From Radio World: Curt’s Gyraf Audio G7 Tube Mic Project by Curt Yengst on 10.15.2013 Audio engineers the world over appreciate the sound of vintage tube microphones like the Neumann U 47 or the AKG C12, but the cost can easily run to several thousand dollars, leaving them beyond the reach of all but the biggest studios (or well-heeled dilettantes). What if I were to tell you that, for under $600 — and with a bit of labor — you could enjoy a taste of that vintage sound? Aarhus, Denmark, is home to Gyraf Audio, a small boutique audio manufacturer specializing in tube preamps and other processors. Their website,www.gyraf.dk, features a DIY section showcasing sev…

I needed a new antenna mast for my cart and bought a Manfrotto light stand. Using just the top 3 segments there was left the base. Then I found an old part of a former SKB shelf. Here is my tripod-cart for resting my bag on it. A poor man´s version of Ed Tise´s cart. Will see how it works when in real use. But it was fun to build it just from some leftovers anyway. Matthias

I just saw a plexiglass screen protector for 664 on the SD facebook page. It just occurred to me that it might be economically feasible to have a small batch of custom screen protectors made of sapphire glass. Perhaps, if it is exactly the right size, it would stay on without any adhesive. Sapphire glass is the kind of glass they use on watches and it's super hard.. very difficult to scratch and optically superior. http://www.rayotek.com/sapphire_windows.htm I'd buy one or two in a group buy for sure.. especially if the price is right. What do you think?

A couple of quick shots of a Double M/S that I'm playing around with while I have a bit of down-time. Due to the tiny size of the MKH8000 series (and the fact that Sennheiser hasn't yet made a figure-8 model in the line ) I'm using the MKH 30. Seeing as it's the biggest mic, it also serves as the mounting for the other mics. Everything fits inside a Rode Blimp (that I don't really use anymore - i bought a new Rycote for my main boom mic) and the back-to back clips are the ones Rode provide with the Blimp - I've got the standard clip back to back with a MKH clip for the front mic (MKH 8050), and a 30mm clip (shimmed with a layer of tape) to go just on the front of th…

This bag cart was given to me by Sid Williams, another local mixer. He hadn't used it in years. It had a bigger top on it. I removed that, and added a couple of hooks for headphones and cables. I also rigged up a boom holder using one of those boom cups that come with some Petrol bags I had lying around, and a large bongo tie elastic. I plan on adding a quick fist type holder soon. I'd also like to remove the bottom shelf and replace it with some kind of drawers that I could line with pick and pluck foam. I would be using the drawers to hold Comteks, a few other mics, cables, adapters and such. Does anyone have any thoughts on something ready made that could be bol…

Until all time code devices have the same connectivity, we must continuously re-patch cables if we're jamming a variety of boxes on the same shoot. I decided to build this fan out cable to jam the obvious 1/4" and 5 pin lemo. Thought it wouldn't hurt to include BNC. My hesitation was with the mini... I'm hoping to jam Zaxcom TXs but I heard that some TXs may be wired with the hot on the sleeve, but this is not confirmed. I built it with hot on the tip and i'll try it out. I suppose zax net would solve this but until then... Note: this cable is for jamming one device at a time. -Devendra Cleary

Anyone had any luck fixing these? I found the point where the cable goes into the wallwart crushed over, wires exposed and unfortunately had already plugged it in and turned on - I've repaired the wires but it's still dead so I'm assuming I've cooked something in the charger part - had a look but can't tell. I've got a replacement turning up tomorrow but a second would be nice, any ideas or is it off to the bin?

I'm about to make a battery charging station out of a Pelican or HPRC case. The purpose is for the case to hold AA/AAA chargers, 9V chargers and NP-1 chargers plus their corresponding power plugs and a power strip in the same case so all I have to do is open the case, plug the power strip into an extension cord or wall socket and I'm ready to charge anywhere. I know many of you have already done this, but I can't seem to find the posts. I tried searching all of the regularly suggested ways but to no avail. That said, I would love to consolidate information about this sort of thing into this thread if possible and see photos of what you guys and gals are using for …

Edit: Thanks to all who donated to the site for parts... I will absolutely do this again in the future if I luck into a pile of parts that help the community Hey all I'm building a DIY Battery Distro and just got a great deal on a bunch of Switchcraft DC jacks Specifically, L712A DC Power Jack, 0.100" (2.5mm) pin, solder lugs termination, long threaded bushings to allow use of both standard and locking power plugs. They mate with the Switchcraft 761K, the same as the Remote Audio BDS, so all those accessories will work I have way more than I need, so I want to pass the savings on to you! Mouser has these listed for $4.50, I just want $1 each. …

