If the diagram attached is clear I'm trying to make a custom coiled/bungee cable with three RG58 BNCs and a 4 pin XLR F to XLR F. Trew audio says they cannot make this cable which means I definitely need to find a way to make it now.

This is my new attempt to kill two birds with one stone: add a voltmeter and 5v USB output to my bag. Problem #1. I use a Hawkwoods DV-SQN4S battery distro in my bag. I power my gear (Maxx, 2x411a) from the switchable, regulated 12v outputs. For my meager power needs, I can usually get through a day with a single set of batteries. HOWEVER it would be reassuring to have some insight into remaining battery life. Problem #2. The most frequent power issue I run into is.... my iPhone. Rarely makes it through the day if I've used it for navigation to get to the shoot and if I'm using MovieSlate for sound reports. There are some nice looking hirose-to-usb options out the…

So today I had a shoot with 3 Red Epics and I took my lemo 5 TC cable and BNC-lemo 5. But then there was the horror: TC on the Epic body without breakout, seems to be lemo 4 . Aside from Red pissing me off all day, I don't want this to happen again. So I'm trying to find out to make a cable like Devendra did in this thread: But I can't seem to find the schematics for some connectors. I found this: http://www.sounddevices.com/notes/recorders/xl-lb2-wiring/ and http://www.sounddevices.com/notes/recorders/time-code/xl-lx-wiring/ but I can't seem to find the schematics for lemo 4, XLR and different jack-connectors. Any ideas? Did I forgot a common connector?

Recently a piece of gear in my bag started smoking and stopped working so it was sent back to my dealer for a post mortem. Have just heard back from manufacturer and they said it was either a polarity issue or a power surge, I have checked the cable and it seems to be wired correctly, ie centre to centre outer to outer, so that leaves me thinking it was a power surge. I use a NP-1 to Remote audio BDS and am looking for advice on a 12V DC regulator to put between the BDS and the piece of gear that was affected. Looking for lightweight, low RF noise output. Thanks!

I'm getting ready to redo my bag rig and had a question about what antenna cable I can use. I'm gonna build some 12" cables and want to go as small and flexible as possible. Again, just for the 12" jumpers between receiver and splitter, not for the longer antenna run. Thanks Larry for the how to here - Please and Thank You,

Hi everyone, I am looking for a cheap/diy solution to power 2 neumann KM184 out of 9v batteries. The goal is to ste up a wireless ORTF couple. The couple is going to remain on stand, so I don't need a compact/superclean box, but I need a sound quality comparable to this : http://www.areitec.fr/areitec-pico48-phantom-power-adaptor-zaxcom-wireless-produit-395.html even though I can't afford an audio transformer. I have 2 lectrosonics Smqv transmitters to feed but according to Lectrosonics datas I can't draw sufficient current from it. I recently used one of those gadgets http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/840641-REG/IK_Multimedia_IP_IRIG_PRE_IN_iRig_Pre_Microphone_I…

Hello NYC PSC Cart Owners ! Ok, well perhaps a "Powder Coating Party" is stretching things a bit, but, if we get enough people I'll pitch in for a case of Schlitz. Two things are happening here: 1) I'm rebuilding my PSC cart, and looking for any other NYC cart nerds who might be looking to re-paint their carts with a nice new powder coating to help bring the price down for all of us. 2) All my shelves are bent to hell, and I'm looking to replace them. I found a guy in Brooklyn, who can fabricate them. (OK, I know that part sounds a little sketchy, but stay with me here . . . .) If we have enough people who need shelves, we can bring the price down on t…

Made a down and dirty strain relief for my Nomad's SMA right angle antenna. Cheap and easy for those of you who might like to protect your antenna from stress in the bag. Went searching the shop for something to make a relief out of and found this. I needed something that I could fasten to the Nomad without drilling holes in the body or permanently altering the machine, and this fit the bill when I saw it. Dremmel tooled the locking bolt shorter and came up with this first iteration. Tested it, but the bolt on the right slipped through the hole, so I re-trimmed another bolt and this time added a washer where the arrow points to prevent it from slipping through. …

Hi all respective mixers and JWSound members that might be reading. I have a Zaxcom stereo wireless receiver I am thinking of making an external battery pack for it. The maximum voltage input for it is rated at 15V. If I were to get a 10AA battery holder (15V out) to power the receiver as external power and knowing rechargeable battery circuitry - will there be a risk of overloading? I am asking because I have blown a Surefire flashlight bulb before using rechargeable battery (perhaps it was overcharged? It was a CR123A rechargeable system). Would I be better off with a 8AA battery holder? So even if it is overcharged when fresh coming out of the charge…

