into the deva which is set to continuos jam. But something is caus…

I was sitting next to a nutritionist on a plane last night. He noticed my ear plugs and said it was good to see a young person taking care of his ears. After telling him I was a sound engineer he began to tell me ways to maintain hearing health. Niacin (B3) is a vasodilator and is especially good for the capillaries in the head, ears and cochlea, and may reduce the risk of tinitus. Ginkgo is also a good supplement to take. Thought I would pass on the info to you soundies, if you didn't know it already. To your health, Ben

Hi all. . . It's been a lot of fun reading what some of you folks are saying about poor little ol' me here in Kansas and my film-dreams-coming-true project. I just wanted to correct a few misconceptions. Someone mentioned that we were using a 416 and figured "we'd get what we are paying for" (in other words, not much). In point of fact, the audio we are getting is just stupendous on this shoot. Our sound mixer, Jithu, was an electrical engineer before switching to sound design and now has two degrees in sound design (including an MFA). He knows what he is doing, and with a great young boom operator (a wonderful young man by the name of Adam), we're getting ever…

A Cinematographer emailed me via my website for a film job flat rate $150.00 a day with gear so here was my response: $150.00 is slave wage for a sound mixer as a "Professional Cinematographer " you should know better than that. Gear rental for your project should be $300.00 by itself. Then his answer: That was uncalled for. I did not list the project as HGTV, NBC or any other of the big companies who can pay up to $750.oo per day for Sound Mixers with gear. Its an INDEPENDENT with a LOW BUDGET. 150.00 equals $15.00 per hour for a 10 hour shoot. Thats better than nothing if there is no work? No? Enough said! Best wishes, I love what pe…

Not to divert our perverted interest : ) in Roman Polanski and lose focus of that important subject, but have you ever wished you could of worked on a film, or recorded a scene from the past? I have always had these thoughts ever since I got into film school and worked in the 'Biz'. Any John Ford western makes me wish I was the Boom Man. I would loved to of been on the Warner lot and recorded 'Casablanca' or 'To Have and Have Not'. All the great Voices and Performances that have been captured by others that I wish had been mine to record. It would be tough to choose, but I will try to narrow it down to 3. "The Searchers" would be #1 because of the talent involved and lo…

I wondered if it might be worth starting a thread where we could include many or all of the new kit announcements that are made or are about to be made at NAB 2015? I couldn't help but notice that Audio Ltd website home page is sporting somewhat of a tease ;-) Take a look at www.audioltd.com Discuss? Kindest, Simon B

Thanks to Robert Kennedy of Coffey Sound, I'm testing a pair of the miniature supercardioid DPA 4098-BM's. Now known to be a 4081 I had a quick listen to one of them about a week ago and was blown away. First the quality of the small microphone was very close to a Schoeps 441. The size makes it ideal for concealment or as a plant microphone. In fact my real test will be in a Corvette, with two actors and I'll plant them off the visors. Their size is a distinct advantage over my preferred choice of a pair of Schoeps, either with a GVC or a collette cable. It is getting much more difficult to hide good sounding mics with the hand held camera craze inside an auto…

After watching that hilarious iPhone vs. EVO "Xtranormal" CG cartoon this past week, I thought I'd try my hand at making one. The digital voices aren't great, and the animation ain't exactly Pixar, but it sorta/kinda works and gets the point across. Anybody who's worked in the low-budget indie film business has dealt with this kind of situation before: http://www.xtranormal.com/watch/6807847/ "It has 4K!" --Marc W.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/04/11/roar-the-most-dangerous-movie-ever-made.html?via=desktop&source=facebook I had the dubious honor of working on Roar. So did Courtney Goodin. I left after 3 weeks when Noel Marshal was bit through the hand. I was smart enough to know I didn't want to see anyone die or die myself. CrewC
