Funny I just started diving into HAM stuff and for the first time realized that audio and radio were not technically on the same spectrum. I always remember those spectrum line images with light up to cosmic rays at one end and sound near the other, but after realizing radio freq's have a much longer wavelength but the frequency is technically higher really messed me up for awhile. Now that I understand that radio is a propagation in relation to light and not in an air medium in regards to frequency, what is the highest audio type frequency that can be reproduced? I know we can't hear above 20k, but what is the highest frequency a human can reproduce by moving air pre…

The other day I was rigging a bag for a job and noticed something odd I wanted to share with you. In the bag: 788t, 3x Sennie EK100G2 with DC-2 battery eliminators on a Hawkwoods VLR-SQN4S. The 788t was connected to the VLRs fixed cable. One of the Sennies showed one bar of reception, although all TX were off, and my RF-Explorer one meter away on the table showed an empty spectrum. I took the RF-Explorer in the bag, and the noise foor was around 9db higher, with a slight sawtooth pattern. I plugged the 788t off the Hawkwood power source and the noisefloor went down. I powered the 788t from the last Hirose connector, but the noise went up again. I suspected some correl…

University of North Caroline has demonstrated a stretchable "Self Healing" wire that re-connects itself after 10 minutes at room temperature. How long till we can have mic cables made of this stuff? http://video.techbriefs.com/video/Self-Healing-Stretchable-Wires;Materials

Hey Guys! So I have big project coming up that I will be doing a lot of traveling for. I will be OMBing it. The shooting locations will primarily be high-altitude, cold environments, probably mountainous. I will be using a SD 664 for recording. My other gear includes and ME66, 2x Senn G3s with a B6, and TL40 lavs. I will be renting a Rycote zeppelin system as well. Primary cameras will be DSLRs (5d), and a high speed camera as well. The content will be primarily single subject interviews of athletes documentary style. So the interviews will take place indoors and outdoors in a variety of conditions. There may be action shots also of the athletes …

Tri-Level Sync in a Bi-Level World by Dave Pincek, Vice President of Product Development The advent of HDTV has brought a number of new concepts and technologies with it. One of the concepts put into practice is tri-level sync. Tri-level sync solves some traditional problems found with bi-level sync. Although tri-level sync is preferable with the new television system, we still find ourselves interfacing to systems capable of handling only bi-level sync. Therefore, the need exists to convert from tri-level to bi-level sync on occasion. This Tech Corner will acquaint the reader with the new tri-level sync format and its relationship to bi-level sync. Bi-Level Sync…

Hey all, I need some assistance. My CS3e made a pop-pop-pop sound while out on the field. Situation was. Shot on the beach for a few hours. Then went inside car. We shot some stuff with doors open. Then we closed the doors. Then while we're recording some VO and wild lines, I hear some pop-pop-pop. Fast and intermittent. There were just three I think. I would attach a sample, but I can't find where it is. It was a pretty quiet sound. I'm sure it'd be audible though, once amplified enough. Is it preamp motorboating caused by the shift in humidity? Is it RF? I've often gotten a similar sound with the Schoeps, but I figured it was humidity…

For those who have never seen it, I took some screen shots of timecode. This is 23.976 TC. each bit of timecode is either 14 or 27 samples long at 48k. (there are long bits and short bits.)

Hi Guys, I had a pretty bad sound issue today and as I am still learning the ropes, I wasn't able to figure it out on set. It happened only at one of my two recording sessions today. I could use any input to get to the bottom of this so I don't repeat it ever again. I completed my first field recording session with no problems. Then when helping a couple friends on an unpaid pickup shoot after, all hell broke loose and my audio is largely un-usable. This is what happened: We were recording in a relatively noisy small restaurant. By noisy I mean that there were loud variables we could not turn off (commercial fridges, loud oven going in the nearby kitch…

Dither Dither is not the most important technical detail to learn about, but if you want to get your digital audio done just right, then you should learn about dither. Especially if you want to learn why your digital reverb has been leaching the ambience out of your music, when it's supposed to be adding ambience. Or why your CDs don't sound as spacious as your 24 bit sources and want to avoid that veiled, dry, and lifeless feeling! Follow that Sample Let's start with a little lesson in DSP (Digital Signal Processors). Many workstation and processor manufacturers ignore the critical issue of wordlength. Let's examine what happens to digital audio when you c…

Hi all, this is my first post here. i'm Filippo i'm a location sound mixer from Italy. Today i've done a job in a photographer's studio. It had very high and reverberant ceiling, and same were the sides. But the setting of the story was a fortune teller's tend, the most unecoich room! I've put all the fabric i could all around and than used both boom and radio. But after that i could still hear the reverberation from the radiomic. I was using a sanken cos 11 and an mkh50. Should have been a better solution use a less sensitive capsule? or a more directional mic like a shotgun (phase cancellation??)? And now the most critical point, there are some plugins used in post that…

