an excerpt from a ten page rant by one of our students, regarding the end of term screening of student projects. (each class votes for its top 3 favorites, which go into the screening, and then the audience votes for its favorite) This went to the department chair, who asked several of us involved in the preparation and presentation of the screening "Could one of you guys address this? ... I don't know what he is talking about. The full maker already wrote me a ten page letter... " In compiling the screenings, I created the Blu-ray DVD's we actually played at the screenings, and our HD projection system (Barko) is calibrated and meticulously maintained by our profess…

When a Producer calls and says " We only need you for a half day or a short day" Including travel time to me a short day means 5 hours or less or it is considered a full day rate. I just got a call today for a job that is "Two short days" according to the producer which he defined as 8 hour days when I politely corrected him and said a half day is 5 hours or less. He responded in an angry tone " In L.A a half day is 8 hours because we normally shoot a 16 hour day I know your in Ga so you may not know that or be unfamiliar with industry practices" His so called "half day" day rate was $250.00 per day including equipment and my reply "Being in Ga does not = Ignorant Than…

Clapper/Slate/ 1 2

Listening to Mark and Brian on the radio this morning on the way to work. "Ten approved" quiz. Question. What is the marker called that signals the start of a movie take? Answer: Clapper board I called them and didn't have time to stay on the phone long enough to be on the air but I am certain that "clapper board" is a distinctly English version of "slate". One of the DJs answered "slate" and was told it was incorrect. Just setting the record straight. And Mark was certain that the "clapper boards" were connected to the camera by blue tooth. Am I so far out of the loop that I missed this development in sync technology? Love those guys, they brighten my morning every day…

Neil Young's high-quality music service PonoMusic raised over $6 million via Kickstarter last year. Earlier today, the PonoMusic store launched, offering a selection of new and classic albums in high quality formats. The PonoPlayer is available to preorder online for February delivery, but The Verge reports reports that the player will be available at Fry's retail stores on Monday (January 12) for $399.

To start off the new year I am interested in getting suggestions from our members for improvements, enhancements, features and functions for our online community. I want JWSOUND to continue to grow, not just the size of our membership but the value and functionality of the site. I'm open to any suggestions or ideas --- I am not planning on abandoning the basic forum structure we have here with Invision Power Board software, but I'm sure there are things that could be changed, added or even linked to other web installations I have been experimenting with (for example, the WIKI REFERENCE test site I set up awhile ago, unfinished work for sure and may not ever be used). …

The party-planning committee has been hard at work organizing the annual RAMPS/JWSound party held during the NAB conference in Las Vegas. Well, most of us just made some posts to JWS. But Kathy Baca of Lectrosonics has been hard at work. Thanks Kathy! The annual RAMPS/JWSound Mixer Mixer will again take place on the Tuesday night of NAB. This year, that's April 8, 2014. We will gather at the Satay Thai Bistro, same place we've used the last few years: http://sataylasvegas.com Probable Start: 6:30pm Probably Stop: 9:30pm The Satay Grille will provide us with a buffet of Thai, Indonesian, and Malay dishes (probably including some vegetarian dishes)…

Does anyone have any information on the rumored writers' strike or is it just that, a rumor. I have heard of certain shows shooting extra episodes in case the season collapses later this year, but no solid info as yet. Regards Mick

Well I've made a big change with my cart from when I first built it in 2006. It's now all in the one 19ru SKB. I've ditched my Deva 5 and have gone Dante, with the Sound Devices Pix 970 and a JoeCo BBR64-Dante as my backup recorder. I still have another fail safe, Boom Recorder on the Mac-Mini. This photo is the first power up. There is a Pix 260i as a 'placeholder' until the 970 ships at the end of April. The back of the cart and a whole bunch of interconnecting cables are all gone. Here's how it used to look. The 19ru, with a 4ru on top.

There is no doubt in my mind actors are capable of tapping into a breadth of human dynamics most of us will never understand. I've lived with them, worked with them and rode the rollercoaster as a scripted character is brought to life. The issue at hand is who has the duty to enforce discipline on an individual failing to grasp who they really are and where they are … (out of touch with the present). Out of touch project members in any department are a threat to our safety and our future... These folks need to be disciplined. Friendships and politics sometimes keep that from happening. If you've worked on sets with drunks, drug addicts or people under th…

Forgive my rant but I'm sick of chasing down IFB's. Last night I got the usual "um, I left my IFB on the table over there" and "oh man, I'm sorry I don't remember where I left it" and " I gave it to that guy". So, going forward I will have a call sheet in front of me and as IFB's get handed out I will ask for the person's name and "check the IFB out to them" by putting the serial number next to their name. This way production knows who is responsible for each IFB handed out in case one ever gets lost/damaged. Just thought I'd vent and maybe share a good tip for anyone not doing something like this already. =)

I get off on new technology, especially when it makes my job more interesting -- fun even. My intel Mac-Mini that I use primarily for Boom Recorder as my backup is also a cool place to try stuff out. I've been experimenting with "Spaces" where I have the screen in a quadrant to observe four operations at once. The screenshot I've attached shows you what I'm doing. Quadrant 1 is Boom Recorder. Quadrant 2 is Studio Manager of my Yamaha 01V96 where I can see the mixer operating in real time. Quadrant 3 is the Fireface 400 mixer, where I can see the inputs and outputs of what's going to Boom Recorder. Quadrant 4 is the Camera's video transmitter - I get that through m…

I usually check in on r.a.m.p.s. Usenet group about once a week but I hadn't been back there for awhile. Today I did check in with r.a.m.p.s. and I was really shocked and saddened by what I read. I have posted an excerpt of a thread/conversation that was initially addressing the problem of spam on Usenet and r.a.m.p.s. in particular. from r.a.m.p.s.: I highly recommend posting at Jeff Wexler's forum http://jwsoundgroup.net/ These newsgroup services have no native search functionality and anyone can post messages, including spammers. http://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/the-man-who-recorded-tamed-and-then-sold-nature-sounds-to-america Yet another madman who recorded sounds! I love the part that talks about how silence makes people and animals nervous, because it indicates the presence of predators. Enjoy! Is it too early for resolutions? Well, I want to lose some weight, eat more healthily, work on my cardio fitness, and try to save some of my hard earned cash instead of buying more equipment... What is everyone else planning on doing? I might get some inspiration from others.

I have a Deva V, with a Deva 2 as backup. Two separate and independent systems. I have the capability of recording eight separate tracks if necessary. Yet...given the choice, which I am, I rarely even bother to activate tracks three through eight. I'd like to think it was because I think the "mixing" buck, at least the "dialogue mixing buck" stops here. I am a mixer. I spent many years in the U.K. and in Miami mixing music, contemporary and classical, recorded and live, for a living. I was a house producer at Phillips records (subsidiary of EMI) when I was in my late twenties, so I have a diverse background in audio mixing. Let me state unequivocally though, that my expe…

I was looking to post a review or POV about films I have seen. The search of jwsound turned up zero. Didn't we have a section once? Do we want one? I'm not against hearing others views about films out there. "The Artist" Mostly devoid of sound I found it to be as entertaining a movie as I can remember. Not the most original story idea ever written, but it is a very original way to tell that story and its time in a way modern films don't and I don't mean just the lack of sound. The actors are A + even working without one of their main tools. The emotional quotient is surprisingly high for such a fun film about silent film making and the end of that era. The look of th…
