Apple is planning to open its first Dutch retail store in Amsterdam, a local website claims. Citing several sources, One More Thing says that Apple has leased the ground floor and mezzanine of the Hirsch Building, found at Leidseplein 29. Beautiful building. Read more

I love to see both these stories in the financial news today. I know the general consensus amongst most people is that market cap and profitability are intrinsically good --- what a company decides to do with their wealth is what is really important. Apple Inc. has become the first U.S. company to close with a market cap of more than $700 billion, nearly doubling the market cap of its closest rival, Exxon Mobil. Apple’s share price closed nearly 2 points up at $122.02 with a market cap of $710.72 billion on the NASDAQ exchange. At more than $700 billion, Apple is twice as valuable as Microsoft ($349.6 billion); Exxon closed with a market cap of $384.32 billion. …

http://www.appleinsi...st_savings.html "According to the report, Apple holds a "central conviction" that overseas production facilities offer scale, flexibility, diligence and skilled workers that U.S. factories are no longer able to match." What a bunch of crap!!!!!!!!!!!

These are strange times. Bloomberg just reported that Apple is now slightly more valuable (at least for its market cap) than Exxon/Mobil, making it -- technically -- the most valuable corporation in the world. Their stock is also at an all-time high, closing in on $400 a share. It wasn't that long ago that they were struggling at 1/10th that, not many years ago. I know pundits could argue, "and if Apple just cut their prices about 15-20%, they'd sell more stuff, have more modest profits, and still be the #2 biggest company in the world." I see good and bad with this, but I'm glad to see somebody's making money in this economy. Full story at this link: …

After an outcry from iPhone users that Apple is slowing down older iPhones to prolong battery life, the Verge is reporting: Apple says that batteries are “consumable components,” and is offering anyone with an iPhone 6 or later a battery replacement for $29 starting in late January through December 2018 — a discount of $50 from the usual replacement cost. Apple’s also promising to add features to iOS that provide more information about the battery health in early 2018, so that users are aware of when their batteries are no longer capable of supporting maximum phone performance. "A pair of former Apple Retail employees have filed a class action lawsuit against Apple for lost wages. The lawsuit stems from an Apple retail policy that requires employees have their personal bags and purses inspected by managers before leaving the store for breaks, lunches and at the end of a shift. The lawsuit alleges that employees are made to wait -- off the clock -- for as long as 5 to 15 minutes per shift while waiting for a manager to inspect their belongings for stolen property. The policy is in effect at all Apple Retail stores and could potentially affect thousands of employees going back more than 10 years." Rest of the story along with a copy of the c…

Amazing end to a complex, lengthy trial: a jury has ruled that Samsung will have to pay Apple over a billion dollars for stealing product ideas and patents for the iPhone. To me, the evidence that surfaced, showing a lot of Samsung's internal memos where they had meetings specifically talking about how to make their icons more rounded and shaded like Apple's, clearly tell me that they stole from Apple's products. Take a look: Apple's stock just hit $675 today (8/24), so apparently the financiers agree with the decision. I hope Apple kicks them to the curb. I really detest it when people steal unique, creative ideas like this and think they can get awa…

More on potential television product from Apple: Rumor: Apple television expected in mid-2012, initial production slated for February Posted by: Chris Barylick Date: Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011, 13:00 Category: Rumor Apple didn’t do the “Inc.” and “lifestyle company” change for nothing. Per AppleInsider, commercial production of Apple’s anticipated television set is expected to begin in February at a Sharp plant in Japan, while competing HDTV makers are reportedly desperate to find out just what Apple plans to sell. Jefferies analyst Peter Misek said in a note to investors this week that Apple is expected to partner with Sharp for …

Apple's Maiden, NC datacenter solar plant nears completion Aerial photos of Apple's enormous solar array adjacent to its data center in Maiden, NC have surfaced. The field, nearly complete less than three months since groundbreaking, covers 100 acres and generates 20 megawatts of power, with California's Sun Power sun-tracking panels. Apple's construction of the farm in North Carolina may soothe Greenpeace's complaints of Apple's use of a primarily coal-and -nuclear powered electric grid provided by Duke Energy. Supplementing the solar array is a 4.8 megawatt peak Bloom Energy fuel cell plant, which converts biogas into electricity. The fuel cell build is the la…

Mary Gruszka / 12.21.2011 12:00AM Audio Measurement Apps—Things to Be Aware Of With the growing number of audio measurement apps for smart devices becoming available, and for fairly reasonable prices, why should you keep your "old" test gear or consider buying new? Even though apps offer amazing capabilities already, and are getting better with regular updates and improvements, it's still early days yet for apps to replace other test gear. TESTING THE TEST GEAR With any test device, it's important to test the test equipment. Compare measurements obtained with apps with those tak…

The Land Before Macs: A field guide Benj Edwards - author for MacWorld Since we live in the era of the Mac and the iPhone, we tend to overlook the earliest, non-Mac era of Apple history—a time when lumbering digital beasts roamed the earth. As a result, many misconceptions about Apple's earliest products continue to spread throughout the Internet unchecked. It's time to rectify that with an authoritative field guide to these early creatures. At the height of Apple Computer’s classical age, these binary dinosaurs came with names like Apple I, II, and III—Roman-numeraled computer systems with lineages almost as ancient as the numerals themselves. Thanks to r…

Check out this astounding summary of a guy's small-claims court case against Apple for failures in his MacBook Pro and Apple's response to his problem. "Rex earlier this week published a lengthy blog post outlining his experience facing off against two Apple lawyers last week and winning an unspecified sum sufficient to purchase a new computer." Hybrid tech site and store MIC Gadget this week quietly unwrapped an adapter to give iPad and iPad 2 owners much-requested card format support. The CF Card Reader for iPad lets photographers with higher-end DSLRs and some older compact cameras load photos and videos directly to either of iPad. Format support on Apple's tablet is currently the limiting factor and currently excludes RAW photos as well as some video formats, primarily those that exceed Apple's official 720p, 30FPS video limit. The reader does take modern UDMA-capable cards, although it will be capped at the USB 2.0 port's speeds. A regular-sized USB port is built-in and will take any device that uses 20mA…

Solar Charger For iPhone Swiftly Sucks Up The SunThe very concept of keeping an iPhone fully charged? Laughable. But using the sun as a power source? That's positively preposterous. Apparently crazy is on the menu over at Dexim HQ. Their new solar-powered P-Flip promises to juice an iPhone's talk time up to eight hours. The rigging basically looks like a bulky black and camouflage case. You slide the iPhone in (there's a version for BlackBerry schlepers too) and the panels soak up sunlight and transfer it over to the phone's power-hungry battery. While the P-Flip manual claims a full solar charge takes 10-12 hours, Dexim's website says 15 hours. Whatevah! In our testin…
