Just curious. I play an AV65 jazzmaster & a 2003 AVRI jaguar through both a ‘62 and a ‘64 Showman (with D130fs of course) and a ‘63 reverb tank. (I’ve also got a ‘62 Twin but no place to really use it at the moment haha!) I love spring reverb and surf. My mom grew up in the Bronx and was 19 in 1960 when surf started in Southern CA, and she never heard surf on the radio! So sad. I grew up in Hawaii (mid 70s - 80s) and also never heard surf on the radio. Lots of you are in Southern CA and I am super jealous! They just had a three day surf festival around LA this past weekend. I’d say surf is a style more than a genre, because let’s face it…

Seems like an interesting question. What would you have done if you didn't go into this business? Since I started this I'll go first. I would have loved to open a bait & tackle shop on Nantucket or in the Bahamas. Don't laugh, I was a partner in one 30 years ago in N.Y. Eric

I'm a boom op and I recently wrapped a feature with Actor / Director Vincent Gallo called "The Funeral Director." We actually wrapped in early in February but I had to spend a while just unraveling my head from the experience and taking stock in what I learned as well as physically recuperating. I've been involved in alot of different production situations from student shoots to big budget studio features and I must say that I have never seen the production process play out in this way as it did on "The Funeral Director.". Without going into too much boring detail, the shoot started out normally with Vincent just playing the lead role. He was a little intense but it was c…

And what the hell does he mean by sound being made "more complicated" with the "proliferation of different types of television" that "affects a whole range of the population"? Just wondering where the Senator is. Did Eric put a hit out on him? One of his students poison him? Did Jeff ban him? I know I might be in the vast minority, but I enjoy Mike and his posts. I hope all is well Mike. One fan at least. CrewC

I was reflecting today on how much the equipment we use has evolved over the last twenty years or so, but more on the way in which we are almost obliged to embrace new technology with obsolescence built in. I was chatting with Glen Sanders a few days ago, lamenting the demise of my backup Deva 2 which only a few short years ago cost me $10k and which is already an electronic dinosaur. Back in the day the only upgrades we had to cope with were stereo and then time code nagras. Not nearly as big a deal as the upgrades currently available from Deva 2 to Deva 5 to Deva 5.8 to Deva Fusion, not to mention the advancements in SD machines and Cantar etc etc. I'm not saying of cou…

Today, I have experienced a nightmare in a cooking show. Wireless & Induction Kitchen Some sort info's: Wireless was Sennheiser G3 (626 MHz - 688 MHz) and G2 (780 MHz - 822 MHz). Lavaliers was DPA 4061. I know, 780 MHz - 822 MHz isn't very good here; but usable. The kitchen was without any extra furniture, so the whole system (below glass surface) was expsosed (not visible to camera of course). When the chef was turned on the kitchen for cooking; wireless went crazy, both of them. The sound was something like huge noise gate, plus extreme denoise, plus extreme compression. Like RF swallow into black hole (use your imagination). …

Red Work 1 2

2 weeks ago I said to Marydixie, "We haven't done much HD this year..". Bang. Pow. 5 of the last 8 days have been with the 'Red'. I have used them all. I like the Red as far as it goes. The files I heard off the camera were fine as far as i could tell. It wasn't a great system we saw n heard the shots from. The build was 17.something. I gave the camera line level off my Cooper 106. I mixed a little down to be safe. The Raw filess looked great. Money for productions of stuff like most commercials can be 'Tamed' with new work flows like this, but if you screw up, you screw the pooch as far as $$$$ goes. Time will tell. I know my Deva4 recordings are good. CrewC

Frances and I just did yet another oddball job, this one for a comedy website on the elections called "Left vs. Right" (http://www.leftvsright.com/). For many reasons too tedious to go into (but fully understood by everyone here) we ended up booming the whole deal, following the (very funny) actors as they improv-ed their bits in front of a (wait for it....) green screen. (Let's just say that "interactive" industry people have different ideas of audio-picture aesthetics than movie people.) After much tantruming I got a boom op, but only one, so I became the 2nd boom, while mixing the show as well. Hence the first picture ("view from penthouse") of the wacky bag rig w…

Our friend and fellow jwsound member Marc Wielage had a major health issue last week and I'm happy to report he is doing well. Feel free to offer Marc your best wishes. He is certainly one of our members I most admire. He is helpful, insightful, and fun to have here @jwsound. Speedy recovery Marc. I'm glad things are going well. Big fan. CrewC I apologize if this was already posted here. I didn't see it if it were. I left out the details because A, I don't know all the details, and B, it is Marc's story to tell.

Free Electricity 1 2 3 4

Well, not exactly free as we all know, but how wonderful it is to see these solar panels, pulled out of their boxes and as soon as exposed to the light are producing electricity. Our solar installation is complete except for all the necessary inspections, and we threw the switch once today just to watch the SCE meter run backwards. The panels are producing more electricity than we need so we were drawing ZERO from the utility company. In case anyone might be doing any armchair calculations, not all the panels are visible in this photo --- there are panels on the other side of the garage roof (reverse angle, of course, not too pretty to look at from the alley).

This was the worst movie I've seen in a very long time. Not because of it's subject matter whatsoever. It sounded absolutely terrible and the shooter couldn't seem to keep the camera steady on a lock down interview. If I ever teach a class this will be one of the films I use on what not to do with lavs and only lavs. There was obviously no sound guy attached to this film and there is no usage of a boom throughout. I met Dinesh D'Souza a few times, and although an interesting guy, he should be ashamed of letting this kind of negligence fly. What is your opinion of the film? This may belong in the politics section either way.

That's right, you read it correctly. In 1986 President Ronald Reagan signed the "Immigration Reform and Control Act" ("IRCA") to require employers to verify the identity and the eligibility of ALL employees hired to work in the United States. From that point on everyone had to fill in a required I-9 form before being legally employed. In those 24 years, think how many times those of us in the Los Angeles area film industry have filled in one of these I-9 forms? I would guess each of us has done so over a thousand times or more. However in the early 90's the CSTAF, the Contract Services Administration Fund asked each of us to personally go to the fund headquarters…

I remember a thread on what the Deva Sound Report looks like. I could not find the original thread and I also remember it became a debate over the 'quality' of the report written to disk between the Cantar and Deva? I've attached the file that is written to the folder of the Deva for observation purposes. It is a .CSV file which will open in Excel. You could create a specific Excel template file that you open it in, which could also include the show name, etc. etc. The information in the 'native' file has the necessary information that the sound editors would find useful. I 'write' the report on each DVD-RAM I mirror, as well as on my external archive FW drive that…
