"What kind of a peace do I mean and what kind of a peace do we seek? Not a Pax Americana enforced on the world by American weapons of war. Not the peace of the grave or the security of the slave. I am talking about genuine peace, the kind of peace that makes life on earth worth living, the kind that enables men and nations to grow and to hope and build a better life for their children–not merely peace for Americans but peace for all men and women–not merely peace in our time but peace in all time." - John F. Kennedy, June 10th, 1963

(From Deadline Hollywood) A coalition of broadcasters, wireless providers, and chip makers Thursday urged the FCC to adopt guidelines to minimize potential conflict between broadcasters and wireless companies as the agency strives to cope with rising stress on bandwidth. Because of ever-increasing demand for mobile devices, the FCC proposed in September that broadcasters voluntarily give up some of their allotted bandwidth in exchange for a share of the proceeds when that bandwidth is auctioned to wireless broadband providers. The National Association of Broadcasters initially worried that broadcasters in smaller markets would be more likely to give up spectrum than t…

A terrific Tennessean transplanted to Hollywood gentleman TV host who was a bit of an urban legend in California, Huell Howser, 67, who retired late last year, has moved on to his next assignment. As Local 695 has a contract with KCET, I had the good fortune to work with him on several occasions. " “Oh my gosh!” " http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/california-gold-huell-howser-dies-409336 (also covered in Daily Variety)

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — The howling gale forces winds, whipped up by a potent atmospheric river, whistled through the railing grates of the Golden Gate Bridge, creating an eerie sound track for the storm as it ripped through the San Francisco Bay Area. [snip] Is it a hum? A ghostly wail? A Brian Eno-style soundtrack for the world’s most beautiful bridge? The noise is not easy to describe. Howell had been chasing the source since April. Rest of the story: https://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2021/10/24/video-howling-atmospheric-river-winds-making-golden-gate-bridge-sing/ And from yesterday's storm:

Amazon introduces new feature to make dialogue in its TV shows intelligible It's an accessibility feature, sure, but muddled audio is a problem for everyone. SAMUEL AXON - 4/20/2023, 2:54 PM Amazon has introduced a new feature to Prime Video called Dialogue Boost. It's intended to isolate dialogue and make it louder relative to other sounds in streaming videos on the service. I used to try and welcome new members to JWSOUND, right after they had signed up, but I have stopped doing that for two reasons: one is that we have a whole lot more people signing up everyday, way more than we used to; and two, so many people sign up without using their own names (and in some instances, display names that don't even seem like names). It just doesn't seem right to welcome "headpooch23" (no offense to the real headpooch, you're not the only one). So, I would encourage, again, that people sign up their names. Fortunately, they often find the long running thread "Who I Am Today" and then we get to know who they are (and welcome them). I guess it's not re…

Today there are more 8 track recorders at non union rental houses in use for reality shows than have ever been sold to "established" sound mixers. 695 is fading out. or am I seeing a half empty glass being filled in Atlanta? wolf

From HowSound on Transom.org (a great podcast and site, that describes itself as, "A Showcase and Workshop for New Public Radio"). A Sonic Conjuring (Rerun) by Rob Rosenthal | 11.09.21 Take a look at the photo above, the two strips of film from the collection at the Imperial War Museum in London. They document the sound of Armistice Day, the end of World War I, and the silencing of artillery. On the left, the war at full tilt a minute before the end of the war. On the right, peace — a minute after the end of the war. The juxtaposition is startling. Part of the film is missing, though. A full two minutes documenting t…