Flat back removed np1 compartment I like this setup better then before. Used the 2 existing zippers and just put Velcro on the back part Easy access. "still need to trim the leftover fabric" Removed the np1 compartment in the back and made it flat. The bag is a lot more comfortable on my belly and when it lays on the cart is very straight. Sew the 2 velcros together. Fit the nomad ears perfectly . Side is solid and moved the harness ear a little to the back Zaxnet antenna opening

I use my TRX742 right on top of the pole. The connection between just the TRX´s female XLR and the counterpart on my various mic mounts doesn´t feel very secure. There is just too much play. It even makes noise. With my Panamic pole I use some velcro on both sides. I was wondering if anyone found a clever solution to get a better grip? Sennheiser´s SKP got that very nice secure ring. Neutrik even offers that as a standalone connector - unfortunately female only. I would need a male version as I don´t want to DIY my TRX ...

Hello everyone. I've been working on a reality show on a construction site last summer as well as this one, and wanted to demonstrate how I've solved fast-mic'ing folks and getting a mic on people wearing crazy amounts of safety gear and entering locations inaccessible to our crew. Simply put, it's a hard hat mount. I'm sure many of you have used this type of mount throughout your careers, but for those who haven't here is a very easy way of doing it (photos below). There are a couple of things I like about the mount, but in particular it does three very excellent things: It allows me to mic people almost instantly. Once the Tx is turned on I just hand the subject t…

This is a PSC CartPower unit - bought in 2007, running strong but discontinued by PSC a couple of years ago. It has six outputs, but nowadays i need more. Hence the mod - I added 4 more outputs using Switchcraft locking DC jacks each isolated, filtered and poly-fused as the original outputs. This will ensure i have enough outputs to power the new units on my cart - A MixPreD, Schoeps MiniDA-42 power supply for the SuperCMIT, iPhone charger, and one extra standby output. I used heavy gauge 14 AWG wire, and some heavy soldering to take care of at least 5 Amps of current. I took out the SMPS since i never use AC to power anything, so it was redundant inside the Cart…

Ok so I replaced the end off of a friends lectro wired tram mic recently and was not able to test it on site. He tells me that it is not working and I am trying to trouble shoot this remotely. The thing is All I did was desolder the end shorten the cable past the bad point, than re shrink tube and close it up. There should be no problem. If I recall correctly the wiring was black and shield to pin 2 and red to pin 3. With a jumper from 1 to 4. He tells me that it is not working which leaves me with either having done a bone headed thing and reversing pins 2 and 3 (it was the end of a long day) Or that there is a difference in pin requirements for old and …

Referenced in another thread in the Camera section, I am posting a pic of a DIY cable for the Arri Alexa. This is an inexpensive solution to buying a factory cable to add a wireless scratch track audio signal. You will need a 5 pin male straight connector, a 3.5mm male connector with cable, epoxy, soldering tools, a cutoff tool (Dremel, or hacksaw), and a few minutes time. I had helped make a set of these on another feature with Bud Raymond and on this particular movie, my bad-ass sound mixer, Todd Weaver and I whipped these up in record time on set one day when it was discovered that the camera rental company had failed to include them as a part of the agreed…

I am looking to make some BNC to LEMO and ERX1TCD to LEMO time code cables for RED shoots. I find it very hard to justify the high cost of the pre-made cables but the LEMO connectors themselves are also not cheap. In my research, I came across this site: http://www.econnek.com/ which has replacement LEMO connectors for a fraction of the price. I found one that is compatible with LEMO 4 pin but can't find a LEMO 5 pin on their site. The 4 pin is only $6.50 USD (even though it currently says 0 are available for shipping.... ) Does anyone have any experience with these connectors? Reliability, build quality, true compatibility with RED?

As I do 99.9% of my work with the mixer never leaving the bag, and run all but one of my inputs line level from 411A or SRb, I have very successfully used RG-174 coax for audio cables. Very thin, light, flexible and shielded nicely. Building DIY right angles this weekend and just wondering if anyone a bit more technical has a good reason this is not a good thing. gracias....cleve I might add, of course for not long runs, but the 6-8 inch jumpers needed from receiver to mixer input!

Just wondering if anyone's got a copy of the Mackie onyx 1220 service manual (or any of the onyx series)? I've just picked up a slightly faulty one for cheap and I'm looking into doing a DC mod for it
