I love to see both these stories in the financial news today. I know the general consensus amongst most people is that market cap and profitability are intrinsically good --- what a company decides to do with their wealth is what is really important. Apple Inc. has become the first U.S. company to close with a market cap of more than $700 billion, nearly doubling the market cap of its closest rival, Exxon Mobil. Apple’s share price closed nearly 2 points up at $122.02 with a market cap of $710.72 billion on the NASDAQ exchange. At more than $700 billion, Apple is twice as valuable as Microsoft ($349.6 billion); Exxon closed with a market cap of $384.32 billion. …

Great story in the current issue of The New York Times on the first iPhone demo from 2007. It turns out that the phone barely worked, a lot of the demo was rigged, and backstage, the Apple engineers were terrified that all or part of the demo would blow up in everybody's faces. Incredibly, the (carefully staged and planned) demo went off perfectly, Steve Jobs was happy, and the iPhone went on to become one of the greatest successes in electronics history. It took 2-1/2 years of R&D and more than $150 million just to create the first prototype, according to the article. Thought you guys would have a suggestion. I play music through the aux channel/headphone out of my iphone. While playing with various car chargers I always get a pretty noise ground loop (not sure what to call when a car is involved). I drive a newer car so don't think it's crappy power. I assume most non audio people don't hear it. Any recommendations?

Anyone tried to go to the movie-slate website lately? Seems to be down. I have the app already and am a happy user but I wanted to read up on the details on it's integration with the Time Code Buddy system. I know they work together but the Time Code Buddy website doesn't go into specific detail. -D

I just watched today's Apple's "mass". Pretty interesting, the new processors are really efficient as expected. And they have even lowered prices a bit. Not surprised, as Intel prices their processors as they want holding a virtual monopoly. Interesting times coming, especially with those so called "neural" units tailored for machine learning calculations.

Hi all, I have been trying to install Wave Agent on my Mac with the following results: This package is incompatible with this version of macOS. Has anyone encountered this, and is there a workaround or a newer version available somewhere? What comes up to install from Sound Devices seems to be dated 2014, which of course is long before the advent of Apple silicon chips. The reason I would like to have Wave agent working is to split poly files into their mono components for simpler uploading. Best regards, Jim Rillie Production Sound Mixer

So iOS 7 rolled out last night, and I made the jump and decided to put it on my iPad 2. The installation process was painful: Apple's servers were so clogged, it took the better part of 90 minutes to get the update, then wait endlessly for the device to reboot. Once I re-entered all the password information, I pulled up the new iTunes and fired up iTunes Radio... and it sounded horrible. Hideous distortion, clipped, compressed, the works, just unlistenable by any mammals on earth. Resisting the desperate urge to panic, I did a quick Google search on "iTunes Radio Distortion," and sure enough, a few hundred other people had the same problem. The solution: reboot yet ag…

Hybrid tech site and store MIC Gadget this week quietly unwrapped an adapter to give iPad and iPad 2 owners much-requested card format support. The CF Card Reader for iPad lets photographers with higher-end DSLRs and some older compact cameras load photos and videos directly to either of iPad. Format support on Apple's tablet is currently the limiting factor and currently excludes RAW photos as well as some video formats, primarily those that exceed Apple's official 720p, 30FPS video limit. The reader does take modern UDMA-capable cards, although it will be capped at the USB 2.0 port's speeds. A regular-sized USB port is built-in and will take any device that uses 20mA…

Well, I finally have an iPad and what Scott and others have been saying for a long time is true --- this site is not compatible with the iPad!! Bummer. When you want to post a message , you can enter text in the topic Subject box but that's it --- no way to get the cursor into the message body and start typing. I tried using the "Next" button on the iPad but that just cycled through the whole text editor etc., and never arrived at body of the message. This is something I really need to look into now that I have an iPad! I will let you know what I find. Note: one of the new sites that I am considering for other purposes, and maybe to replace this site, has its ow…

Trouble Reading On That Tiny IPhone? Apple Experiments With XL Screens For Tablet, Smartphone Apple may be supersizing its iPad and iPhone, exploring a larger variety of screen sizes to diversify the mobile device market. The Cupertino company said its Asian suppliers are testing a 13-inch iPad and smartphones measuring larger than four inches, according to the Wall Street Journal. With the grande iPad, Apple reverses direction from its most recent iPad invention — the 7.9-inch Mini, which was released in November and touted as the first tablet that could fit easily into a pocket or purse. Even before the tablet hit stores, retailers were selling cases, purses …

I just put a USB plug into my soundcart and it can charge most things with a USB connection, except my Iphone. What's different about the Iphone USB connection ? Anyone know if it would be the same with the Iphone 4S ?

-excerpted from Macworld site Remembering eWorld, Apple's forgotten online service Benj Edwards @benjedwards Jun 9, 2014 3:44 AMe-mailprint Just before the Internet’s meteoric rise in the public consciousness, large centralized dial-up services like America Online, Prodigy, and CompuServe dominated the online landscape. In this competitive climate 20 years ago, Apple introduced eWorld, a subscription-based information service available to Mac and Newton users. Despite its closure in 1996, eWorld remains notable for its city-based interface metaphor and as a symbol of Apple’s overreach in the era. Users accessed eWorld through custom client software written by…

I finally broke down and got my iPad2. Yes, I'm enjoying it. I am a big believer in getting a sturdy protective case for items like this. However, I'm curious how other users are carrying their iPads around; aside from a carrying bag. I've heard several horror stories of accidental drops and screen cracking. I know it's cool to carry this rather light unit around 'bare naked'. I buy the Otter Box brand. I have one protecting my HTC Evo 4G, Android phone. I've done the same for my iPad2, getting the "Defender Series" case. The cover also doubles as a support stand. You can buy it direct from Otter Box at their full price of $89.95, (over priced) or be…

After all the complaining about the new connector on the iPhone 5, there have been some significant revelations about this connector. These explanations go far beyond the remarks about how Apple used the new connector just to keep us buying new stuff and how awful it is that Apple has pissed off all the accessory companies. It looks to be a truly "smart" cable with active adaptive components that configure its use. Apple's Lightning Connector Uses Adaptive Technology to Dynamically Assign Pin Functions With Apple's new Lightning connector on the iPhone 5 dropping to just eight contact pins from the 30 pins seen in the original dock connector and gaining t…

The Wall Street Journal reports that Sprint will offer the iPhone 5 when it launches later this year, becoming the third U.S. carrier to offer the iPhone. According to the report, the iPhone 5 will launch simultaneously on Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T in "mid-October". Sprint Nextel Corp. will begin selling the iPhone 5 in mid-October, people familiar with the matter said, closing a huge hole in the No. 3 U.S. carrier's lineup and giving Apple Inc. another channel for selling its popular phone. The timing, however, indicates Apple's new iPhone will hit the market later than expected and too late to contribute to sales in the company's fiscal fourth quarter, w…

Apple has quietly admitted that there might be a problem with the video chips on 'a small percentage' of MacBook Pro models. Just a month too late for me, as mine crapped out during prep for a show and I had to go out and buy another one. Still, at least it looks as though I can get my old one fixed and sell it on. Here's a link that gives some background info: http://preview.tinyurl.com/k5vzbej And here's the official Apple link: http://www.apple.com/uk/support/macbookpro-videoissues/ Regards, John
