I am a recent new user of SM transmitters. I have noticed that the battery indicator is useless and I wonder if Lectro can do an update to replace the alkaline setting with a nimh setting? As well, what is the typical (and safe) cutoff voltage for AA nimh batteries in an SM tx. I try to run mine to about 1.17v but wonder if it would be better for the battery if I don't let them run so far down.

I'm going to be installing some video monitors into a rack mount. I'm thinking of placing a 'patch panel' on the other side of the rack. So, I guess I'll need to make up some smaller patch cables that go between the monitor(s), and the patch panel. What is the ohms on the video cables? 50ohms, 75omhs? Does it make a difference? Have you guys made your own BNC to BNC cables? Has anyone done this? Thanks -Richard

We all have been dealing with Time Code since it was introduced. Why is it still so expensive and hard to make work. Shouldn’t there be a single mass manufactured chip that has all Time Code functions built into it, that can be used in all devices? I had a Zaxcom Fusion that when a IFB 100 transmitter was plugged into the TC on the Fusion, it froze the whole machine. When the Red camera first came along it took several years to get the TC bugs worked out. (There still may be ongoing problems). On the show I’m on now, when the DIT’s Time Code Generator gets hot we loose code. He’s on the latest, greatest Codec system. I know that every one of you ha…

My apologies because this is likely a simple question but I'm very new to this: The following piece of equipment was damaged on set: Micron Transmitter (TX501, 211.0 MHz, 50Mw) The receiver that I have (that is not damaged) is as follows: Micron Receiver MDR 550 (range 198 MHz to 216 MHz) Do I have to replace it with the EXACT frequency of transmitter or can it be one that falls within that frequency range? Thank you so much for any advice/help! It is much appreciated!

Gentle sound folk. Am recording iso tracks on 788T at 25ND/48kHz. I have an ACL203 jammed to the 788T sitting on the side of the RED with Genlock and Timecode connected. ACL203 Settings are HD1080P, 25ND, 48kHz - switch settings 3,2,2 RED is set to jamsynch from the ACL203 and to use external genlock (from the ACL203) Initially, on boot, everything is fine. Chainlink symbol for TC Jam and Padlock symbol for genlock. All Good. Then, without warning, after a few hours of operation, the RED loses Genlock. A reboot of the RED solves this problem, but then it appears again. After a while, rebooting the RED is moot and the genlock simply does not…

Greetings all: I've done way too much work with the Canon DSLRs lately. I'm certainly glad to be busy, but I'm getting a little weary of the endless technical issues. Here's the latest: Every shoot I've done with the cameras since the firmware upgrade last spring have synced just fine. No issues that I've ever been called on. When possible, I send at least one camera a reference audio feed, but I don't go to extreme lengths to do it. Every single shoot I've used 29.97ND or 23.976 TC. Every online reference just says 29.97. A client is experimenting with pulling actual time of day timecode from the cameras files, something to do with the Magic La…

I'm doing an indie short film recording on a 702T this week. Just like to find out what is the acceptable range of levels on the recorder. My range was between -30 to -4dBu but it turn out soft when playback on the MacBook pro speaker.

Greetings to all I bought mini starq uad cables recently and went ahead soldering some mini stereo jacks to XLR cables. I also wanted to make a couple of Switchcraft Mini XLR cables to XLR M and XLR F but the mini star quad cable's diameter was not permitting the cable to make it through the Mini XLR tight Switchcraft sleeve. I remember the first time I switched from a typical XLR cable ( not anything fancy ) to a Mogami mini star quad, I was amazed by what my ears were listening ! To make sure that it was not a psycho acoustic mind trick, I switched back to the previously used cable and then plugged the Mogami again and there it was once more ! The low end con…

I recently corrupted a drive and in the long search for an easy way to play/save the recovered headerless wav files, I found this programme for a mac. http://tmkk.pv.land.to/xld/index_e.html Just import as a raw file, set the destination folder and away you go! Way easier and quicker then other methods I found... Regards, Grant.

Anyone have a current DEVA V manual or know where I can download one? The only one I can find online was revised in 2004. The link on Zaxcom to the latest manual, which they say was revised on 8/17/2007, is a dead link. Thanks!

Hoping someone can help me with this. I'm looking at changing the settings on the limiter out of my Audio Developments Board. The manual mentioned two things about setting the limiter (outside of attack and release times) - "Biasing and Threshold." The term Biasing is not something I understand in this context. The manual reads like this: "Biasing and threshold are adjusted as follows: VR1 biases the limiter circuit to the point of correct operation and VR2 sets the threshold." Is Biasing at all related to "make up gain" that is offered on many compressors? Thanks for any knowledge, -Greg-

I've spoken with a few people and read numerous posts where this distinction is not made. I have a loose understanding of it and would appreciate those more knowledgeable chiming in to clarify. I've tried finding this in the ARRL handbook but am not sure what search words to look for in the index. From my understanding, RF gain attributed to an antenna type such as a helical(+14db) or LPDA(+4-6db) is totally different from gain needed to get back to zero on a receiver from couplers or long cable runs using a low noise amplifier(LNA). The antenna gain is similar to microphone pickup patterns and their "reach". A helical antenna radiates a field that is cone shaped( I th…

I've been having an interesting time since I changed from an old SQN to a SD552 mixer recently. One thing that I have been baffled by is this.. I do a lot of shoots with the Sony EX3 camera which I have quite liked as initially when using my SQN mixer I felt that the EX3 had good sound and an ok return quality from the headphone mini jack. Recently it had seemed that the headphone out on the ex3's that productions had been hiring was not so good. No bottom end present which made monitoring the return unsatisfactory. Especially outdoors in windy conditions. Also I was getting some strange high pitched whining on the return only when using a radio mic tx fed…

Whilst perusing the Phonak web site I tried this simple hearing test There is no real scoring, just advice as to whether you may need to see a loss specialist. I tested with the MacBook Pro open speakers set to a couple of clicks below mid-volume. I believe I heard all the words except one– I was in my kitchen and the refrigerator compressor clicked on precisely when one was spoken. http://www.phonak.com/us/b2c/en/hearing/recognizing_hearingloss/hearingtest.html

My sister was in town and came with me to a rental house. She was looking at the labels and names on some item and commented that if she had just heard some of the names without seeing the items, she would assume she was in a hunting lodge. I thought it would be interesting to compile a list somewhat specific to our industry with how we define them. butt plug - xlr plug on transmitter dead cat/ dead wombat - "hairy" cover for a wind blimp wire - refers to lavalier plus transmitter. as in "wire the talent" shotgun - supercardioid microphone MOS - mixer outside smoking, Mit out sound, minus/missing optical stripe, etc. *edit - I did a search after posting and c…

Hi all i still dont know this "block stuff" i do however found out that one sound guy from holland who does a lot off big movie's here in holland sold his audio ltd 2040's since i use those myself i wrote him why? did he not like them anymore? turns out he sold them because they where in the 800 Mhz (our nabour country germany uses the 800 for digital tv)range and he now has the same radio's but in the 600 range. he also told me this 600 mhz range would also improve his distance because of how fysics works anybody feels like explaining why 600 mhz is more range then 800 in noob terms cheers martijn wonder wh…
