Does anyone have a definitive answer for whether or not to connect the cable 'Shield' to the connector 'Case' Standard wiring for 'Balanced' Input/Output 3 Pin XLR is: Pin 1 Shield Pin 2 + Pin 3 - But should you jumper Pin 1 'Shield' to the connector 'Case' It seems that every time I ask someone I get a different answer ranging from "Absolutely yes" to "Definitely not" and even "Yes for location audio but no for studio audio" or "Only at one end" or "No way because that 'Case' lug is for attaching the string in the cable to provide strain relief". Greetings to all I bought mini starq uad cables recently and went ahead soldering some mini stereo jacks to XLR cables. I also wanted to make a couple of Switchcraft Mini XLR cables to XLR M and XLR F but the mini star quad cable's diameter was not permitting the cable to make it through the Mini XLR tight Switchcraft sleeve. I remember the first time I switched from a typical XLR cable ( not anything fancy ) to a Mogami mini star quad, I was amazed by what my ears were listening ! To make sure that it was not a psycho acoustic mind trick, I switched back to the previously used cable and then plugged the Mogami again and there it was once more ! The low end con…

Hope there is someone that might be able to help with this... I'm doing sound on a multicam live event shoot this week. The record and edit frame rate is set to 23.976FPS (NDF) and thus I will be recording at 48kHz. There will be a sequence that will require playback and I am intending to send timecode from my audio system to each camera using wireless link. I will probably also try and get a smart slate on set so that there is at least some visual representation of the timecode. Unfortunately my audio playback system doesn't support 23.976ND fps - the lowest timecode rate it will go to is 24fps. This means I can't generate timecode at the right rate for pl…

Hi everyone, Having some issues that I've never encountered before. Your advice is appreciate! I'm recording onto a Fostex DV824 as primary and 744t as backup. Shooting 35mm. Post wants sound at 24 ND, 48.048 K. The DV824 doesn't record at 48.048, so I have set it to record at 48K, then pulling it up +.1%. Here is the issue: Post is saying the TC displayed on slates and the TC being stamped on metadata are totally off, with no consistency. Not a drift. Sometimes is 30 seconds off, sometimes 90. On set, the slates match my decks all day long. I can guarantee the slates and recorders are sync, but I don't know whats being stamped as metadata on the disc. …

I know that there are at least a couple of you that are running either boom recorder or metacorder in your carts. I have a i5 mounted in a drawer that I put together last winter. It's dead silent. I keep a temp monitor up, and now that It's getting warm Im starting to see my cpu temps rising. I am starting to think a little bit more about ventilation, but so far it hasn't been an issue. My average temp stays somewhere around 60-65c. What are your average temps? Do you monitor them? I think my biggest worry is a runaway process. I was just stress testing my cpu and went from 62-81 in about 3 seconds, hovered at 81 for about 10 minutes, and then dr…

Hi all i still dont know this "block stuff" i do however found out that one sound guy from holland who does a lot off big movie's here in holland sold his audio ltd 2040's since i use those myself i wrote him why? did he not like them anymore? turns out he sold them because they where in the 800 Mhz (our nabour country germany uses the 800 for digital tv)range and he now has the same radio's but in the 600 range. he also told me this 600 mhz range would also improve his distance because of how fysics works anybody feels like explaining why 600 mhz is more range then 800 in noob terms cheers martijn wonder wh…

Hi everyone. I'm on a shoot in India and my fusion is acting up. It won't let me mirror to the mirror card nor is it letting me mount my ext LaCie anymore. It mounted fine the first two days then I switched cards and it stopped mounting. Replace the card with the first card and still nothing. Any ideas or tips? TIA

Does anyone has problems with delay...and I don't mean the FX version. I'm wondering why on the Sound Devices 744T anyone would need to necessarily delay the inputs. Of course there could be the very rare occurrence. But by the time you even notice a delay wreaking havoc on something isn't it too late? I'm assuming delay in the process does occasionally occur...but at what points have you found it to interfere. I can only imagine how long correcting a delay problem onset a run and gun style deal could take..."waiting on sound"

The broken nomad thread made me decide to start a thread about aliasing. I started writing a whole things explaining what aliasing is, how under sampling creates it, and the theory behind it. Then I found this video. Discuss.

Hi all, I just miced up someone today with the above system and very random, without a mic plugged in, I hear a very random popping. Almost like a cable popping but softer and not scratchy. The system work perfect the last time I used it. My experience with troubleshooting wireless is not much. So any help would be great. I swapped batts, antenna and jiggled it violently with no specific result. Very random and not caused by vibration. Thanks for your suggestions. Scott

I am hiring two Lectrosonics SMa transmitters with a SRa (?) Receiver. I tested everything out (good thing because of the first receiver output 2 failed). But now I test it again in a quiet invironment, and one of the two SMa's is giving a lot of noise. Also, everytime a -10 or -20 LED blinks a pop sound is audible. Is this device broken? I tried: Changing level, Frequency, Rolloff, replacing battery, replacing microphone, replacing antenna, switch mixer input, Check compatibility (can only switch between hbr and ifb). Help! Argh! I can't contact the company bacouse it's evening now here (Netherlands).

I have several AKG blue line mic capsules and power modules and I'm running into an issue with my ck93 hypercardioid capsule. It loosened up, and when I screw it back together (see the 3 pieces in the pictures below) the signal becomes either very weak and hissy, or highly distorted noise. Wiring/soldering are not my forte, but I am led to believe that the three pieces are misaligned with one another. Does anyone know if this could be the case, and if so, what is the proper way to align/fix everything? Or could it be something else? I had the same problem with another 93 capsule and I somehow miraculously managed to get it to work again. I'm not having the same luck …

Hey all, I'm curious what mixdown levels most (post-production) sound mixers use with films, particularly short films. I vaguely remember from college that our outputs should be peaking around -10 or -12dBFS at the most. However I think this must vary a lot depending on the application of the film and more confusion is added on what is an acceptable loudness, since peaks do not define loudness. Furthermore I suspect these levels would be inclined differently for web purposes. I've done a few sound mixes in the past that clients were happy with, following the above rule, however recently I've received a request to basically get the mixes peaking as loud as poss…

10 Statements on Condenser Microphones vs. Dynamic Microphones By audio specialist Eddy B. Brixen www.dpamicrophones.com The topic of discussion on the difference between dynamic microphones and condenser microphones is never ending. That’s fine, we don’t want it to end, rather, we want to add to the discussion and further enlighten readers a little…First of all, we must clarify a few things: The difference between dynamic microphones and condenser microphones is all about two different transducer principles. In other words, it has nothing to do with the directional characteristics of the microphones. You cannot ask: ‘What kind of directional characteristic do…

I've checked the usual references, but would love to get some input from people with on-the ground (well, just-above-the-ground) experience. What blocks and/or frequencies in St. Louis, MO have people found to be especially open or especially crowded? Thanks, Jim
