I've been having an interesting time since I changed from an old SQN to a SD552 mixer recently. One thing that I have been baffled by is this.. I do a lot of shoots with the Sony EX3 camera which I have quite liked as initially when using my SQN mixer I felt that the EX3 had good sound and an ok return quality from the headphone mini jack. Recently it had seemed that the headphone out on the ex3's that productions had been hiring was not so good. No bottom end present which made monitoring the return unsatisfactory. Especially outdoors in windy conditions. Also I was getting some strange high pitched whining on the return only when using a radio mic tx fed…

Gotham Sound came up with this amazing tool for archiving frequency spectrum scans. The user base can submit their scans to be added to this repository, helping all sound mixers in the world better prepare for frequency coordination: http://gothamfaxes.com If everyone helps submit scans to this repository, we will forever answer life's greatest question: "what blocks are usable in XXX city?"

Again, mad physicist exploring TC world here. 😁 Is HDMI timecode LTC and is it using Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) pin bus? Or maybe Pin 17? I understand timecode over HDMI is a hack introduced by Atomos almost ten years ago and then adopted by many manufacturers but can't find any technical details about it... any pointer? [EDIT: or is it SONY with the FS100? as discussed here on jwsd] Thanks in advance... Fun fact: looking around I learned Atomos under CEO J. Young was a shitty place to work at. PS: I'm referring to pin 17 as "Utility/HEAC+" signal, defined in HDMI 1.4+ version. This signal moves from pin …

one of my 4.2's was running about 20ips , irrespective of speed switch. no , it was not in f fwd.fault traced to poor gold split connections to the speed control board at rear.. unsrew the 2 screws securing the 2 green plugs and gently, with a jewellers screwdriver, prise each split gold pin , slightly wider, to ensure a better tight fit. this cured the problem.

Tri-Level Sync in a Bi-Level World by Dave Pincek, Vice President of Product Development The advent of HDTV has brought a number of new concepts and technologies with it. One of the concepts put into practice is tri-level sync. Tri-level sync solves some traditional problems found with bi-level sync. Although tri-level sync is preferable with the new television system, we still find ourselves interfacing to systems capable of handling only bi-level sync. Therefore, the need exists to convert from tri-level to bi-level sync on occasion. This Tech Corner will acquaint the reader with the new tri-level sync format and its relationship to bi-level sync. Bi-Level Sync…

Dither Dither is not the most important technical detail to learn about, but if you want to get your digital audio done just right, then you should learn about dither. Especially if you want to learn why your digital reverb has been leaching the ambience out of your music, when it's supposed to be adding ambience. Or why your CDs don't sound as spacious as your 24 bit sources and want to avoid that veiled, dry, and lifeless feeling! Follow that Sample Let's start with a little lesson in DSP (Digital Signal Processors). Many workstation and processor manufacturers ignore the critical issue of wordlength. Let's examine what happens to digital audio when you c…

I'm a recording engineer based in Boston. About a month ago I some tests measuring and comparing the relative sensitivities for various wireless mic heads using a Lectrosonics HHA transmitter, and a variety of compatible capsules(heads). I've attached a write-up of what we learned-some things many of you may be well aware of. It was very interesting to see what capsules were most sensitive. Sensitivity Report.pdf
