I have a VDB that I bought in the mid 90's and both of the larger sections have always been stiff. Does anyone know how to take one of these apart? I want to see what is binding.

I tried a few searches on the forum and elsewhere but got nothing which I was surprised about as I think Sound Devices used these damn plugs all over the place. The connectors are 0.4mm and I need to find some cable with thin enough wires inside to make a DC power cable. The only thing I found was a chap on you tube in America using a type of microphone cable but it’s not available over here in the UK. Has anyone over here run into this problem and know of where to get some suitable cable for this purpose?

Hello dear sound Colleagues, I am a longtime happy user of Sennheiser MKH30/40 or 50 Stereo MS rig. Coupled with a Modified Cinela Zephyx it is very efficient regarding handling noise and wind protection. I am looking for a solution to use it indoor without the cage (like the Schoeps WMS) but to no avail. Do someone have found an interresting solution of custom made foam which can protect both microphones? I was thinking to do some tests, first with some foam models of different thickness and various glue types but before doing so i turned myself toward the Mecca of sound knowledge database! Thank you very much for sharing your experiences! B…

Not that this would necessarily be a DIY, but has anyone heard of modding an x5 to have direct outs? I'm building a new bag and keeping an x5/fr-2 bag for back-up/"b" kit, but I'd get more mileage out of it if it had the direct outs.

I just finished my DYI slate handle for my Denecke slate. We have had a lot of rain in California so I finally completed the project. I had more time than money! There are additional posts on the topic in Manufactures & Dealers, but I my case this is a DYI project. Tools used: Drill Press, Drills, Counter Sink Bit, Hacksaw, Files, Tap and Die and a Belt Sander. Materials used: Scrap Aluminum, 2- Flathead Screws, 2- Roundhead Screws, Sandpaper and Lay-out Fluid. Note: I did bore 2 small holes to mount the handle to the slate, using the original Denecke hole spacing (not seen in photos). You can see the layout lines and hole spacing/placement in the bottom…

I'm planning my first cart build, and was looking at the Gallery of Sound Carts to get some inspiration. Now - I am wondering what those rails are that most of you are using to build your custom carts? Can't seem to find anything on the internet or in the shops... I mean the rails that you can see on those carts: http://jwsound.smugmug.com/Gallerysoundcarts/i-bxhngc4 http://jwsound.smugmug.com/Gallerysoundcarts/i-6mLgLJV Any hints? Or any suggestions for similarly useful rails systems?

I posted this on the FB page, but wanted to share here with more photos. It dawned on me the other day that a cup holder is designed to work with...cups, or rather travel mugs with lids! I removed the lid from my favorite mug—Oxo metal one—and found that a K&M table stand, minus rubber feet, fits snugly inside. Tada! Add an ankle wrap or similar to tuck the rig into the cup holder and you now can attach a shock mount or dual mic bar and hypercardiods in a variety of ways. The tabletop stand extends nicely so that you can sneak the mic as high as you like and still be out of frame on a back seat shot angled at one front seat. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I’m trying to put together a power supply for my little sound bag. I have a Mix Pre and a Marantz and mostly have a MKH 416P 48 running out of it. Electricity is not my strong suite but this is what I’ve got so far. The Marantz is 5V at 1.4A so 7W but the Mix Pre I can find nothing on except that the DC is 5-18V. Someone on the Handyman forum calculated that it was about 3.75W from the batteries making a total of about 10W required. So for the whole day I need 90-100Wh battery. But there is the phantom power, dose this change the picture a lot? I presumed it was such a small amount it was negligible but I really don’t know. And though SoundDevices states 5-18V I…

So after a lot of research, measuring, thinking and re thinking, asking advice, changing my mind, and designing a 3D model in sketch up. I enlisting the skills of top notch Atlanta metal machinist and welder Jason Dozer to bring it to fruition. Special thanks to mixers Michael Clark for letting me borrow some ideas from his build to implement into mine, Todd Weaver for making me aware of Dozer's cart building skills by sharing his design with all of us, Whit Norris for listening to me talk about it every waking minute during the build, and Jake Slaney for helping me pick it up today. I still have some final details to ad for cable management and power but I thought it …

I would love to have a multicable with one USB connection and 2 or 3 audio channels. What kind of cable can I use? Would a (individually) shielded multicore/multipair fit my needs?

I've built a new mini cart for omb / eng jobs when working out of a bag. So far only the frame is complete, I'm still waiting on some parts, accessories, etc, but it made it's debut on set today for a Comcast commercial, and it was the perfect combination of workability, size, and mobility. I will have to redo the handles, they aren't quite tall enough so I kick the wheels at times, and the boom holders, antennas, working shelf, as well as foam cutout drawers for inside the pelican, are all in the works, but are not ready / have not arrived yet. I'll post more photos next week when the next shipment arrives.

I've been soldering my own cables for a long time so I'm not new to the work. In the past couple of years I'm having more trouble with the solder itself. It wants to just glob up and not flow as easily into the wire. Tinning wires has turned into a exercise in patience. I have a decent soldering station, I use tinner/cleaner on the tip before I solder and I've tried different temperatures. Has the formulation for electronic solder changed? I used to enjoy soldering but its really annoying now. Any ideas what I should be using to make it easier/better?

Hey guys and gals, Bit of a noob question, but I'm having some trouble figuring out how to wire my cable. I want to run a Lectro R1a as a wireless reference track to camera(Arri Amira) I need to wire a 3.5mm trs to XLR. I'm concerned that the R1a will output a dual mono signal because it thinks stereo headphones are plugged in. I just want a balanced mono signal from R1a to single XLR input on camera. Is this possible? Thanks for your input and or output

Hi what kind of cables would you recommend for making 4pin XLR to lectro or hirose? Remote audio uses 14awg and 16 awg I think. Do you have a link or website to recommend? Thanks

So I noticed that the Rodelink wireless system has an option to power the unit through a micro usb cable instead of batteries. I've got a BDS system but unfortunately no one (including Rode) sells a micro usb to barrel DC cable. Anyone have any success making one? I tried but can't seem to get a working one.

Hello, i would like to know if someone has modified a Comtek M72 microphone tx, to fit a BNC antenna connector as the M72 option 7. What cables are the antenna ones? Any ideas? Here's some pics of a recently bought M72 (with a clean XLR input connector modification). Thanks for your opinions, and ideas. fabian

The xlr jack on my sennheiser 416 is looser than I would like.. I think in conjunction with female xlr jack on my boom pole, they are creating some noise I would like to eliminate. I am planning on opening the mic up to work on it, but not sure on how to tighten or shim the connector once the mic is open. Does anyone have experience with this? My schoeps MK41 is not as bad but could probably use help eventually if all goes well. I've done searched the forum for this topic, but have not found any info.. Thanks..

I need to make up cables for some Audix M1250B mics - what cable is best for this? I've got some Ream RT3FC-B ends, and i'm looking at Canare L-2T2S, L-2E5, or L-2E5AT. I've got a roll of L-4E6S, but they need something smaller. I'm leaning towards the L-2E5AT as its $183/roll - looks like that's for permanent install rack wiring though.

First of all I'd like to say HI! to all of you:) I'd like to share my kind-of-DIY. Lately the internal mics of my D50 broke (Sony says there are no parts left and only solution is to buy a D100...), so I had to come up with something... The parts: D50 - SD302 - LineAudio CM3 Enjoy!