I have recently been experiencing odd noises coming from my G3 receivers. The noises sound digital in nature, its not static or RF interference. I noticed that the noise is only apparent when the backlight on the screen of the receiver turns off. When you press a button to wake the screen back up again the noise goes away. The noise is also synchronous with the the little LCD display, in other words, when something moves on the display (like the audio level indicator) when the backlight is off, you hear the little digital artifacts. It is very odd, and very annoying. I recorded a sample of the noise. The first part is the noise by itself, with the lav on th…

So you look at the frequency map on lectrosonics and sennheiser... you see there's a TV channel with 15kw tower in your frequency, but it's 60 miles away. Let's say you have a lectro set with one frequency in the middle of that band. Will it be crystal clear or will you only hear that TV station through the receiver? How do you know? Normally I look for channels in a "vacant" block... but what's the cutoff? Is there a hard number here? Can you expect clean audio even if you're in the middle of a weak TV channel? I've worked with 411 many times and rarely had to seek out a new channel for clear audio... Let's say I find a bargain 195d for backup, but the frequenc…

Hi, a technical question (so i hope this was the right place to ask). I have previously only used 'Y' leads to feed line level FROM my mixer but i wondering if i can feed (directly, without a separate powering box) 2 mic inputs (of mixer) from 1 phantom powered mic. If so do i switch phantom (p48) powering 'ON' for both the respective I/Ps or just 1? And even if this is workable are there any issues like S/N ratios? thanks for reading, dan. ps. I would have done the experiment but i don't want to damage my mic or mixer. pps. The elements involved include a Sanken Cub-01, SD302, Tascam DR-680 and a source with potentially a very wide dynamic…

Hello People, I'm looking for suggestions from those familiar with the finer details of Nomad capabilities. I just upgraded to the 12 and believe I have found an unfortunate recording limitation, bummer for me, and you other 12 track users. I am using and 8 channel board in front of the Nomad sending 8 AES channels into Nomad. The way I see it on the input config screen, my only option for 8 channels of AES on the nomad is Input Type 7. With this option selected, it limits my 9-12 card tracks to R1 and R2 only - R3 and R4 are RED (danger danger) because of the input type 7. The option for outputs 1-4 isn't enabled.....yet? Does anyone know of any possible…

What kind of audible artifacts, if any, might appear if I wanted to record three separate ISO tracks on a recorder like Pix 240 using two different AES3 input pairs that share the same sampling depth and approximately same sampling frequency (48Khz/24bit), but are not synced to the same word clock? As a practical example, let's say there was a boom mic connected to input 1 via a MixPre-D and a Sony dual channel DWX series digital wireless microphone receiver connected to input 2. The Sony receiver has a word clock input, but MixPre-D doesn't have one. Let's say there are no word clock sync cables connected between the devices at all. It is difficult for me to un…

Hi, might lend myself a small gig that involves shooting with the Alexa. From what I heard from many, it is a double-system workflow shooting with it. Since the budget does not justify in investing myself with a Nomad, I'm just wondering if the Fostex FR2 with Timecode option will be able to work with Alexa, timecode compatiability wise. Much advise is needed. Thanks a lot!

Hi I have some serious problem i'm working on a doco about air hostess, lots of the filming r inside the airplanes.... we shot for a day last week and i had poor dialogues with very loud backgrounds the jet's engines are very loud and very wide frequency range!!! i tried some lectrosonics with AUTO NR, but no help Gun MICS were not even an option the only solution i might think of is working with dynamics microphones Please help me Thanks

Hi all, i know i should h.a.t. and all first but i thought i could see if you guys have had similar experiences? Outta nowhere i cannot access my settings on one of my ( until now?) trusty lectro smqv transmitter anymore (you know while turning on while holding arrow button)? Did that ever happened to you? Is there a setting i m missing? Is that a simple crap happen moment? Thanks in advance for your help! Dominique

i'm hoping someone will help me out to understand the difference (if there is a difference) when using an older SD mixpre which has outputs that are impedance balanced, vs. an newer mixpre that has active balanced outputs when using it as a front end to feed signal into ch 3/4 of a 744T. i've got a few other questions: are there differences in quality, level, rf/interference rejection or other? is active-balanced and balanced the same thing? when going through an xlr how does impedance balanced avoid interference by having only one voltage line when compared to balanced that has 2 lines? i've read the paper on the differences (http://www.sounddevi…