Hi guys, I want to wire two very short TA3F > TA3F cables to go from the direct outs of my 422 to my 744T. The necessary length is like less than eight inches. It's because the Remote Audio cable I currently use is annoyingly long: perhaps two feet. So my question is what's the best cable stock to use? I don't feel like trashing the Remote Audio cable for this. Rachel

i had a m10 and some old dpa4060 lying around and put together a small rig that i can take with me on travels. really surprised how nice that sounds. the m10 delivers about 3volts, enough to power the dpa´s. the preamps sound more than ok for such a little box. and it runs half a day on 2 AA´s. the mics are mounted on a hd25. i replaced the 3.5mm jack mic input on the recorder with a less fragile connector . if you rip out the internal mics, there is enough space to put in small connector ( hirose in this case ). you will need something with 4 pins, as the original input is activated by shorting 2 contacts by the sleeve of the jack. and two short sound s…

We've clearly been overthinking this. We just need a bird feeder, a sink strainer, a paint roller, and a few other things. Some clever ideas in here, but uh... Under 5 minutes. If the audio at the head drives you nuts, jump to 1:45 for the step-by-step instructions.

Hello fellow DIYers! I've recently been working a lot with a very thin and flexible shielded 2 core cable. As with many cables of this diameter the flexibility is achieved/aided with strands of nylon(? seeking correction on this). I'm looking to share info regarding how best to work with this type of cable stock. Methods of mine have included: - separating the copper and nylon (tedious & frustrating!), twisting the copper and then melting the nylon strands quickly with a lighter or cut with a sharp pair of pliers. The twisted copper is then filed lightly if needed to remove any black marks and then cleaned with solvent. The copper is then tinned. - if the …

Doing a field repair. Clock it slate with the battery connector plate and a bad solider joint on the lead soldered to it . Almost impossible to solder.. I love these slates but this has to be their weakest point. Anybody here have any tips on this specific repair? I know my description is not detailed but if you own clockit slate you will understand what I am trying to accomplish.

I've been working on my old Audio Developments 062 mixer that has had active balanced direct outputs added at some point. The direct outs are out of phase with the mix outs. I was going to reverse pins 2 and 3 at the dir outs, but I was wondering if that was by design. Is there a reason you would want to have your dir outs and mix outs out of phase with eachother? A seperate but related question: unbalancing balanced outputs. transformer balanced outputs you can unbalance by shorting pins 1 and 3, and for imepdance and active balanced, you should float pin 3. What if your pin 2 and 3 are reversed (had a panasonic mixer that had pin 3+ and 2- on the outputs…

Hi all, I posted a link to a product called Sugru over at the Freelance Sound Mixers group on Facebook. It went down quite well so thought some of you guys might find it useful. It's a mouldable silicone solution that comes in little packs. Dries solid with a little bit of flexibility to it. It's very useful for fixing / fabricating cables and generally fixing stuff. Their website is http://sugru.com/ Sounds like I work for them doesn't it? I don't, just thought it might help someone out.

Hi All, I need get a custom cable made to adapt the TA5f return plug of my Nomad umbilical to the unbalanced 3.5mm return input of other mixers such as 552 etc. The Nomad return input pin out is as follows. Pin 1 - Ground Pin 2 - Channel A (Left) ( + ) Pin 3 - Channel A (Left) ( - ) Pin 4 - Channel B (Right) ( + ) Pin 5 - Channel B (Right) ( - ) Is it fine for me to leave 2 of the pins on the adapter cable's TA5 male not connected? Like this: TA5m Pin1 _ Gnd _ Sleeve TA5m Pin2 _ A(+) _ Tip TA5m Pin3 _ nc TA5m Pin4 _ B(+) _ Ring TA5m Pin5 _ nc

My M216 lives in my bag 100% of the time and I'd like to power it with the BDS. Comtek tech support basically came up with the same idea as me: Fashion a wood block to 9v battery dimensions, mount the appropriate terminals/wire and power it with a regulated 9v feed from the BDS. I've looked at the ISO9VOLT but the connector is in the wrong place. Before I put this together has anyone come up with another solution? -Thanks

I have an old FR2 that was giving me problems going into record the last time I used it. 5 or 6 years ago I was using a friends FR-2 and the record switch broke while in my possession, I remember taking it to Coffey Sound and the repair being $300-something. I have the next few days off, so I was thinking of taking it apart and having a look. Anyone been there/done that? Any gotchas to pay attention to?

Back in the days I was not happy that I had to carry a mixer and a recorder. The extra weight, space and power did not make sense to me. I was talking about the idea to have a 552 like devices with integrated 5 ISO recording and a time code generator. One mixer/recorder unit. So when the nomad was released first I jumped in right away. I continued trying to achieve the lightest, smallest and simplistic sound package. I found many other things bothering me. Cable management. The way the wireless receivers seam to never fit nice and stable in a bag and the fact that past few years I find my self using the same configuration 90% of the time, led me to the idea of all in on…
